Go on, recline your seat: Experts offer eight tips for a more restful flight

The average economy class seat - with its more-than-75cm pitch, limited recline and barely-there legroom - may not be the most ideal setting for travellers looking to get a solid snooze at 30,000 ft.
Yet, long-haul flights are getting longer, making restful sleep in the air less of a luxury and more of a necessity.
Australian flag carrier Qantas is set to launch non-stop flights from Sydney to London in 2027, which will take over 20 hours. And on June 3, Scoot launched flights from Singapore to Austrian capital Vienna, the low-cost carrier's longest non-stop route at roughly 13 hours.
With minimal adjustability and basic features, economy class seats embody what Mr Yogesh Tadwalkar, director of ergonomics consulting company Synergo Consulting and health tech start-up BalanceFlo AI, describes as an "all-for-all design".
"All-for-all designs are good for no one. This is a common design issue in the field of human factors where things get so generic that they don't work well for anybody," he says.
Mr Zephan Chan, a director at Singapore consultancy Institute of Ergonomics and Hygiene (IEH), and Ms Phoebe Huang, IEH's head of ergonomics, agree.
They list "prolonged awkward and sedentary posture" among the ergonomic risk factors that contribute to physical malaise during flights.
"Without proper lumbar, head or neck support, some of the consequences are lower back and shoulder discomfort. Sitting still for long hours on a plane can also restrict blood flow and cause lower limb discomfort or, in more serious cases, deep vein thrombosis," she says.
Today, nearly 80 per cent of all seats on commercial aircraft are economy class seats, according to a December 2024 article on travel booking platform Booking.com.
The article also said economy tickets typically cost between 30 and 50 per cent less than premium economy, and up to 80 per cent less than business class airfare.
In order to remain accessible, the design of economy seating is largely utilitarian. Seats are built to be durable and easy to clean, with comfort often taking a back seat to cost efficiency.
Psychiatrist and sleep physician Wong Sheau Hwa, who runs a private practice, says environmental factors like noise, lighting, air quality and temperature are heightened in economy class due to the shared, confined space. This may build stress and anxiety in passengers, and make it harder to fall asleep.
"The ideal setting for restful sleep is somewhere comfortable and familiar, and where you feel safe," adds Dr Wong, who was the deputy chairman of the Civil Aviation Medical Board, a division within the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, from 2019 to 2022.
Travellers who are light sleepers, like healthcare worker Natalie Lim, may also find it harder to sleep well on planes.
Ms Lim, 31, who travels two to three times a year and flies mostly in economy class, says small movements from other passengers - like using her seatback as support when getting up or shuffling to go to the washroom - often wake her easily.
She says: "Usually, I take along a hoodie and wear it backwards with the hood covering my face to block out light. I also listen to music on my earphones instead of using ear plugs, so it drowns out cabin noise more effectively."

A 30-year airport traffic forecast by global organisation Airports Council International World, released in February, projected that global passenger numbers will reach 22.3 billion by 2053. This is nearly 2.4 times its projected volume in 2024.
With traveller numbers set to grow exponentially, it is unlikely that economy seats will improve in comfort.
"Economy class seats are designed without many adjustable functions because airlines are trying to manage the high variability in population and keeping the maintainability of the seats low," says Mr Tadwalkar, who also served as the president of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Singapore from 2007 to 2014.
"Technically, it's very easy to make economy class seats more adjustable. But if thousands of people are using the functions repeatedly - let's say, over a month - then it's more likely to break. That's why it's easier to just make a fixed product," he adds.
While airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Eva Air have introduced some ergonomic features in their seats - like six-way adjustable headrests and ergonomically designed backrest contours - the road to a fully supportive and comfortable economy class seat is long.

