Comedian's show cancelled after he made joke about Liverpool parade crash
A comedian has had upcoming stand-up gigs cancelled after making an 'embarrassing' attempt at a joke about the Liverpool Premier League victory parade crash that injured 65 people.
More than 50 people, including children, were hospitalised when a vehicle ploughed into a crowd of jubilant supporters celebrating Liverpool 's triumph on Monday evening.
But Andrew Lawrence said he would "drive through crowds of people" to get out of the city, in a post that has been met with a furious response on X.
The Hillsborough Survivors Support Alliance CIC, who work to provide mental health support to victims of the 1989 disaster, replied: 'A comedian really? You're an embarrassment to the profession.'
Actor Barry Sloane, who is from the city and will star in HBO's House of Dragons, said: 'You absolute disgrace.'
Mr Lawrence, who is on a nationwide tour, then posted that an upcoming gig in Southend had been cancelled.
He said: 'This venue lost their courage after being bombarded with abuse and threats of violence from online trolls. Understandable, but disappointing.
'I will reschedule for later in the year at a different venue Southend, sorry for the inconvenience, have a great day.'
Caddies, the venue which doubles as a mini-golf course, added: 'We do not condone or support the comment that has been made online, and we send everyone impacted by the tragic events in Liverpool our support and prayers.'
It is not the first time the comic has been 'cancelled'. He was widely criticised for comments made about the penalty takers in the aftermath of England's shootout defeat in the 2020 Euros, and he was also criticised after a poor-taste joke about Marcus Rashford's anti-poverty campaign.
His then agents RBM Comedy said they no longer represented Mr Lawrence after the post.
A 53-year-old man from West Derby in Liverpool is continuing to be questioned on Wednesday morning after being arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving and drug-driving.
Liverpool FC icons Kenny Dalglish and Jurgen Klopp led tributes to the victims caught up in the parade day terror.
In a message of support to fans, Sir Kenny, who won titles as a player and manager, said the club anthem, You'll Never Walk Alone, 'has never felt more appropriate'.
In a statement, he said: 'Shocked, horrified and deeply saddened about what happened at the end of the parade. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone and their families who have been impacted.
'Our anthem has never felt more appropriate, You'll Never Walk Alone. Your Liverpool family are behind you.'
Klopp, who won the title in 2020, flew in from Germany on Monday to show his support for his former club.
He said on social media: 'My family and I are shocked and devastated. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those injured and affected. You'll Never Walk Alone.'

Historic Arnos Vale Cemetery damaged by vandals
Members of the public are being asked to "remain vigilant" and report suspicious activity after a historic graveyard was destroyed by vandals. Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust in Bristol said a total of seven graves were damaged, with Victorian marble headstones toppled over and stonework smashed. The boiler room and crypt of the Anglican Chapel, a Grade II*-listed building, were also broken into and sustained significant damage in the trust said it may have to consider adding more security measures to the site including overnight staff and additional CCTV. The graves in Arnos Vale Cemetery date back to 1839, with the first burial recorded in July of that cemetery was designed to provide a more spacious and sanitary burial ground, compared to the overcrowded parish graveyards of the a statement, the trust said: "This vandalism has understandably caused concern to everyone that cherishes Arnos Vale Cemetery as a place of remembrance, reflection, and heritage."Acts of vandalism place additional pressure on limited resources, and divert funds away from day-to-day maintenance and conservation work across the cemetery and its listed buildings."As a registered charity, the team relies on public support and donations to care for the historic site. The cemetery remains open 24 hours a day, serving as a vital pedestrian route and green space for local people. The charity said it remains "committed to maintaining this open access", but repeated incidents may lead to the trustees "reviewing these arrangements".CEO Ann Fiddler said: "We are grateful for the continued support and ask everyone to remain vigilant and report any signs of new damage to the graves or the site."Together we can ensure the protection and conservation of this unique place for generations to come."Your eyes and support can make a real difference in protecting this special place."

ULRIKA Jonsson has marked one year since going sober after making an emotional confession about quitting booze. The 57-year-old previously told how she would "black out and not recall the night" while drinking. 3 3 3 Now TV presenter Ulrika has been sober for a year and took to Instagram to share before and after photos. One was captioned "sober" while the other was marked "drunk". Ulrika continued: "Today I'm marking 1yr of sobriety. "No fanfare, no medal, no trophy. The journey goes on. "A huge thanks to all those beautiful people who have supported me; understood me; scooped me up and handled me tenderly and without judgement. "Who nudged me in the right direction; who made me laugh and helped me shed the crippling shame." Ulrika added: "My sobriety will continue to be my priority. "Turns out it IS possible to teach old dogs new trick." Last year Ulrika confessed she made the decision to quit booze after a frank conversation with a friend. She said: "One Saturday morning my best friend, who I love and cherish, called me and basically told me we had spoken the night before and she hadn't understood a word I had said. "She told me I needed help. I knew it came from a place of love. 'The sense of shame would have been enough to make me want a drink. But not on that occasion. 'Instead, I sobbed like a child who desperately needed someone to hold her. I was full of despair."
