ABUJA, March 30 (MENA) - A 40-year-old Nigerian boxer, Segun 'Success' Olanrewaju, has died after collapsing during a boxing match in Ghana.
The former National and West African light-heavyweight champion, was facing Accra-born John Mbanugu, nicknamed 'Power' in an undercard bout of Ghana's Professional Boxing League, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported on Sunday.
The incident occurred at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Saturday.
Olanrewaju suddenly fell to the canvas mid-fight, prompting the referee to immediately call for medical assistance.
Medical professionals rushed to the scene but in spite of the attempts to revive him, the boxer was pronounced dead, with reports suggesting he may have suffered cardiac arrest.
A video of the fight shared on social media showed both boxers fiercely trading punches before Olanrewaju stumbled and collapsed.
This occurred with only 15 seconds left in the third round of their scheduled eight-round bout. (MENA)

Pyramids FC's Nigerian winger Sodiq Awujoola was excluded from the squad that will travel to South Africa on Wednesday ahead of the anticipated game against Mamelodi Sundowns due to injury. The Egyptian club will be hosted by their South African counterparts in the first leg of the CAF Champions League final on Saturday. The return match will be played in Cairo on 1 June. Pyramids' Croatian coach Krunoslav Jurcic chose a 25-man squad for the trip to South African; excluding Awujoola due to a knee injury. 'Awujoola underwent a scan after feeling some pains in his knee during Tuesday's training session. He will remain in Cairo to undergo a rehabilitation program to be ready for the return match,' Pyramids FC doctor was quoted as saying by the Club's official website. The rising Egyptian powerhouse, Pyramids FC, reached the final for the first time in their history after a 3-2 on aggregate victory over South Africa's Orlando Pirates in the semi-final.
