KUWAIT CITY, KUWAIT, March 26, 2025 / EINPresswire.com / -- The Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) today announces the call for nominations for the 2025 Al Sumait Prize for African Development in the field of food security. Now in its 11th year, this prestigious award, valued at $1 million, is presented annually to individuals or institutions that have made significant contributions to the advancement of health, food security, or education in Africa.
The Al Sumait Prize is named in honour of the late Dr Abdulrahman Al-Sumait, a Kuwaiti physician who dedicated his life to helping disadvantaged communities across Africa. Established in 2015 at the request of the late Amir of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the prize recognizes groundbreaking research, innovative projects, and applied initiatives that contribute to Africa's sustainable development.
The Al Sumait Prize's Board of Trustees is led by Kuwait's Minister of Foreign Affairs and includes esteemed members from global organizations such as the Gates Foundation, FAO, UNESCO, and IAEA. Past laureates include renowned institutions such as the African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases and the Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), demonstrating the prize's commitment to impactful advancements.
For 2025, the prize will be awarded in the field of food security, recognizing individuals or institutions whose research projects or initiatives have significantly contributed to one or more of the following areas:

Eligible candidates include organizations and research institutions whose initiatives and programs have significantly contributed to solving food security challenges in Africa, as well as outstanding researchers nominated by their institutions or peers.
Submitted work must be innovative, have a demonstrable high impact in Africa, and contribute to economic, social, human resources, or infrastructure development within the field. Research should be published in peer-reviewed journals and recognized at a global level, with practical applications in African countries over the past ten years.

Ocean currents can generate electricity – and our study shows Africa's seas have some of the strongest
The world's oceans cover more than 70% of Earth's surface. They're filled with currents, some much stronger than the fastest flowing large rivers. These currents can be harnessed as clean, marine renewable energy. Marine energy is much more predictable and reliable than many other forms of renewable energy because unlike sun and wind, which regularly do not produce electricity, ocean currents never stop moving around the planet. New research has found that the eastern and south-eastern coasts of Africa have currents that put them among the world's top potential locations for ocean energy production. Researchers Mahsan Sadoughipour, James VanZwieten, Yufei Tang and Gabriel Alsenas explain what is needed to bring renewable marine energy into African countries' electricity mix. Ocean currents contain kinetic energy that can be converted to electrical power using turbines. This is similar to offshore wind farms, or wind turbines positioned in the ocean, that convert wind to electricity. The difference is that converting ocean currents to energy means the turbines would float on the surface or just under the surface of the ocean. The electricity they generate can be brought to shore using power cables under the sea (as is currently done with wind turbines in the sea). It could also be used to generate hydrogen offshore which could be transported and used as fuel. This would eliminate the need for subsea cables. We looked at 30 years of water velocity data – measurements of how fast the water moves (currents). We got the data from drifting buoys in the ocean. These devices are fitted with meteorological and oceanographic sensors that have been sent into the ocean. There are 1,250 of these buoys floating around the world's oceans today. They are designed to follow the water circulation in oceans so that they can constantly measure the speed and direction of ocean currents. They aren't blown around by the wind. They transmit information about ocean currents via satellite so that it can be made publicly available and used by scientists. We looked at 43 million measurements of ocean current speed and direction at specific locations and times over 30 years. From this, we were able to calculate the amount of energy stored in every metre squared of the ocean. This is known as energy density. This is a foundational step in determining the potential of ocean currents for generating clean and renewable energy. Our research is the first time this information has ever been generated. Prototypes have been developed and tested at sea from as far back as 1985. But there are no ocean current turbines feeding power to electrical grids at present. This delay between testing the prototypes and getting turbines up and running has happened because of the technical challenges in setting up these systems in deep water offshore environments. Developers have recently made new advances, however, improving the undersea cables and the microcomputers used in ocean current energy systems, and enhancing the design of the turbine blades. There have also been advances in developing stronger anchors for these systems. Read more: The new and advanced systems are being developed and tested in the waters off Florida (US), North Carolina (US), Japan and Taiwan. Engineers in South Africa and Mexico are also investigating the potential of ocean current turbine systems. We've identified high energy areas in the waters off Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania and Madagascar. They have some of the most energy dense currents on Earth, higher than the standard for wind energy resource to be classified as 'excellent'. These are potential sites for ocean energy production. An area in the ocean off the coast of South Africa also has potential. For example, we found areas with power densities ranging from 500 to 2,500 watts per square metre over an area around 800km by 30km off South Africa and around 2,000km by 30km off Somalia, Kenya and Tanzania. To put this into perspective, the average small household in South Africa uses on average about 730 watts of power. Therefore, every metre squared in the ocean that generates power could provide enough power for one small South African household. Read more: More research is needed, however. This is because we haven't been measuring the currents in the Indian Ocean as long as we have for other oceans. For example, Pacific Ocean currents have been measured since 1979 but the Indian Ocean currents have only been measured since 1994. Also, most of these high-energy areas are located in relatively deep water (over 1,000 metres deep). This could make it challenging to install ocean current turbines. On the positive side, these areas are relatively close to shore. There are also areas off South Africa, Somalia, Kenya and Madagascar where strong ocean current energy densities are found in waters as shallow as 100 metres. There is a good chance that relatively shallow and nearshore locations such as these will be the first places where ocean current based electricity will be generated off Africa. Scientists all over the world are conducting research into how to use the oceans' waves, tides and currents to generate energy. So, what's needed is for the projects to be developed. Usually, this starts with a project developer, community or electric company setting up a business to attract investment to get the project started. Then more technical work will be needed. This includes measuring the ocean currents closely to select the precise locations for the turbines, and figuring out how to connect the turbines to shore. The project developer then needs to bring everything together. Each project will cost a different amount, depending on how big it is and what technology is needs. Finding the start-up funds could be a challenge. The other stumbling block is that the technologies to harness ocean currents are not commercially viable yet. But they are developing fast. Ocean current energy is a compelling prospect for African countries in times of climate change. We finally may be able to rid the world of mosquitoes. But should we?
