PNB Targets 10,000 Volunteer Hours To Foster Culture Of Service
GENERAL
KUALA LUMPUR, 27 May (Bernama) -- Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) is aiming to clock 10,000 hours of volunteer work in 2025 through activities such as tree planting, community clean-ups and environmental awareness programmes, in a bid to advance sustainability and social responsibility.
PNB Group chief operating officer Muzzaffar Othman said the target reflects the firm's continued commitment to creating positive social impact and strengthening a culture of volunteerism within the organisation.
'More than 500 PNB volunteers from various locations were brought together for the launch of the 2025 PNB Signature Volunteerism Day,' he said in a statement.
PNB recorded nearly 2,000 volunteer hours last year, contributed by 370 staff across various initiatives, and is now setting a higher target to build on that momentum, he added.
Muzzaffar was speaking at the PNB Signature Volunteerism Day event held recently at the Kuala Selangor Nature Park, a 2,400-acre protected reserve known for its biodiversity and conservation efforts.
The programme was held in collaboration with the Malaysian Nature Society, supported by the park, the Selangor State Forestry Department, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, the Kuala Selangor Municipal Council and the local community.
Volunteer activities were also carried out simultaneously at Amanah Saham Nasional Bhd (ASNB) branches in Melaka, Negeri Sembilan (Seremban), Perak (Ipoh), Johor Bahru (Batu Pahat), Pasir Puteh and Kota Bharu in Kelantan, as well as Bintulu, Sarawak.
The initiative is part of the group's wider strategy under the PNB Volunteerism Framework, launched in March 2024, which aims to promote inclusive participation and meaningful contribution among staff.
PNB has also rolled out a Social Investment Framework (SIF) to support projects in education, health, community development and environmental conservation, in line with its mission to strengthen the financial standing of Malaysians across generations.

It also encouraged the development of modern farms equipped with advanced irrigation technologies. It noted the rising demand for organic date production, driven by consumer preferences for healthy and natural products, along with the growing role of research and development in improving varieties and enhancing crop quality. The report further pointed to investment prospects in the manufacturing of date-based products, such as date paste as a natural sugar alternative, date syrup for local and international markets, and a range of goods including pastries, sweets, beverages and energy supplements marketed as health products. Significant export potential was also highlighted, particularly through the creation of specialised companies focused on packaging dates to meet international standards and attract global buyers. There is also room to expand into new export markets across Europe, Asia and North America. In addition, the report identified the potential for launching projects that collect date seeds from consumers for use in animal feed and the production of eco-friendly items, such as industrial wood made from palm by-products.

Ringgit closes lower against US dollar amid market uncertainty
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit closed lower against the US dollar on Friday amid renewed market uncertainty after a US federal appeals court granted the White House's request to temporarily pause a lower-court ruling which struck down President Donald Trump's tariffs on imports. At 6 pm, the local note decreased to 4.2530/2605 versus the greenback from Thursday's close of 4.2390/2475. Earlier, the US Court of International Trade had ruled that the tariffs announced by Trump were illegal. However, the Trump administration challenged the trade court ruling, leading to the tariffs being restored while the appeal process runs its course. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan said while the legal process unfolds, businesses and markets are left navigating a more complex and uncertain global trade landscape. "Investors increasingly recognise that markets are now entering a more prolonged period of uncertainty. "Sentiment has turned more defensive as capital allocators reassess both external developments and domestic dynamics," he told Bernama. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said moving forward, market participants will closely monitor the legal trajectory of US tariff policies, which may influence broader market sentiment. At the close, the ringgit traded lower against a basket of major currencies. It weakened versus the Japanese yen to 2.9531/9585 from Thursday's close of 2.9188/9249, slipped vis-à-vis the euro to 4.8169/8254 from 4.7803/7899 yesterday and depreciated against the British pound to 5.7284/7385 from 5.7091/7205 previously. The local note also fell against its ASEAN peers. It slipped versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2938/3002 from 3.2853/2921 on Thursday and dropped against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.4/261.1 from 259.9/260.5 previously. The ringgit also inched down against the Thai baht to 12.9507/9790 from 12.9321/9647 yesterday and slid vis-à-vis the Philippine peso to 7.62/7.64 from 7.60/7.62. - Bernama
