As many as 10 cases of COVID-19 have been detected in Maharashtra's Thane city over the last three days, with the civic administration urging hospitals to stay vigilant, officials said on Saturday. According to a release issued by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), the affected patients showed mild symptoms and are undergoing treatment at home.The civic body has urged people not to panic and follow precautionary measures.TMC Commissioner Saurabh Rao has instructed the civic health department and hospitals to remain vigilant and alert for examination and treatment of COVID-19 patients , the release stated.The civic body held a high-level review meeting on Friday to assess the situation and readiness of the health system.During the meeting, chief medical officer Dr Chetna Nitil informed that all patients were stable and recovering at home."A sufficient stock of medicines has been maintained at all health centres, and COVID-19 testing kits are readily available," the release quoted her as saying.The civic body has also made arrangements for potential hospital admissions if needed."A dedicated 19-bed ward has been set up at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa for COVID-19 patients," hospital superintendent Dr Aniruddha Malgaonkar said.He said the hospital is also equipped with RT-PCR testing facilities.The civic body has assured that the situation is under control and appealed to the public not to panic."The health machinery is fully prepared, and constant monitoring is underway," the TMC release stated.

The experts have urged the public to remain vigilant but stressed that there is 'no need to panic'. Ahmedabad remains a hotspot in this wave, recording 50 new cases in a single day. The city also reported its second consecutive Covid-related fatality on Monday — an 18-year-old pregnant woman from Vinzol succumbed during treatment. Previously, a 47-year-old woman died at L G Hospital in the city. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation and urge residents to adhere to precautionary measures to curb further transmission. In response to the recent surge in Covid-19 cases, the Gujarat government has stepped up its preparedness across districts. Health department officials have been instructed to increase surveillance and testing, particularly in urban hotspots like Ahmedabad. Isolation protocols have been reinforced, and hospitals have been asked to keep dedicated Covid-19 beds and oxygen supplies ready. The state has also resumed daily health briefings to monitor the spread of infections closely. District health officers have been directed to trace contacts of positive patients and ensure home-isolated individuals are regularly followed up by health workers. Awareness campaigns are being relaunched in both urban and rural areas to remind citizens about hygiene, masking in crowded places, and the importance of early medical intervention. Additionally, authorities are reviewing vaccination records and encouraging eligible individuals to get booster doses where applicable.

According to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) data, India's active Covid-19 cases on Tuesday crossed the 4,000 mark within just three days of breaching the 3,000 mark, with most infections reported in Kerala, Maharashtra and Gujarat in the last 24 hours. West Bengal reported its first COVID-related death in 2025 on Tuesday. In Kolkata, a 43-year-old woman from Alipore, who had been on ventilator support at a private hospital for a week, succumbed to the virus. According to hospital sources, she was also suffering from Acute Coronary Syndrome, septic shock, and acute kidney injury. Doctors urge mask use as amid spike in Covid-19 cases
Mumbai: As Maharashtra reports a sharp spike in Covid-19 cases, health experts are urging people to start using face masks again in high-risk settings. Though most current infections are clinically mild, senior citizens and those with pre-existing ailments remain vulnerable, and three-layer or N95 masks can be life-saving in such contexts, say doctors. According to data from the state health department, confirmed Covid-19 cases climbed from 106 on May 20 and to 959 on June 3. On June 3 alone, Maharashtra reported 86 new cases, including 26 from Mumbai. Dr Vimal Pahuja, consultant physician (internal medicine) at Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital in Powai, emphasised the continued need for personal protection. 'We're seeing more incidental Covid-19 cases with mild symptoms like low-grade fever or throat irritation, but high-risk individuals—those with diabetes, cardiac illness, or asthma—should not take chances,' he said. 'Wearing a mask in closed or poorly ventilated areas, including lifts, hospitals, clinics, and on public transport, is a low-effort, high-impact intervention. It's not about fear, it's about smart protection.' Dr Gautam Bhansali, senior consultant physician at Bombay Hospital, also stressed on the critical role of masks. 'We're recording 2–3 Covid-19 cases a day, with many testing positive during admission for unrelated procedures. Most don't need hospitalisation, but vulnerable people do fall sick more seriously,' Dr Bhansali said. 'A simple three-layer or N95 mask can significantly reduce transmission – especially in high-density places like OPDs, crowded clinics, or homes where elderly or immunocompromised people live, masks can be life-saving.' Though most current infections are clinically mild, Maharashtra has reported 14 Covid-related deaths since January. Medical records show they all involved comorbid patients with underlying conditions like interstitial lung disease, diabetic ketoacidosis, cerebrovascular events, and severe respiratory problems with cardiac complications. Mumbai remains the epicentre, accounting for 510 of the 959 cases reported from across the state between May 20 and June 3. Experts warn that the ongoing monsoon may lead to an uptick in respiratory infections and diagnostic confusion with illnesses like influenza or dengue. Maharashtra minister Ashish Shelar recently chaired a review meeting to assess the Covid-19 situation in Mumbai and review the city's healthcare preparedness and response mechanisms. An official who attended the meeting said the minister stressed on the importance of preventive measures for vulnerable groups, saying that those with diabetes, hypertension and other comorbidities must resume wearing masks and consider re-vaccination, if eligible. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the state health department have stepped up surveillance and genome sequencing, and instructed health facilities to replenish antiviral drugs, oxygen cylinders, and PPE kits in view of the spike in cases. Meanwhile, doctors stress that basic, consistent measures like mask-wearing and early testing can prevent another wave from spiralling. 'The virus may not be as lethal now, but it still seeks the vulnerable,' Dr Bhansali said. 'Let's not give it that chance.'