They buzz, they bite, and they cause some of the deadliest diseases known to humanity. Mosquitoes are perhaps the planet's most universally reviled animals. If we could zap them off the face of the Earth, should we? Subscribe to The Post Most newsletter for the most important and interesting stories from The Washington Post. The question is no longer hypothetical. In recent years, scientists have devised powerful genetic tools that may be able to eradicate mosquitoes and other pests once and for all. Now, some doctors and scientists say it is time to take the extraordinary step of unleashing gene editing to suppress mosquitoes and avoid human suffering from malaria, dengue, West Nile virus and other serious diseases. 'There are so many lives at stake with malaria that we want to make sure that this technology could be used in the near future,' said Alekos Simoni, a molecular biologist with Target Malaria, a project aiming to target vector mosquitoes in sub-Saharan Africa. Yet the development of this technology also raises a profound ethical question: When, if ever, is it okay to intentionally drive a species out of existence? Even the famed naturalist E.O. Wilson once said: 'I would gladly throw the switch and be the executioner myself' for malaria-carrying mosquitoes. But some researchers and ethicists warn it may be too dangerous to tinker with the underpinnings of life itself. Even irritating, itty-bitty mosquitoes, they say, may have enough inherent value to keep around. - - - How to exterminate mosquitoes Target Malaria is one of the most ambitious mosquito suppression efforts in the works. Simoni and his colleagues are seeking to diminish populations of mosquitoes in the Anopheles gambiae complex that are responsible for spreading the deadly disease. In their labs, the scientists have introduced a gene mutation that causes female mosquito offspring to hatch without functional ovaries, rendering them infertile. Male mosquito offspring can carry the gene but remain physically unaffected. The concept is that when female mosquitoes inherit the gene from both their mother and father, they will go on to die without producing offspring. Meanwhile, when males and females carrying just one copy of the gene mate with wild mosquitoes, they will spread the gene further until no fertile females are left - and the population crashes. Simoni said he hopes Target Malaria can move beyond the lab and deploy some of the genetically modified mosquitoes in their natural habitats within the next five years. The nonprofit research consortium gets its core funding from the Gates Foundation, backed by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, and Open Philanthropy, backed by Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz and his wife, Cari Tuna. 'We believe that this technology can really be transformative,' Simoni said. At the heart of Target Malaria's work is a powerful genetic tool called a gene drive. Under the normal rules of inheritance, a parent has a 50-50 chance of passing a particular gene on to an offspring. But by adding special genetic machinery - dubbed a gene drive - to segments of DNA, scientists can rig the coin flip and ensure a gene is included in an animal's eggs and sperm, nearly guaranteeing it will be passed along. Over successive generations, gene drives can cause a trait to spread across an entire species's population, even if that gene doesn't benefit the organism. In that way, gene drives do something remarkable: They allow humans to override Charles Darwin's rules for natural selection, which normally prods populations of plants and animals to adapt to their environment over time. 'Technology is presenting new options to us,' said Christopher Preston, a University of Montana environmental philosopher. 'We might've been able to make a species go extinct 150 years ago by harpooning it too much or shooting it out of the sky. But today, we have different options, and extinction could be completed or could be started in a lab.' - - - How far should we go in eradicating mosquitoes? When so many wildlife conservationists are trying to save plants and animals from disappearing, the mosquito is one of the few creatures that people argue is actually worthy of extinction. Forget about tigers or bears; it's the tiny mosquito that is the deadliest animal on Earth. The human misery caused by malaria is undeniable. Nearly 600,000 people died of the disease in 2023, according to the World Health Organization, with the majority of cases in Africa. On the continent, the death toll is akin to 'crashing two Boeing 747s into Kilimanjaro' every day, said Paul Ndebele, a bioethicist at George Washington University. For gene-drive advocates, making the case for releasing genetically modified mosquitoes in nations such as Burkina Faso or Uganda is straightforward. 'This is not a difficult audience, because these are people that are living in an area where children are dying,' said Krystal Birungi, an entomologist for Target Malaria in Uganda, though she added that she sometimes has to fight misinformation, such as the false idea that bites from genetically modified mosquitoes can make people sterile. But recently, the Hastings Center for Bioethics, a research institute in New York, and Arizona State University brought together a group of bioethicists to discuss the potential pitfalls of intentionally trying to drive a species to extinction. In a policy paper published in the journal Science last month, the group concluded that 'deliberate full extinction might occasionally be acceptable, but only extremely rarely.' A compelling candidate for total eradication, according to the bioethicists, is the New World screwworm. This parasitic fly, which lays eggs in wounds and eats the flesh of both humans and livestock, appears to play little role in ecosystems. Infections are difficult to treat and can lead to slow and painful deaths. Yet it may be too risky, they say, to use gene drives on invasive rodents on remote Pacific islands where they decimate native birds, given the nonzero chance of a gene-edited rat or mouse jumping ship to the mainland and spreading across a continent. 