British players make history on magical Monday at Wimbledon
Katie Boulter, Sonay Kartal and Arthur Fery were the stars of the show on a record-breaking opening day for the large British cohort at Wimbledon.
The trio were among seven home players to record victories at the All England Club, the best tally on any day of the championships in the open era.
The best was saved for last as Boulter took out ninth seed Paula Badosa 6-2 3-6 6-4 on Centre Court, with Britain's top two women both through after Emma Raducanu comfortably defeated compatriot Mimi Xu.
British number three Kartal and wild card Fery saw off the respective women's and men's 20th seeds, with the former ousting Jelena Ostapenko 7-5 2-6 6-2 and the latter defeating Alexei Popyrin 6-4 6-1 4-6 6-4.
For Fery, it is by a long distance the biggest victory of his life, with the 22-year-old only once having beaten a top-100 player before.
Fery, whose French father Loic owns Lorient football club, has seen his ranking drop outside the top 400 but he made a mockery of that with a treasured first Wimbledon victory.
Fery, who lives down the road, lost to Daniil Medvedev on his debut two years ago and then heartbreakingly in five sets against Daniel Altmaier last summer.
'I think I used the experience from last year to get over the line today,' he said. 'Last year was really tough to lose in that manner. So definitely very proud and very special moment today to win here.'
Kartal reached the third round as a qualifier 12 months ago but her hopes of another good run appeared to have been dealt a blow when she drew seasoned grass-court campaigner Ostapenko in round one.
The Latvian is a former semi-finalist and beat Kartal in Eastbourne last week but, after recovering from 5-2 down in the opening set and saving three set points, the 23-year-old also proved the stronger in the decider.
It is Kartal's third best win by ranking of her career and her best at a grand slam.
She described the match as one of the toughest she had ever played, saying: 'Typically I struggle against the big hitters. So to be able to do that, get the win in front of the home crowd, I'm super proud of that one.
'I feel confident. I feel like this is the best I've ever played on grass. It's the most confident I've also got in my game, as well. I think I'm in a pretty good spot for round two.'
Kartal's win was swiftly followed by another notable British success, this time for debutant Oliver Tarvet, who made it four victories in a row after coming through qualifying with a 6-4 6-4 6-4 win over Swiss Leandro Riedi to earn a crack at Carlos Alcaraz.
Former British number one Cameron Norrie claimed his first win on grass this year with a narrow 6-3 3-6 6-4 7-6 (3) victory over Spanish veteran Roberto Bautista Agut.
Norrie rediscovered his form on clay after almost dropping out of the top 100 and will next take on 12th seed Frances Tiafoe.
'I wanted to enjoy like a kid playing Wimbledon again,' said Norrie. 'I was not thinking I was British number one or British number two. I was there to play and enjoy the match.
'I've been playing well, feeling the ball good. It was time to just compete. He's one of the toughest guys to compete against, so I really had to earn the win today and earn the competitive certificate against him.'
The final British winner was Billy Harris, who took advantage of a change of opponent to claim a comprehensive 6-3 6-2 6-4 victory over lucky loser Dusan Lajovic for his first grand slam success.
The world number 151 had been due to play former semi-finalist Hubert Hurkacz before he withdrew.
Seven home players suffered first-round losses, with British number two Jacob Fearnley the major disappointment after going down in straight sets to hot Brazilian prospect Joao Fonseca.
Harriet Dart, debutant Oliver Crawford, former boys' champion Henry Searle and 16-year-olds Hannah Klugman and Mika Stojsavljevic also exited the tournament.

Nick Kyrgios claims Emma Raducanu is in a Wimbledon love triangle with two stars
Emma's love life has become the talk of WImbledon and now Nick Kyrgios couldn't resist stirring the pot Nick Kyrgios has mischievously claimed Emma Raducanu is in the middle of a 'love triangle' with fellow tennis stars Carlos Alcaraz and Jack Draper. The Aussie tennis ace made the bold comment with a grin while speaking on talkSPORT, where he's now working after being dropped by the BBC. Emma and Carlos have been the subject of light-hearted romance rumours recently, after the pair were spotted together multiple times from practice courts at Wimbledon to courtside support at the HSBC Championships. The two 22-year-olds, who are set to play mixed doubles together at the US Open, also recently joined forces as brand ambassadors for Evian but when asked about the buzz around their friendship, Emma laughed it off and made it clear there's no romance involved. 'I'm really happy to be playing with him… we're just good friends,' she said. That didn't stop Kyrgios from stirring the pot this week, cheekily telling listeners: 'I don't know, I think it's a love triangle! Draper, Alcaraz, Raducanu. They're fighting over Raducanu I think, I'm not sure.' Referring to Emma's smiley Wimbledon appearances, he added: 'I think the outside [she looks happy]. I don't know who's making her happy. The tennis world loves a love story, they love to try and put two [players] together. But Emma is number one British female player at the moment, she's doing fairly well. 'Obviously, winning a grand slam at 19 is never easy, it comes with a lot of expectations from the outside world. But, you know, as long as she's happy." Earlier this week, Emma kicked off her Wimbledon 2025 campaign with a solid 6-3 6-3 win over fellow Brit Mimi Xu. She's now set to face reigning 2023 champion Marketa Vondrousova in the next round. Meanwhile, Jack Draper begins his tournament against Sebastian Baez, and Emma is already off the mark after a tough battle with Fabio Fognini. During a pre-Wimbledon press conference, Emma once again dismissed the swirling romance rumours with a laugh. Speaking about her upcoming doubles pairing with Alcaraz, she said: 'No, it was fun yesterday. We were both on court with (water brand) Evian.' 'Yeah, I'm really happy obviously to be playing with him. Yeah, we had a good time yesterday.' READ MORE: Emma Raducanu addresses Carlos Alcaraz romance rumours with four-word answer When the inevitable question about romance came up, she smiled and replied: 'We're just good friends.' The moderator swiftly wrapped up the topic, with Emma joking: 'Way to wrap up!' Speaking fondly about their four-year friendship, she explained: 'I've known him for years and actually in Wimbledon 2021, it was kind of the first time I started getting to know him… I remember he beat Stef [Tsitsipas] in the third round and it was like a big win, his breakout kind of win on a big stage… we were staying in touch for the whole time and yeah, it's nice.' She added: 'We have a good relationship still. He's obviously overtaken me a lot, but it's nice that we have that from a while ago. 'I think for all of us, we really kind of value those connections that we had from when we were young… when you become a bit more known or a bit more successful, you just find yourself reverting back to people you knew from a young age because you're like, that's a real genuine connection.' While the so-called 'love triangle' remains nothing more than playful tennis gossip, it's safe to say Nickhas successfully stirred the Wimbledon pot.

