Crumbling water supply infra in Gurgaon leaves families in Sushant Lok 1 high & dry
Gurgaon: Outdated motors, "five-minutes of water supply" and pipelines that are simply not enough or are non-functional — Sushant Lok 1 residents are a harried lot.
"Hollow assurances and no action," is the common refrain among residents of Sushant Lok 1 who are reeling under an acute water crisis this summer.
In one of the posh localities in the city, hundreds of families in C and C1 blocks have been receiving little to no supply for over 70 days. Residents have demanded a complete overhaul of the water supply system, including the replacement of old pipelines, motors and tubewell machinery.
Private tankers costing "anywhere between Rs 800 and Rs 1,200 depending on demand" have burnt holes in the pockets of the residents — in absence of water supply — they say.
RWA president of Sushant Lok 1 Deepak Verma says, "None of the four boosting stations are running at full capacity. Motors are outdated, control panels frequently break down and pipelines — many just four inches in diameter — cannot meet the colony's growing demand."
MCG took over the colony from the developer in 2019, but residents say the civic body has done little to upgrade the decades-old infrastructure.
Built in the 1990s, the colony's water system was designed to serve a much smaller population and now it relies on GMDA's supply, which is further supplemented by 19 tubewells — only four of which are functional — serving more than 4,000 families in the affected blocks.

Despite repeated complaints and meetings with officials of the MCG, residents say they have received only assurances.
MCG executive engineer Sanjeev Kumar told TOI efforts are being made to address the issue.
Kumar said. "We prepared the estimate for the upgradation of boosting stations and are awaiting approval. We prepared the proposal for three more tubewells to supplement the shortfall of GMDA's supply and it is under process."
Anil Sharma, a resident of C Block who has lived here for the last 25 years, says, "This happens every summer for the last five years, but this year is the worst."
Sharma says, "We are getting barely four-five minutes of water on some days. We are entirely dependent on private tankers. MCG hasn't provided a single tanker."
Deepak Verma says a new underground tank was recently constructed in C Block, but key components such as the non-return valve (NRV) have not been installed.
Meanwhile, the C-1 Block tubewell is not connected with a power supply, leaving hundreds of families without a backup water source.
Residents are also seeking the installation of 10 additional tubewells, urgent repair of long-pending leakages and deployment of more ground-level staff for routine maintenance.
Verma says, "Even when the motors are repaired, they break down again within 24 hours. This patchwork approach is not working anymore. Over 500 families have been without potable water for months. The entire system is collapsing and no one is taking responsibility."

Tavarekere lake in Kushalnagar faces encroachment, pollution
Madikeri: Tavarekere lake in Kushalnagar is experiencing fresh encroachment and unchecked water contamination challenges, prompting local residents to call for its safeguarding. Despite allocated funds for lake conservation and improvement, no substantial progress was observed. Tavarekere lake is a significant landmark in Kushalnagar. Despite conservationists' persistent appeals for preservation, authorities' indifference jeopardises the lake's survival, they stated. In 2018, substantial encroachment was halted after the deputy commissioner intervened. Development and protection plans were proposed. However, despite numerous reports about encroachment and pollution, authorities remained unresponsive, said Chandramohan from Cauvery Swachata Andolana. He noted that local environmentalists notified officials when the lakebed was encroached. "We requested the establishment of a protection committee for lake preservation. Our efforts resulted in fund allocation for lake development," he said. The lake continues experiencing contamination whilst its boundaries face gradual encroachment, residents stated. "Untreated waste from nearby commercial establishments and sewage directly enters the lake through drainage systems, resulting in severe contamination," Chandramohan said. The Kushalnagar Urban Development Authority said Rs 3 crore was allocated for lake development and preservation. It will be taken up after the tender, the urban body stated.

Tolankere lake reels under stench from sewage-mixed water
Hubballi: The foul odour from Tolankere lake in Hubballi has been increasing day by day giving an unpleasant experience to visitors and commuters alike. Visitors and morning walkers have been complaining about the stench emanating from the sewage-mixed water. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now When the plan was made to develop the lake, it was filled with sewage. The lake and the park were developed under the Smart City project at a cost of about Rs 35 crore. Now, the development work is complete. The lake is now being managed by an agency with the income generated from the entry fee, and other activities at the park. Prakash Matti, a visitor, said, "The lake was developed under the Smart City project, but the authorities concerned failed to maintain it. Visitors to the park have to endure the foul smell. The HDMC should clean the lake and ensure proper maintenance." A resident of Kumar Park, Veeresh Patil, said till now, the officials have not found a way to prevent the entry of sewage water into the lake. Meanwhile, HDMC executive engineer Vittal Tubake said the entry of sewage water into the lake was completely blocked three or four months ago, but it will take time for the water to clear. "Efforts are being made to provide a permanent solution for this. However, it will take time," he said. "Now, the STP has been releasing only treated water into the lake. However, the old water has low oxygen levels and stinks. Necessary steps need to be taken to increase the oxygen levels in the water," he added.
