Jagannath Rath Yatra: AI-based CCTVs Enhance Security, Traffic Management In Puri

The Puri district administration has deployed Al-based CCTV cameras to monitor the festivities and ensure security, surveillance, including traffic management during the Ratha Yatra 2025.
Speaking on the matter, Additional Director General of Police (Traffic), Dayal Gangwar, highlighted the significance of this technology in maintaining order and safety of devotees coming from cities, including Bhubaneswar and Konark. Mr Gangwar informed that the AI-powered CCTV cameras are playing a crucial role in assisting with surveillance and security.
"Yesterday, devotees followed the traffic restrictions and traffic regulation plan, and the same will remain in place today. We request everyone to cooperate with us in this... The arrangements made yesterday for devotees coming from Bhubaneswar and Konark will remain the same today... We request everyone to adhere to our restrictions... The AI system is greatly assisting us.", ADG Traffic Dayal Gangwar told ANI on Saturday.

A sea of devotees gathered in Puri on Friday to witness the world-famous Jagannath Rath Yatra, as Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, embarked on the ceremonial journey from the Shri Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple. All rituals related to the Rath Yatra are being conducted as per schedule amid heightened security arrangements, with coordinated efforts from multiple security forces and district authorities.
Speaking to ANI about the arrangements, Puri District Magistrate Siddharth Swain said, "...The yatra route is full of devotees. All rituals related to the Rath Yatra will be conducted on time. Police have been deployed since last night. This time, NDRF has also been deployed... Yesterday, we removed illegal 6-7 drones. Flying of drones over Shri Jagannath Temple and the Gundicha temple is not allowed."
A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been stationed in Puri as a precautionary measure due to the high footfall and scale of the event.
NDRF Deputy Commandant Naveen Rana said, "Our personnel are trained to handle all situations, including any medical emergency, structure collapse or any other. We had conducted four mock drills along with the District Administration here."
The yatra drew lakhs of devotees, many of whom had travelled from different parts of the country and abroad to to witness the grand chariots of the three deities, Lord Jagannath, his brother Lord Balabhadra, and sister goddess Subhadra, at the Gundicha temple, where the deities reside for a week and then return to Jagannath temple.
Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi extended a heartfelt welcome to devotees on the occasion of the annual Rath Yatra, urging them to participate with utmost faith and devotion.In his message, CM Majhi said, "Join the Rath Yatra with faith and devotion, witness the divine glimpse of Mahaprabhu atop the chariot, and receive His blessings."