Nonetheless, experts say there are ways to catch some good shut-eye without needing to upgrade to a premium class. Here are eight tips from the pros.
1. Do use sleep accessories
One of the biggest barriers to sleep on a plane is the sensory overload. Bright cabin lights, crying babies and the steady hum of the engines can make it hard to drift off. Pack a good quality eye mask and noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs to create your own sensory bubble.
Look for features that can more effectively counter environmental sleep disruptions, like total blackout eye masks with contoured eye cushions or earplugs that mould to the shape of your inner ear.
IEH's Mr Chan says these tools can help block out disruptions and help your body relax - even while your seatmate is still wide awake.
2. Do keep your neck and spine aligned
Your spine is not built to sleep in an upright position and, when forced to do so, pressure builds in the neck and lower back - making it harder to maintain a comfortable posture for sleep.
Dr Kelvin Ng, clinic director at Family Health Chiropractic Clinic, says the amount of pressure on one's spinal discs increases significantly when sitting versus standing.
Standing subjects your spine to pressure equivalent to around 100 per cent of your body weight, while sitting upright increases that to 150 per cent and bending forward to pick something up can increase it to 275 per cent, he adds.
Dr Ng advises travellers to use a supportive travel pillow that allows the neck to remain in a stable position, and suggests they place a pillow or rolled-up article of clothing behind their lower backs to maintain lumbar support. Both can help create a more comfortable posture that will aid good rest.
3. Do recline your seat
While some passengers may hesitate out of courtesy, the recline feature is meant to be used - especially on red-eye flights. Just be mindful of meal times or the person behind you before reclining all the way.
Mr Tadwalkar says that, ideally, seats should be reclined to achieve a resting angle of between 100 and 120 degrees for better sleep.
Online, aviation and traveller communities estimate the average economy class seat recline pitch to be between 5 and 15cm, or roughly between five and 19 degrees.
While attaining the optimal resting angle may be difficult in economy class, just a few centimetres of recline can help to take pressure off your lower back and reduce strain on your neck, he says.

4. Do visit a chiropractor
If you frequently experience back or neck pain after flying, it might be worth consulting a chiropractor. Some travellers have underlying posture issues that are made worse in cramped seating.
Dr Ng says travellers can consider visiting a chiropractor before their trip to identify misalignments and get recommended exercises or support tailored to their bodies to ensure better spine health.
For instance, for those with forward head posture - a condition in which the head extends forward from the shoulders, and is common among people who use their devices for extended periods - doing a neck retraction exercise by drawing the chin back several times can help to improve neck strength and flexibility.
5. Don't rely on your footrest
Economy class footrests - if available - make for good temporary relief, especially when trying to improve circulation.
But Mr Tadwalkar advises keeping your feet flat on the floor and avoiding prolonged use of footrests.
He explains that propping one's feet up on footrests often strains the knees and closes the hip angle - the angle between the upper body and thighs - to less than 90 degrees.
"The less-than-90-degree angle has three effects. First, it compresses your internal organs, resulting in discomfort. Second, it hampers the natural blood circulation to the lower body, causing soreness in the feet. And most importantly, it takes away the natural 'S' curve of your back, and instead puts it in kyphosis, which is an excessive rounding of the spine into a 'C' shape, leading to backache," he says.
Dr Ng also discourages passengers from sleeping with their feet on their seats and hugging knees to their chests, as it increases pressure on the spine and unnecessarily strains muscles.
6. Don't take sleep medication excessively
It may be tempting to take a sleeping pill, but Dr Wong cautions that sleep aids may impair cognitive function and affect one's ability to respond adequately in the event of an emergency.
"While sleep aids may improve the ability to get to sleep, the sleep obtained may not necessarily be restful," he says, adding that people often consume melatonin - a supplement used to promote sleep - in the hope that it will induce sleepiness in the same way sleeping pills do.
"If you use melatonin like a sleeping pill, you'll be utterly disappointed. It does help with sleep but if one uses it wrongly, it might create more problems, like pushing your natural sleep timing back," he explains.

He observes that people often self-medicate with melatonin and take various doses at different timings. "The correct window to take it is at a natural, physiological timing before sleep, which could be at around 8 or 9pm, rather than immediately before sleep," Dr Wong says.
Consult a doctor before consuming sleeping aids and test it on land before using it in the air.
7. Don't keep your arms on the armrest
While armrests may feel like the only place to rest your elbows, leaving your arms there for hours can restrict blood flow and cause shoulder or neck tension.
Mr Tadwalkar says most armrests in today's commercial aircraft are typically built too high for the average Asian person.
It props their elbows up and creates more tension in the shoulders and thoracic spine, which includes the mid-back region between the neck and lower back. Instead, he suggests supporting your arms on a pillow or relaxing them on your upper thighs.
Using a small blanket or scarf to create a cradle for your arms by draping the fabric over your shoulders, and loosely tying it at the front or back, can also relieve muscle strain while you sleep.
8. Don't refuse food or snacks
Many passengers skip meals to try sleeping through the flight, but an empty stomach can make it harder to fall asleep - and stay asleep.

