Farmers urged to stay vigilant against spurious seeds, fertilisers
Dharwad: The agriculture department has stated that there is no shortage of fertilisers and cautioned farmers against buying spurious seeds and fertilisers. Joint director of agriculture Manjunath Antaravalli said there are chances of some companies selling spurious seeds and fertilisers which result in crop damage. "The farmers should exercise caution while purchasing seeds and fertiliser. Purchase from govt facilities or those having ISO certificate," he said. "Vigilance teams have been formed to pay surprise visits to the private seeds and fertiliser shops to check the quality of seeds and contain black marketing. The trade licence will be seized if any shop cheats the farmers," he warned. Dharwad district is going for early sowing as the region received good pre-monsoon showers in the last week of May. According to agriculture department officials, sowing has already commenced in several parts as the rains have receded. Green gram is the most preferred short-term crop. Over one lakh hectare land is targeted for green gram kharif sowing. Manjunath Antaravalli said the monsoon rains across Dharwad district have been promising. The region has received 221.4mm of rainfall, significantly higher than the usual average of 113.3mm. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Farmers have intensified agricultural activities, and the necessary seeds and fertilisers are being supplied. As of now, through 31 distribution centres, a total of 3,679.3 quintals of seeds have been distributed under subsidy and the available stock is 4,751.7 quintals. The total requirement of fertilisers for monsoon crops in the district is 49,471.1 metric tonnes, out of which 37,476.1 metric tonnes have already been supplied. Till now, 19,567.8 metric tonnes have been sold, and 17,908.2 metric tonnes remain in stock, according to the JD. Farmers often traditionally rely on urea and DAP, which provide only nitrogen and phosphorus. However, to increase drought resistance and disease immunity in crops and improve grain weight, potash is also essential, which is often lacking. Several fertilisers containing balanced compositions of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potash are available in the market and can be used as per recommendations. He emphasised that farmers should use fertilisers in the recommended 4:2:1 ratio of nitrogen: phosphorus: potash. The demand for DAP fertiliser in the district stood at 5,078 metric tonnes, while 5,704 metric tonnes have already been supplied. An additional 2,000 metric tonnes will be supplied within the next three days. Furthermore, there is a stock of 8,000 metric tonnes of complex fertilisers available in the district.
