Egypt suffer heavy 4-1 defeat to Sierra Leone in U-20 AFCON - National Teams

Al-Ahram Weekly30-04-2025

Hosts Egypt suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Sierra Leone in their Group A second-round clash at the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday.
Ahmed Khaled opened the scoring for the young Pharaohs in first-half stoppage time, but midfielder Momoh Kamara netted a hat-trick and Sallieu Bah added a penalty to seal a memorable comeback for Sierra Leone.
Egypt U-20 team entered the game on the back of a slim 1-0 win over South Africa on Sunday, while Sierra Leone were held to a goalless draw against Zambia.
Egypt started brightly, applying early pressure, but struggled to carve out clear chances. However, Sierra Leone grew into the game, launching dangerous counterattacks against the hosts.
Sierra Leone thought they had taken the lead in the 24th minute through Sulaiman Kargbo, but the goal was disallowed for offside following a VAR review.
Both sides traded half-chances until Khaled, nicknamed 'Kabaka', latched onto Mohamed El-Sayed's through ball to tap home from close range in stoppage time, sending Egypt into the break with a 1-0 advantage.
Seven minutes after the restart, Egypt coach Osama Nabih introduced Mohamed Raafat and Seif El-Deen Essam to inject fresh energy, but the substitutions failed to stem Sierra Leone's momentum.
Kamara leveled in the 63rd minute with a curling left-footed strike from the edge of the box, then completed his brace three minutes later, slotting home from close range after a defensive lapse.
Sierra Leone extended their lead when the VAR awarded a penalty for a handball by Egypt defender Ahmed Samir, with Bah converting emphatically in the 79th minute.
Kamara completed his hat-trick deep into stoppage time, firing a clinical left-footed shot into the net from distance following a rapid counterattack.
The result sends Sierra Leone top of Group A with four points, while Egypt drop to third on three points, level with second-placed South Africa, who edged Tanzania 1-0 earlier on Wednesday, with the Young Bafana Bafana holding the advantage on goal difference.
Up next, the young Pharaohs will face a do-or-die game against Zambia on Saturday if they want to advance to the next stage, as the top two teams in each group, along with the two best third-placed sides, will progress to the quarter-finals.

Tennis: Djokovic takes a medical timeout for a toe blister in a victory over Moutet - Omni sports

Novak Djokovic dealt with a blister on his big left toe that required a medical timeout in the third set, then was one point from being forced to a fourth, before closing out a 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (1) victory over Corentin Moutet at the French Open on Thursday. 'With him, anything's possible,' Djokovic said. 'But I managed to find the right shots to stay in the match.' The result put Djokovic in the third round at Roland-Garros for the record 20th time — not even Rafael Nadal managed that. Two more wins, and Djokovic will get to the tournament's quarterfinals for the 16th consecutive year. In 2024, though, he withdrew before playing in that round after tearing the meniscus in his right knee during the fourth round and needing surgery. Djokovic has won three of his men's-record 24 Grand Slam titles in Paris. Against the left-handed Moutet, a Frenchman, Djokovic got broken in the opening game at Court Suzanne-Lenglen, and the crowd roared. But soon enough, Djokovic was in control. It wasn't until 2-all in the third set that some trouble arose. Djokovic, who went on a nighttime bicycle ride in the center of Paris on Wednesday, slid into a forehand and held up, then hopped with all of his weight on his right foot. He stepped gingerly to the sideline and requested a visit from a trainer, who treated and taped the problematic big toe. Soon, Moutet was mean-mugging toward his entourage in the stands after breaking to lead 4-2 in the third. Djokovic would break right back, but again faced a difficult spot while down 6-5 and facing a set point as the locals sang Moutet's last name. But Moutet netted a backhand passing shot, and once they got to a tiebreaker, Djokovic was simply too good. That hasn't been the case as often as usual this season, which has included a pair of three-match losing streaks for the 38-year-old from Serbia. But Djokovic ended his latest rut by winning his 100th career title at the Geneva Open before arriving at Roland-Garros. 'Before last week's tournament in Geneva, I didn't feel confident in my game. But it's normal to feel that way, because I hadn't won enough matches,' Djokovic said. 'I'm like any other player in that respect. I've had to work hard to win.' Côte d'Ivoire braced for tough U-17 World Cup test, says Diabate

