BD hosts Healthcare Summit in Riyadh in line with Vision 2030
The Saudi entity of BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), a leading global medical technology company, successfully hosted the BD Healthcare Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, under the theme 'Embracing a Value Driven Future with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030'.
The summit brought together regional and international healthcare experts to explore the future of healthcare in the Kingdom, focusing on data and trends in digital transformation, value-based healthcare, patient safety, and the efficiency of workflows and healthcare workforce well-being.
Held at the Crowne Plaza in Riyadh, the event commenced with opening remarks from Omar Malabarey, Country General Manager, BD Saudi Arabia, who welcomed attendees and set the stage for discussions, and thought-provoking conversations on the evolving healthcare landscape, aligning with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 goals of enhancing healthcare efficiency, sustainability, and digitalisation.
Key speakers included Dr. Justus Wolff, Technical University of Munich, School of Life Sciences who highlighted the economic impact of AI in healthcare. Dr. Abdulelah Al Hawsawi, Founding (Former) Director General of the Saudi Patient Safety Centre (SPSC), and Patient Safety Expert discussed the Global Landscape of Medical Device Safety and Its Impact on Patient Safety in Saudi Arabia. Dr. Mohammed Al Ghamdi, President of the Saudi Nurses Association explored Saudi Arabia's position as a global destination in the professional nursing journey.
The summit also tackled the increasing role of AI, digital transformation, and automation in healthcare. Dr. Abdulgader Almoeen, Senior Advisor at the Health Sector Transformation Program (HSTP) provided an in-depth analysis of Healthcare Transformation & Vision 2030: AI, Digitalisation & Automation, while Dr. Haitham Badr, Director of Quality at the Security Forces Hospital (SFH), Riyadh discussed how leveraging analytics can improve quality healthcare and patient safety.
A dedicated session on workforce empowerment featured Ms. Mawahib Samater, Executive Director of Nursing Administration, Armed Forces Medical Services, Ministry of Defence, who emphasised the importance of Investing in Our Most Valuable Assets: Empowering Nursing Excellence.
The summit concluded with Maher Elhassan, Vice President and General Manager, Middle East, North Africa, and Türkiye (MENAT) at BD, presenting BD Signature Programmes, which are designed to promote sustainable, high-quality healthcare while safeguarding patient and healthcare worker safety. He said, 'the BD Healthcare Summit in Riyadh served as a powerful platform for knowledge exchange, fostering discussions that will help shape the future of healthcare in Saudi Arabia. Monitoring health from start to finish Dr Essam Al Zarouni, a member of the committee, confirmed that health monitoring begins before pilgrims leave the UAE and continues after their arrival in Saudi Arabia. This includes conducting medical examinations, administering preventive vaccinations, and offering health guidance to ensure that pilgrims perform their rituals safely. Emergency and hospital care Al Zarouni noted that in cases where a pilgrim's condition requires advanced care, they are promptly transferred to specialized hospitals in coordination with Saudi authorities. Even after the transfer, the committee's medical team continues to follow up on the patient's condition. UAE pilgrims' medical procedures enter second phase
First phase focused on pre-departure preparation The office clarified that the first phase was implemented within the UAE and involved close coordination with expedition doctors. These doctors compiled detailed lists categorising pilgrims by medical conditions—such as chronic illnesses, pregnancy, disability, and old age. The phase also required doctors to conduct educational workshops tailored to each group, supported by updated medical reports, verification of medications, and vaccination status. Second phase begins with on-ground monitoring With the launch of the second phase, the Hajj Affairs Office's medical committee is now actively monitoring medical cases upon arrival in Saudi Arabia. This includes verifying the implementation of prescribed medical protocols with campaign doctors before the pilgrims begin the Hajj rituals. Coordination with Saudi authorities for medical support As pilgrims begin their movements toward Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah, the UAE medical committee is coordinating with relevant Saudi authorities to leverage the available medical facilities and services provided by the Kingdom. Upcoming third phase: On-site medical services The third phase, which starts once pilgrims reach the holy sites, includes establishing specialized clinics for men and women in Mina, deploying mobile medical teams to serve between tents and campaigns, activating medical hotlines to assist pilgrims and campaign doctors with urgent inquiries, and ensuring field inspection teams uphold and monitor the application of all health and safety standards across pilgrim groups. This structured, phased approach aims to ensure the health and well-being of UAE pilgrims throughout their Hajj journey.
