Cambodian soldier killed in clash with Thai army at disputed border
BANGKOK: A Cambodian soldier was killed on Wednesday (May 28) after an exchange of gunfire with the Thai army at the border, a Cambodian army spokesman said, a rare fatality in a long sensitive frontier region.
"One of our soldiers died during the fight, and there were some injuries, but we don't have detailed figures yet, said Cambodian Royal Army spokesman Mao Phalla.
The Royal Thai Army said in a statement that the clash happened after Cambodian soldiers started firing near Ubon Ratchathani province in Thailand's east.
Thai soldiers fired back in response to gunshots from Cambodia's border force, leading to an exchange lasting around 10 minutes before the Cambodians requested a ceasefire, according to the Thai army statement.
Mao Phalla confirmed "there were clashes", but said Thai soldiers had attacked Cambodian troops who were on border patrol duty in northern Preah Vihear province, which borders Ubon Ratchathani.
"Our soldiers died in the trenches. The Thais came to attack us," he said.
Bloody military clashes between Cambodia and Thailand erupted in 2008 over the site of an ancient Khmer temple in Preah Vihear located near the border.
The row over a patch of land next to the 900-year-old Preah Vihear temple led to several years of sporadic violence, resulting in at least 28 deaths before the International Court of Justice ruled the disputed area belonged to Cambodia. - AFP

The Kingdom's Law on Suppression of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation explained that anyone who possesses, distributes, sells, rents, displays, screens or publicly shows pornographic images shall face a term of imprisonment of from 7 days to 1 month and a fine of 100,000 to 200,000 riel (US$25 to US$50). The production of pornographic images or materials carries a prison term of from 1 month to 1 year and a fine of 100,000 (US$25) to 2,000,000 riels (US$500). Anwar says Malaysia supports Thai-Cambodia peace talks on June 14, offers to help de-escalate tensions
PUTRAJAYA, June 7 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today Malaysia is prepared to help Thailand and Cambodia reach a peaceful solution amid tension along the two countries' borders. Malaysia currently chairs the ten-member Association of South-east Asian Nations (Asean), and Anwar held talks last night with the prime ministers of both countries as he sought to de-escalate the dispute, which reportedly caused one fatality. 'I have spoken to both of them and they've taken steps that we support, that includes dialogue at a meeting on June 14,' he told reporters after performing the Aidiladha prayers here. 'We are ready to observe and help if necessary, but so far, both nations have agreed to talk.' Thai and Cambodian troops were reported to have engaged in a brief skirmish in Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province and Cambodia's Preah Vihear province on May 28, which killed one Cambodian soldier. Phnom Penh said it plans to bring the matter to the International Court of Justice, while Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra yesterday expressed willingness to solve the dispute peacefully.

Malaysia supports June 14 Thailand-Cambodia border talks
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says Malaysia supports the measures taken by Thailand and Cambodia in addressing the border dispute involving both countries. Anwar said that Malaysia, as the Chair of ASEAN 2025, is prepared to follow the development of the negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia that is slated for June 14, in addition to providing the cooperation required in the talks. 'I spoke with both the Prime Ministers (of Thailand and Cambodia)... they have taken several measures that we support, namely the June 14 talks regarding the Thailand-Cambodia border dispute. 'I'm ready to follow and provide the cooperation (that is) required. So far, both governments have taken the stance of continuing negotiations amicably,' he told the media after performing the solat sunat Aidiladha with about 15,000 congregants at Masjid Putra here today. On May 28, Thai and Cambodian troops were involved in a brief skirmish in Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province and Cambodia's Preah Vihear province, which reportedly resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. Cambodia has since announced its intention to bring the border dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Thailand, meanwhile, has reportedly reiterated its commitment to resolving the issue peacefully in accordance with international law, as well as existing agreements and memoranda with Cambodia. Following the tension, the two neighbours have agreed to discuss the issue through the Joint Boundary Commission scheduled to be held in Phnom Penh on June 14. This is expected to be a crucial step towards a peaceful long-term resolution between the two ASEAN neighbouring countries.