Published: Thursday, 29 May 2025 Côte d'Ivoire U-17 head coach Bassiriki Diabate has admitted his side faces a daunting challenge at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025 after being drawn into what he described as a 'difficult group.' The Elephants will compete in Group F alongside Mexico, Korea Republic, and Switzerland — a trio of teams representing three different continents and styles of play. 'This draw placed us in a rather difficult group,' said Diabate following the draw in Doha on 25 May. 'We have Mexico from the Americas, Switzerland from Europe, and Korea Republic from Asia. It's quite a diverse group with some very strong teams, which will make this competition quite challenging for us.' The 2025 tournament will mark Côte d'Ivoire's return to the global U-17 stage, with the expanded 48-team format offering a bigger platform for African youth talent. But for Diabate and his technical team, the blend of football cultures in their group means preparation must be precise. 'Our players must be ready to face different football philosophies in a very short space of time,' Diabate added. 'It's a big learning opportunity, but also a massive test of tactical adaptability and mental strength.' The Elephants qualified for the global finals through a strong performance at the TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year. They are now tasked with making their mark against some of the game's best youth sides in Qatar. Mexico are traditionally strong at youth level, having won the U-17 World Cup twice (2005, 2011), while Korea Republic bring technical discipline and intensity. Switzerland, known for producing highly organized and physically robust sides, round off the group. Despite the challenges ahead, Diabate remains optimistic that Côte d'Ivoire can rise to the occasion. 'Our objective is to compete, grow, and show that Ivorian football has a bright future,' he said. 'We are not just going to participate — we aim to compete at the highest level.' The Elephants will open their campaign in Group F when the tournament begins on 3 November in Qatar. All eyes will be on how this young Ivorian side navigates one of the most intriguing groups in the expanded global showpiece.

South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco learn U-20 World Cup opponents tonight

The four African representatives at the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2025—South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt, and Morocco—will discover their group stage opponents tonight when the official draw is held in Santiago, Chile. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 22:00 GMT. Twenty-four nations will be drawn into six groups of four, kicking off the countdown to the global showpiece that will take place from 27 September to 19 October 2025 across Chile. South Africa enter the draw as African champions after a resilient campaign at the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, which culminated in a 1-0 win over Morocco in the final in Cairo. Their reward is a place in Pot 3, alongside Japan, Spain, Australia, Panama, and Norway, ensuring they avoid these teams in the group phase. Nigeria, a powerhouse in youth football and third-place finishers at the U-20 AFCON, benefit from their strong pedigree and are placed in Pot 2. The Flying Eagles join heavyweights such as France, Argentina, and Mexico in that pot, meaning they won't face any of those sides in the initial round. Egypt and Morocco, both semi-finalists at the continental tournament, find themselves in Pot 4. Their lower seeding, due to fewer recent appearances at the U-20 World Cup, increases the likelihood of drawing multiple top-ranked nations, including tournament hosts Chile or former champions Brazil and Italy from Pot 1. With top talents such as Tylon Smith—South Africa's Player of the Tournament—and Moroccan winger Jones El-Abdellaoui set to feature, the African quartet will be keenly watching as their journey in Chile begins to take shape tonight. Africa has a rich history in youth tournaments, and with all four sides showing promise during qualifying, expectations are high for a strong showing. The draw will determine whether the continent's finest young stars can rise to the challenge on the global stage. Fans across the continent can follow news on as the path to Chile 2025 officially begins. Draw procedures The nations will be drawn into six groups of four teams. For the draw, the teams have been allocated into four pots of six teams, according to the FIFA ranking system. As hosts, Chile have automatically been placed in Pot 1. Pot 1: Chile (hosts), Italy, USA, Korea Republic, Brazil, Colombia Pot 2: New Zealand, France, Ukraine, Argentina, Nigeria, Mexico Pot 3: Japan, Spain, South Africa, Australia, Panama, Norway Pot 4: Saudi Arabia, Paraguay, Egypt, Cuba, Morocco, New Caledonia