Odisha Congress demands judicial probe into Puri Rath Yatra "mismanagement"
Bhubaneswar, June 29 (UNI) Senior Congress leader and former Odisha minister Prasad Harichandan today demanded a judicial inquiry by the sitting District Judge of Puri to investigate the alleged "chaos and mismanagement" during this year's Rath Yatra in the temple town of Puri. Harichandan said the judicial inquiry should be announced within ten days after Niladri Bije, along with appropriate action against those responsible. He pointed out that for the first time in 53 years, the chariot pulling was synchronised to occur on a single day, combining Nabajoubana Darshan, Netrotsav, and the Gundicha Yatra on June 27. "Rath Yatra has been celebrated for over 1,200 years. On many occasions in the past, the chariot pulling and the arrival of all three chariots at the Gundicha Temple were completed on a single day," Harichandan said. However, he added, this year, the chariots Taladhwaja and Darpadalana failed to reach their destination, while Nandighosha, the chariot of Lord Jagannath, barely moved — only enough to maintain tradition. 'So, the big question is — why was the chariot pulling halted, and for whom?' he asked. Harichandan referred to media reports ahead of the Rath Yatra that claimed industrialist Gautam Adani would visit Puri, pull the chariot, and partake in temple rituals. However, Adani did not arrive in Puri on the day of the Yatra. The Congress leader questioned whether the pulling of the chariots was deliberately postponed to the next day just for him. Reacting to the statement of Sri Jagannath Temple's Chief Administrator, Arabinda Padhi — who had said, 'Perhaps some devotees did not turn up, so Nandighosha didn't move' — Harichandan said the comment was 'shocking and painful.' He alleged that this year, the entire management of Rath Yatra was handed over to the ruling party. Political event managers replaced government officials, scheduled timings were altered arbitrarily, and a two-hour delay occurred between the Pahandi (procession) and Chhera Pahanra (ceremonial sweeping). Referring to last year's incident, Harichandan recalled that Lord Balabhadra's chariot had met with an accident during the Pahandi at the Gundicha Temple while descending the Charamala. No cause was identified, and no action was taken. 'This year, Taladhwaja faced a delay in turning southward, and around 750 people were injured in the crowd crush on Rath Yatra day,' he said. He further alleged that despite objections from the Director General of Police, a private agency named 'IG Drone' was given control of the Closed-Circuit Integrated Command System for the Rath Yatra. Citing a serious security lapse, Harichandan claimed that Priyanka, a female friend of Jyoti Malhotra — who is allegedly linked to ISI — was seen inside the secured cordon zone. 'How did she manage to enter such a high-security area, right in front of the District Collector?' he questioned. The Congress leader also alleged that more than 5,000 entry passes were distributed, leading to widespread allegations of irregularities, discrimination and selective discretion on the part of the Puri District Collector. He pointed out that the Rath Yatra is being conducted in the absence of a formally constituted Sri Jagannath Temple Managing Committee. Although Gajapati Maharaj has repeatedly raised this concern and even met the Chief Minister over the issue, no concrete action has been taken. 'The Law Minister has now claimed the matter is sub-judice, conveniently shirking responsibility,' he added. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi on Sunday sought forgiveness from devotees of Lord Jagannath after three devotees were killed and over 50 others were injured after a stampede broke out near Gundicha Temple during Rath Yatra in Puri. He also tendered an apology on behalf of his government for the incident and pledged strict action against those responsible for the lapses in crowd control and security arrangements. 'I and my government seek forgiveness from all Jagannath devotees. Administrative Probe Ordered Into Puri Tragedy Majhi also chaired a meeting with his deputies to asses the situation and ordered a full-fledged administrative inquiry to determine the cause and accountability of the incident. The investigation will be led by the Chairman of the Development Commissioner. In a major administrative shake-up, the Puri District Collector and Superintendent of Police (SP) have been transferred. Chanchal Rana has been appointed as the new District Collector of Puri, while senior officer Pinak Mishra has been named the new SP. In addition, disciplinary action has been taken against other officials for alleged dereliction of duty. DCP Bishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhi have been suspended following preliminary findings of negligence in managing the crowd and ensuring safety. Some devotees had sat down near the area as the pahandi was delayed. When the gates were opened, the crowd's eagerness intensified, leading to a sudden surge and stampede-like situation. He said that there was negligence at some level and lapse somewhere. 'I have already informed the Chief Minister this morning. 'The Chief Minister has already committed to action. DGP visited the site, reviewed the situation, and has briefed the CM about the incident. The minister reiterated that a thorough investigation is underway and that the government is committed to ensuring accountability and improving safety protocols for future events. What Happened In Puri? The stampede took place in front of the chariot of Lord Jagannath, Nandighosh, when it reached the Gundicha Temple around 4-5 am on Sunday, Puri District Collector Siddharth S Swain said as quoted by news agency PTI. Chaos ensued after two trucks carrying materials for rituals reportedly entered the crowded spot near the chariots of Lord Jagannath and his sibling deities, officials said. When the three chariots reached their destination, a huge crowd of devotees gathered to have darshan of the deity, which lead to the collapse of the crowd barriers. As a result, several devotees fell over each other near the wheels of the chariot. The injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital, and the condition of six people is critical, he said. The deceased have been identified as Basanti Sahu from Bolagarh of Khorda district, Premakanti Mohanty, and Prabhati Das from Athantara village under Balianta block. The bodies have been sent for postmortem and an investigation is underway. Political leaders across parties and civil society members have urged the government to conduct a transparent inquiry and ensure such lapses do not recur. Five arrested in Bangladesh for raping Hindu woman, circulating video; MEA urges protection of minorities
Bangladesh police arrest accused for raping Hindu woman (Image credits: ANI) Police in Bangladesh have arrested five individuals in connection with the rape of a Hindu woman and the circulation of a video of the victim on social media. The incident took place in Ramchadrapur Panchkitta village under Muradnagar police station in Comilla district on Thursday. According to a police statement reported by ANI, the main accused, 36-year-old Fajr Ali, was caught by local residents while allegedly raping the wife of an expatriate from the same village. He was beaten by the villagers but managed to flee the scene. "Some people present at the scene immediately recorded a video of the victim and spread it on social media," the statement quoted by ANI added. The disturbing footage, which went viral, shows the victim naked and pleading for her dignity. A case has been registered at Muradnagar Police Station. Authorities have arrested Fajr Ali along with four others who allegedly recorded and circulated the video. Police confirmed that legal proceedings are underway against all five accused. The incident comes amid growing concern over violence against religious minorities and women in Bangladesh. On May 31, various organisations held a human chain and protest rally in front of the national press club in Dhaka, condemning violence against minority communities. The protest was organised by Sammilita Sanatan Parishad, a minority alliance. In response to recent incidents, India's ministry of external affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a June 27 briefing that it is the responsibility of Bangladesh's interim government to ensure the safety of Hindus and other minorities. He made the remarks in the context of an attack on a Durga temple.