Carlos Alcaraz conversation with opponent overheard at end of Wimbledon classic
Carlos Alcaraz edged a five-set thriller to beat Fabio Fognini in the first round of the men's singles at Wimbledon, as the Spaniard began his title defence with a classic on Centre Court Defending Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz sent a classy message to opponent Fabio Fognini after the pair's epic five-set match on Monday. Alcaraz, 22, narrowly beat 38-year-old Fognini on Centre Court as the Italian put up a tremendous fight against the 2025 favourite, who's aiming to make it three Wimbledon men's singles titles in a row. Fognini, a nine-time ATP singles champion, made it clear ahead of his visit to the All England Club that this is his final season. And the veteran went out with his head held high, winning the second and fourth sets against Alcaraz, who had some kind words for him. The Spaniard was spotted talking to Fognini after the end of their thrilling contest and in his press post-match conference, Alcaraz was asked to reveal what was said. "I just told him that I have big respect to him," the two-time Wimbledon champion replied. "He's the best. Yeah, I have a big respect to him. Everything that he has done in his career, what he has done today. I love watching him play. "I'm just glad to have shared the court once again with him, that I have shared the locker rooms, the tournament with him. Just amazing. Just have big respect to him." On X, formerly Twitter, Alcaraz added: "38 years old? Congratulations on the incredible match! It was an honor to share this battle at Wimbledon with you!" The Spanish superstar always anticipated a difficult match, telling reporters: "I knew at the beginning that it was going to be really difficult playing against Fabio. Doesn't matter, I mean, it's his last year, his last tournaments. "The talent that Fabio has is immense. In every match he can show his best tennis. I think today he has shown one of his best tennis. But yes, really proud about getting through and give myself another chance to be better in the next round." Will Carlos Alcaraz make it three in a row at Wimbledon? Give us your prediction in the comments section. Fognini reciprocated Alcaraz's kind words, saying: "At the moment I think he's probably the best player in the world. He played against Jannik [Sinner] one month ago amazing final. So all the respect for him, yeah." Up next for Alcaraz is British qualifier Oliver Tarvet. The second-round match will be played on Wednesday, with the time and court yet to be confirmed. Tarvet, 21, is ranked 733rd in the world and earned his place in the second round by beating Switzerland's Leandro Riedi 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 on Monday. The Brit is relishing the chance to face Alcaraz and commented: "I'm quietly confident I can win against anyone. Alcaraz isn't an exception to that. "He's done an incredible amount in the tennis world. He's a difficult guy not to respect. I will just go out there and try and treat it like another match. At the end of the day, for me, I try and play the ball, not the player."

Shes Perfect just that in workout, with Newmarket decision pending
First past the post in the French 1000 Guineas before being demoted by the ParisLongchamp stewards, she failed failed to see out the 10-furlong trip in the Prix de Diane. Fellowes would love a confidence-boosting win, with the Group Three Valiant Stakes at Ascot later in the month an alternative, but he also feels Newmarket will suit the daughter of Sioux Nation. 'The gallop went really well and I was very, very happy. She worked over seven furlongs, it was beautiful ground and I was very grateful to those at the July course for letting us do it,' said Fellowes. 'She looked great after it and we'll see how she comes out of it. I'll probably make a decision in the next few days or so. 'It's a funny one, if it was the Valiant at Newmarket and the Group One at Ascot it would be a very easy decision because I like the idea of running at Newmarket – but I also like the idea of dropping down in grade and giving her a confidence boost. I just think Newmarket will suit her better than Ascot. 'We'll look at potentially what is going to turn up and we'll go from there.'