"If you're hungry, it's often impossible to sleep because it feels very uncomfortable. Keep snacks handy and have something here and there before you fly or somewhere in the middle of the flight," Dr Wong says.
Opt for in-flight snacks like cheese and crackers, or take along your own. Avoid caffeine and sugar close to bedtime, as these can disrupt sleep cycles.
Steer clear of greasy and spicy foods too close to bedtime, as foods high in fat are harder to digest and may cause indigestion, while spices can trigger heartburn.

The low-cost carriers that have taken to Singapore skies

[SINGAPORE] News of the impending shutdown of Jetstar Asia, with the loss of more than 500 jobs, has sent shockwaves through the aviation sector. Comments on social media site Reddit lamented the budget carrier's closure as it was the only airline that plied between Singapore and the holiday destinations of Okinawa in Japan, Wuxi in China, Labuan Bajo in Indonesia and Broome in Australia. On Wednesday (Jun 11) the Qantas unit announced its closure and said that its last day of operations would be Jul 31. Budget flights have become a staple of the travel industry, accounting for one-third of the 49.8 million passengers who passed through Changi Airport in the first nine months of 2024. As the low-cost carrier scene continues to battle stiff competition, rising fuel costs, price wars and the entry of new players, The Business Times takes a look back at the Singapore budget carrier landscape. Early 2000s: Budget airlines take off Budget airlines made their appearance in the Singapore aviation sector in the early 2000s, bringing cheap fares and new destinations to an emerging class of cost-conscious travellers. Sign Up Sign Up With their trademark low fees and no-frills offerings, they revolutionised travel and made flying – once considered a luxury – much more affordable and accessible. South-east Asia underwent a budget travel boom after Malaysia's Tony Fernandes pioneered the low-cost carrier model in the region with AirAsia in 2002. Singapore's first low-cost carrier Valuair took flight in May 2004, ferrying 162 passengers on its maiden trip from Changi Airport to Bangkok. The privately owned startup was co-founded by former SIA deputy chairman Lim Chin Beng, alongside other investors. With fares at a fraction of those offered by full-service airlines – up to 40 to 50 per cent lower – it became a competitor to SIA's now-defunct subsidiary SilkAir, which plied regional routes. That same year, SIA Group launched Tiger Airways with state investor Temasek, while the founders of Irish budget carrier Ryanair and Australia's flag carrier Qantas established Jetstar Asia. The year 2005 proved to be a rocky one for low-cost carriers as fuel costs rose and full-service carriers slashed prices to never-seen-before levels to compete with and undercut their budget rivals. Governments in the region, such as Indonesia, also shut their doors to foreign budget carriers. This left Singapore-based airlines with only a few crowded regional routes to compete in. That year, Jetstar Asia and Valuair merged under the holding company Orangestar, with both retaining their original names. Amid challenging conditions, the two carriers struggled to make money. Still, there was no stopping travellers' wanderlust. In 2007, Jetstar Asia and Tiger Airways featured on a list of Changi Airport's top 10 carriers by passenger numbers. In January 2010, Tiger Airways listed on the mainboard of the Singapore Exchange (SGX). Entrances and exits: Players scoot in and out Over the years, Singapore's budget carrier market expanded by 21 per cent from 2004 to 2024, outpacing that of full-service airlines, which grew 1.4 per cent, according to Alton Aviation Consultancy. The number of budget flights from Changi Airport also soared with the expansion of low-cost airlines. From just 1,705 flights in 2004, the number of budget flights from the airport climbed to 16,798 in 2009 and hit a peak in 2018 with 64,618 flights to more than 100 cities. But as air fares and earnings fell, carriers scaled back on operations, causing a string of consolidations and exits. Indonesian budget airline Tigerair Mandala ceased operations in 2014, when its shareholders pulled the plug on funding. Tiger Airways owned a 35.8 per cent stake in the loss-making carrier, which had contributed to it racking up hefty losses for the financial year ended March 2014. During this time, SIA launched a new and second low-cost carrier, Scoot, in 2012, in response to growing competition with brands such as Jetstar and AirAsia. It made its inaugural