'Even at a microbial level, it became plain in our conversations, we are not in favor of remaking the world to suit human desires,' said Gregory Kaebnick, a senior research scholar at the institute. It's unclear how important malaria-carrying mosquitoes are to broader ecosystems. Little research has been done to figure out whether frogs or other animals that eat the insects would be able to find their meals elsewhere. Scientists are hotly debating whether a broader 'insect apocalypse' is underway in many parts of the world, which may imperil other creatures that depend on them for food and pollination. 'The eradication of the mosquito through a genetic technology would have the potential to create global eradication in a way that just felt a little risky,' said Preston, who contributed with Ndebele to the discussion published in Science. Instead, the authors said, geneticists should be able to use gene editing, vaccines and other tools to target not the mosquito itself, but the single-celled Plasmodium parasite that is responsible for malaria. That invisible microorganism - which a mosquito transfers from its saliva to a person's blood when it bites - is the real culprit. 'You can get rid of malaria without actually getting rid of the mosquito,' Kaebnick said. He added that, at a time when the Trump administration talks cavalierly about animals going extinct, intentional extinction should be an option for only 'particularly horrific species.' But Ndebele, who is from Zimbabwe, noted that most of the people opposed to the elimination of the mosquitoes 'are not based in Africa.' Ndebele has intimate experience with malaria; he once had to rush his sick son to a hospital after the disease manifested as a hallucinatory episode. 'We're just in panic mode,' he recalled. 'You can just imagine - we're not sure what's happening with this young guy.' Still, Ndebele and his colleagues expressed caution about using gene-drive technology. Even if people were to agree to rid the globe of every mosquito - not just Anopheles gambiae but also ones that transmit other diseases or merely bite and irritate - it would be a 'herculean undertaking,' according to Kaebnick. There are more than 3,500 known species, each potentially requiring its own specially designed gene drive. And there is no guarantee a gene drive would wipe out a population as intended. Simoni, the gene-drive researcher, agreed that there are limits to what the technology can do. His team's modeling suggests it would suppress malaria-carrying mosquitoes only locally without outright eliminating them. Mosquitoes have been 'around for hundreds of millions of years,' he said. 'It's a very difficult species to eliminate.' TYLER, Texas (KETK) — Every year around this time, the Sahara Desert in Africa experiences peak emissions that sends dust particles across the Atlantic Ocean, causing air quality changes in East Texas. Here's what we know about this phenomenon and how it could effect East Texans. Dust from Sahara brings hazy skies to East Texas Although allergy season is wrapping up, East Texans could still experience higher dust levels from the annual Sahara air layer that is heading this way. Its unknown exactly how much dust East Texans should anticipate, but they will likely see changes in visibility and air quality. KETK sat down with Professor and Center Director for Texas A&M AgriLife Research, Amarillo Brent Auvermann Ph.D. to talk about this environmental occurrence. 'It really is more of a general haze, things will change colors, sunlight will look different. the sun itself may look more red,' Auvermann said. 'At various times of the day, the clouds will be dingier in all likelihood and visibility will be somewhat reduced, depends on the intensity of the event. It is likely that air monitors that are monitoring air pollution at the ground level in East Texas will pick something up this time around,' Auvermann said. According to Google Maps, Texas and the Sahara Dessert are separated by over 7,000 miles of Atlantic Ocean water, which prompts people to question exactly how all this dust could travel that far without settling in the ocean. Once some of these particles reach humid air, they can absorb water which makes them become heavier and settle in more humid areas like East Texas. 'They might absorb water from the atmosphere in response to changes in relative humidity,' Auvermann said. 'So as it gets more humid, they might absorb more water, that makes the particle larger, probably makes it settle out faster.' The dust particles travel toward East Texas because of a natural steering current that causes the wind to blow west from the African coast all the way to eastern parts of the United States depending on latitude. One question that might be on the minds of East Texans is how will this dust effect residents and the environment. TRAFFIC ALERT: Road closures in Henderson County due to flooding Auvermann said it is believed that this dust event has been happening for arounds thousands of years leaving him to suspect that ecosystems have become somewhat used to its effects. As for humans, Auvermann recommends that those with respiratory or other allergy driven issues talk to a doctor about treatment. People who do not suffer from respiratory issues should also stay cautious of this dust event as it could effect anyone. 'Is it possible that somebody that had never been triggered to asthma might be triggered to something like this? Its possible and so again people will always want to be in touch with medical professionals,' Auvermann said.
