Sea swell affects 200 houses in Edavanakkad
Kochi: Sea swell continues to be a nightmare for Edavanakkad residents. Swell surge on Sunday was so intense that saline water entered compounds of around 200 houses in Kannupillakettu ward. The swell started around 11am and continued until 5pm. However, no family members wanted to move to relief centres. "Due to recurring sea swell, windows and doors of many houses in the coastal area of Edavanakkad were damaged badly. If they have to move to safe places, they must shift all their belongings with them. Otherwise, anti-social elements would rob them. That's why they remain in flooded houses. Issue of people in the coastal area of the panchayat will be addressed with the installation of tetrapods. Despite the recurring swell surge, no one is coming forward to mitigate the issue," said panchayat president V K Iqbal. A facility that was set up after tsunami to function as a relief camp, is in bad condition in Edavanakkad. Sea swell was also reported in Njarakkal, where three houses near ICAR building were affected. Seawall over 50m sank and saline water swept over the wall during swell surge and entered the three houses, which are only five metres away from seawall. Meanwhile, a hartal will be observed in Chellanam on June 30, demanding construction of tetrapod and seawall towards north direction of Puthenthode to protect the coast between Chellanam and Fort Kochi.