voyage to Sydney in June that year. Scoot was meant to capture the medium- and long-haul market, while Tiger Airways would focus on short-haul flights. Tiger Airways, which had been renamed Tigerair, struggled with consecutive full-year operating losses for FY2014 and FY2015. The airline began to scale back its regional ambitions amid fierce competition, exiting the markets of Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Taiwan. Eventually, SIA took it private in 2016. Tigerair was then folded into Scoot in 2017 as SIA consolidated its two budget carriers under the holding company Budget Aviation Holdings, to operate them under the Scoot brand, which fared better in market perception on issues such as comfort, safety and service quality. The merger also aimed to boost cooperation between the two carriers and cut costs. Meanwhile, Jetstar Asia enjoyed growth in the early part of the 2010s, as higher passenger numbers and an expanded regional network brought its earnings to S$18 million for the financial year ended June 2011. However, its growth slowed near the end of the decade. As at 2018, its share of Singapore's low-cost carrier market shrank to less than 20 per cent from over a quarter in 2010, a Centre for Aviation report showed. By then, its rival carrier Scoot had grown rapidly. Pandemic turbulence and recovery Covid-19 dealt the aviation sector a heavy blow with the curbs on travel. The inevitable result was that Changi Airport's budget flight numbers dived and remained below 50,000 for 2020, 2021 and 2022. In 2020, Jetstar Asia grounded its entire fleet, retired five aircraft and trimmed 26 per cent of its headcount or 180 staff. Scoot suspended most of its flights and pivoted to chartering cargo as its parent company SIA Group cut some 4,300 positions across its airlines By 2024, as the pandemic eased and travel recovered – with Changi Airport's budget airline passenger traffic reaching 101.6 per cent of 2019 levels between January and September of 2024 – low-cost carrier operators were poised to resume growth. Scoot added new destinations to its network, ramped up flights and expanded its fleet. In comparison, Jetstar's recovery was slower. Analysts observed that its 2024 capacity and traffic was only around half of pre-pandemic levels. Meanwhile, despite a surge in 'revenge travel', low-cost carriers continued facing headwinds. These included stiff regional competition, volatile fuel prices and geopolitical tensions. Challenges such as supply chain snags also delayed new plane deliveries and grounded existing ones, while sustainable aviation fuel mandates pushed costs up. Airlines cited rising costs – including the fees charged by Changi Airport – as a challenge to operating in Singapore. The Republic in November 2024 had announced airport fee hikes to fund upgrades to Changi Airport. The move was lamented by Jetstar Asia's chief executive John Simeone, who said it could affect the airline's ability to sell tickets under S$100 – which comprised around two-thirds of the carrier's flights as at December 2024. Jetstar Asia grounded When Jetstar Asia announced its exit – citing cost pressures as threatening its ability to offer the low fares that are key to its business – passengers and staff were shocked, but industry experts said the move was unsurprising, albeit unfortunate. They pointed to how the Singapore-based carrier had struggled to turn a profit even before the pandemic, and was in the black for only six years in more than two decades of operations. Jetstar Asia lacked the scale, local dominance and margin buffers of its stronger rivals, analysts said. Moreover, its 2023 shift to Terminal 4 from Terminal 1, where its parent Qantas operates, severed the seamless connectivity between the two airlines and lengthened connecting times, which likely worsened its problems, analysts added. However Qantas itself has displayed a respectable performance. Qantas Airways in February announced an underlying profit before tax of A$1.39 billion (S$1.17 billion) for its first half ended December. It also declared its first special dividend in more than two decades and its first final dividend since September 2019. What does Jetstar's departure mean? Jetstar's exit leaves Scoot the sole Singapore-based budget carrier and closes a chapter on the once high-flying budget carrier scene. As Changi Airport Group works with other carriers to plug connectivity gaps in the dust of Jetstar Asia's departure, one thing is for certain: There will always be a demand for budget travel – but whether it is a profitable business remains to be seen.

