Middle East crisis: US shuts Jerusalem embassy; no evacuation for Americans announced
US Embassy in Jerusalem
The United States will shut its embassy in
Jerusalem
from Wednesday through Friday as the conflict between Israel and Iran intensifies, the State Department announced on Tuesday.
'Given the security situation and in compliance with Israel Home Front Command guidance, the US Embassy in Jerusalem will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday, June 18) through Friday (June 20).
This includes the Consular Sections in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv,' the department said in a statement posted on X.

The decision comes as military tensions continue to escalate between Iran and Israel, now in their sixth day of open conflict. Loud explosions were heard in both Jerusalem and Tel Aviv as missiles flew overhead, with video footage showing several strikes in residential areas.
On Monday, minor damage was reported at the US Embassy's Tel Aviv branch after missile impacts nearby, according to the US Ambassador to Israel.
'Some minor damage from concussions of Iranian missile hits near embassy branch in Tel Aviv but no injuries to US personnel,' the ambassador confirmed. Windows of nearby homes and hotels were shattered by the blast's shockwaves.
No evacuation has been announced for American citizens in the region. However, embassy officials said, 'all US government employees and their family members [must] continue to shelter in place in and near their residences until further notice.'
The closures come amid growing speculation about a potential American military response. US President
Donald Trump
convened a meeting with his National Security Council on Tuesday after publicly calling for Iran's 'unconditional surrender.' He also warned that the US could assassinate Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei if it chose to.
A Reuters report revealed that Trump had recently vetoed an Israeli plan to carry out such an assassination. 'Have the Iranians killed an American yet? No. Until they do we're not even talking about going after the political leadership,' a senior US official was quoted as saying.
Despite the ongoing crisis, the US has yet to make any formal announcement about evacuating citizens or engaging in direct military retaliation.

Israel low on defence missiles, interceptors cost $285 million-a-night: Report
Despite claiming major successes against Iran's military infrastructure, Israel is rapidly depleting its supply of long-range missile interceptors, raising alarm over the sustainability of its defence systems, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a US official familiar with allied intelligence report came amid relentless missile exchanges between Israel and Iran. Since Israel launched Operation Rising Lion last Friday, Iranian forces have fired roughly 400 ballistic missiles — part of an estimated arsenal of 2,000 capable of reaching Israeli territory. Israeli defences, particularly the Arrow system designed to intercept high-altitude ballistic missiles, have managed to neutralise most incoming projectiles, but not without significant in Tel Aviv told WSJ that one-third of Iran's missile launchers have been destroyed and claim to have achieved air superiority over Iranian skies. Still, intelligence sources warned that over half of Iran's missile inventory remains intact, with a portion likely concealed in underground facilities. The cost of maintaining Israel's layered missile defence — comprising the Iron Dome, David's Sling, the Arrow system, and US-supplied Patriots and THAAD batteries — is becoming a critical concern. Israeli financial daily The Marker estimated that nightly missile defence operations are costing up to 1 billion shekels ($285 million). The Arrow system alone fires interceptors priced at $3 million Iranian missile barrages continuing almost daily, Israeli air defence stockpiles are now under severe pressure. Without rapid resupply from the United States or direct intervention, Israel can maintain its missile defence for 10 or 12 more days if Iran maintains a steady tempo of attacks, a source briefed on US and Israeli intelligence told WSJ. "The system is already overwhelmed. Soon, they may have to choose which missiles to intercept," the source strain is beginning to show. On Friday night, Iranian missiles evaded Israel's defences and struck near the IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv. On Sunday, a direct hit forced the shutdown of a major oil refinery near Haifa. And on Tuesday morning, verified social media videos captured multiple Iranian missile impacts close to Israel's intelligence compound north of Tel far, the Israeli government has confirmed 24 deaths and over 600 injuries since the latest escalation Israel's offensive strikes have reportedly dealt heavy blows to Iran's capabilities, including military bases, oil infrastructure, and nuclear-linked sites, the broader conflict now hinges on whether Israel can continue defending its skies without exhausting its most-advanced and expensive missile InMust Watch

Gaza rescuers say 30 killed by Israel fire
AP Image GAZA CITY: Gaza's civil defence agency said 30 people were killed by Israeli fire in the Palestinian territory on Wednesday, including 11 who were seeking aid. The war sparked by Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel has ravaged the Gaza Strip, with severe shortages of food, fuel and clean water. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that 11 people were killed and more than 100 wounded "after the occupation forces opened fire and launched several shells... at thousands of citizens" who had gathered to queue for food in central Gaza. In early March, Israel imposed a total aid blockade on Gaza amid deadlock in truce negotiations, only partially easing restrictions in late May. Since then, chaotic scenes and a string of deadly shootings have occurred near areas where Palestinians have gathered in hope of receiving aid. The civil defence agency said another 19 people were killed in three Israeli strikes on Wednesday, which it said targeted houses and a tent for displaced people. When asked for comment by AFP, the Israeli military said it was "looking into" the reports. Israeli restrictions on media in the Gaza Strip and difficulties in accessing some areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify the tolls and details provided by the civil defence agency. The UN humanitarian office OCHA said on Monday that its partners "continue to warn of the risk of famine in Gaza, amid catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity". The civil defence agency reported that at least 53 people were killed on Tuesday, as they gathered near an aid centre in the southern city of Khan Yunis hoping to receive flour. After Israel eased its blockade, the US- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) began distributing aid in late May, but its operations have been marred by chaotic scenes and dozens of deaths. In a statement on Tuesday, the organisation said that "to date, not a single incident has occurred at or in the surrounding vicinity of GHF sites nor has an incident occurred during our operating hours". UN agencies and major aid groups have refused to cooperate with the foundation over concerns it was designed to cater to Israeli military objectives. The Hamas attack which triggered the war resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, according to Israeli official figures. The Gaza health ministry said on Tuesday that 5,194 people have been killed since Israel resumed major operations in the territory on March 18, ending a two-month truce. The overall death toll in Gaza since the war broke out has reached 55,493 people, according to the health ministry.

Explosions rocked both Tel Aviv and Iranian cities like Tehran and Karaj after back-to-back missile barrages and retaliatory airstrikes. Meanwhile, Trump abruptly left the G7 summit and held a high-level security meeting, fueling speculation that the U.S. may soon join Israeli strikes. Additional American fighter aircraft have been deployed to the region.