SINGAPORE: More than 500 Jetstar Asia staff based in Singapore will be laid off when the Qantas low-cost subsidiary ceases operations on Jul 31. The closure was announced to employees through a company-wide email at about 7 a.m. on Thursday (Jun 12), just before the public announcement. While some found the move 'extreme,' others appreciated what they described as an 'attractive' severance package, Channel News Asia (CNA) reported. Shortly after the official announcement, a company town hall was held at Changi Airport Terminal 1, with an option to attend virtually, a flight attendant said. During the meeting, management discussed the company's challenges, including operating expenses and fuel prices, as reasons for Jetstar Asia's closure. A cabin crew member who had worked for Jetstar Asia for three years said the news was 'sad and disappointing.' 'The management did call us up individually and asked us how we are coping and are we okay, because we still have to work,' he said. Meanwhile, a pilot who joined the company less than a year ago told CNA that they had 'no real clue' that such a 'quite sudden' move was coming. However, he noted that the severance package was 'attractive' and 'quite good,' especially for those who have been with the airline for longer. The severance package includes four weeks' salary for each year of service with the airline, a bonus for the current financial year, a special thank-you payment, and continued access to staff travel perks for a period equal to their tenure. Jetstar is also supporting employees in securing new roles across the aviation sector. Staff said they were given channels to other airlines, including Singapore Airlines (SIA), Emirates, and Qatar Airways, in addition to Jetstar Airways and Jetstar Japan. 'They handled it quite well, they tried to give us other opportunities,' the pilot said. Unions have also stepped in for support. Labour chief Ng Chee Meng said the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), the Singapore Manual and Mercantile Workers' Union (SMMWU), and NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) would be providing on-site support from next week at Changi's Terminal 1. Mr Ng said this includes career coaching, employability support, and training. Mr Ng added that they are exploring opportunities for SIA Group to match affected Jetstar Asia employees, including crew and corporate staff, to suitable roles where possible. SINGAPORE: Around 100 Air India pilots will be given opportunities for work with Scoot, Singapore Airlines' low-cost brand, the Hindu Business Line reported on Jun 8 (Sunday). Campbell Wilson, Air India's CEO and managing director, has called the programme a win-win for both Air India and Scoot. The programme will be on a voluntary basis and will allow Scoot to fill vacancies. At the same time, Air India's captains and first officers will have the opportunity to train on Embraer aircraft and gain international exposure. 'Air India pilots have been offered deputation to Scoot (Singapore Airlines' low-cost airline) on a voluntary basis. Here, they will also have the opportunity to train on Embraer 19 and Boeing 787s, the budget airline flies,' tweeted Indian aviation journalist Jagriti Chandra late last month. 'We actively seek talent within and outside Singapore, focusing on attracting and retaining qualified individuals who align with our values and can contribute to Scoot's continued growth,' Hindu Business Line quoted Scoot as saying. He had served as CEO of Scoot from 2011 to 2016 and again from 2020 to 2022. The CEO of Singapore Airlines, Goh Choon Phong, also spoke to Hindu Business Line, saying, 'Indian market continues to be strong, and we are optimistic about it. We are looking at how to collaborate closely with Air India.' Last year, Singapore Airlines carried more than 2.4 million travelers to and from India, with 65% of traffic flying onward or connecting from Singapore to India. The partnership between Singapore Airlines and Air India is not a new one. In November 2022, the Indian multinational conglomerate Tata Group announced that its airlines, Vistara and Air India, would merge, making it the country's largest international carrier and second-largest domestic carrier. Vistara is a joint venture between Tata and Singapore Airlines, established in 2013. The Indian conglomerate owns 51%, and SIA owns 49%. Following the completion of the merger between Air India and Vistara last year, it was reported that Singapore Airlines (SIA) held a 25.1% stake in the merged entity. 'Singapore Airlines (SIA) confirms the completion of the merger of Air India and Vistara. With this, SIA now holds a 25.1% stake in Air India.
