Simbu Gets Emotional At Thug Life Event, Opens Up About Controversies

News1825-05-2025

The actor, who has faced many controversies, began his speech by expressing his thanks to Madras Talkies, Suhasini Mani Ratnam, and Raaj Kamal International's Mahendran. He went on to praise his co-stars and concluded with heartfelt words for AR Rahman, Mani Ratnam, and Kamal Haasan.
Thanking Rahman, Simbu said, 'Sir, I have troubled you from my childhood. I still do. When my Beep song came out, everyone knew that it was a harrowing time. At that time, he had to travel elsewhere. But, he cancelled it and worked on a song. He released Thalli Pogathey song (from Simbu's 'Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada). You've done a lot for me."
The Chekka Chivantha Vaanam star got emotional as he spoke about his early days in music. He fondly recalled how A.R. Rahman was the first to give him a chance to sing outside of his father T. Rajendar's projects. 'Apart from my father, it was Rahman sir who called me to sing. He gave me my first break as a singer. Since then, I've sung over 150 songs in multiple languages," STR shared.
Sharing an anecdote about Mani Ratnam, Simbu said, 'He took a film titled Anjali and it starred children. A Telugu child artist played the lead. I started crying after watching the film. I felt sad that I wasn't a part of the film despite being a child artiste here. At that time, I thought he wouldn't call me ever. When I grew up, I only did mass masala films. There was a time when there were talks about [producers] giving me a red card. Many producers were sceptical of approaching me. At that time, I received a call from Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies. I didn't believe it at first. When I met him, I asked him if it was truly him who called me for a film. At a time when everyone was scared to work with me, he took that chance. I will never forget that."
He further added, 'But I couldn't do PS [Ponniyin Selvan]. Even when he brought 'Thug Life' to me, I couldn't say yes because I was growing my hair. Later when it was once again offered to me and I knew it had Kamal Haasan sir, I did it. Mani sir is like my godfather and guru too. I am thankful to him for giving me this role."
Recalling Kamal Haasan's statement about how he calls himself a student of cinema, he said, 'We keep saying we have so much to learn from him. But, he keeps calling himself a student. Even if he was a student, we'd still continue to learn from him. There's a scene [in 'Thug Life'] which required me to imitate Kamal sir in front of him. When the scene was rolling, I just mumbled. Mani sir noticed it, called it cut and asked me to do it properly. He even told Kamal sir about it. Later, Kamal sir came up to me, and encouraged me to talk like him. It will be a great moment in theatre."
Simbu continued, 'There's a shot where Kamal sir and I hold each other's throat. I went for multiple takes as I couldn't hold his throat thinking I might hurt him. Sorry Kamal sir, it's because of Mani sir. I could learn a lot from Kamal sir."
Simbu then got emotional while talking about his parents that. 'I'd like to thank my father, T Rajendar, and mother, Usha Rajendar. I thank them for teaching me acting right from my childhood. I used to feel sad seeing other children leading a normal life going to school. I used to think why was my father doing this to me? 40 years later, I got an opportunity to act with Kamal Haasan sir. I thank my parents for giving me this life," he remarked.
Quoting the much-talked-about line from Thug Life — 'Inimel inga naan dan Rangaraya Sakthivel (I am Rangaraya Sakthivel from now on)" — STR addressed the rumours about him stepping into Kamal Haasan's shoes. He clarified that he isn't replacing anyone, but simply carving out his own path as Rangaraya Sakthivel in the film.

'There's a lot of chatter that I will take his place especially after the trailer released. There's a film called 'Thevar Magan' starring Sivaji Ganesan and Kamal Haasan. Sivaji sir was a great man and since Kamal sir acted in it, he cannot replace Sivaji. His [Sivaji] place is not replaceable. Similarly, Kamal Haasan has created his place after so many sacrifices and hard work. I cannot take his place, I can work hard and make him and Mani Ratnam proud. Kamal Haasan sir recently said that he would lend his shoulder to the next generation to uplift him. Sir, I see you as a guiding light for all future endeavours," he said.
Simbu concluded saying, 'My fans, I've promised you that I will make you proud. 'Thug Life' is a beginning in that direction. I will make sure that my films don't get delayed. Many ask me how I have loyal fans. I am thankful to have some good hearts who are also my fans."

The time loop love story - 'Bhool Chuk Maaf,' headlined by Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi, has completed two weeks at the box office. Despite the initial release delay and controversies, the movie was able to find its footing with the audience. However, now with Akshay Kumar, Ritesh Deshmukh, and Abhishek Bachchan's 'Housefull 5' taking charge at the box office, 'Bhool Chuk Maaf' is losing its grip. According to Sacnilk, the comedy film opened its third week with a major dip, collecting only Rs 47 lakhs on Friday. 'Bhool Chuk Maaf' Box Office Update The opening week of 'Bhool Chuk Maaf' saw a solid business of Rs 44.1 crore. However, in the second week, with a dip of 48.59%, the movie was able to make only Rs 22.5 crore. On Friday, the movie entered its third week with Rs. 47 lakh. With a drop of 68.67%, it is by far the lowest the film has recorded. Currently, the film stands at a total of Rs. 67.07 crore. On Friday, Akshay Kumar's much-awaited comedy film 'Housefull 5' with two different endings made it to the theatres and collected Rs. 23 crore in the opening haul. On the other hand, in the South, Kamal Haasan's 'Thug Life' was released on June 5. ‘Thug Life' box office collections day 2: Kamal Haasan's film collects only Rs 7.50 cr: Faces steep drop

(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) After an impressive start, Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam 's highly anticipated film 'Thug Life' witnessed a sharp decline in its box office performance on the second day. According to early estimates reported by the Sacnilk website, the film earned Rs 7.50 crore (across all languages) in India on Day 2, a significant decline from its Rs 15.5 crore opening. This brings the total two-day India net collection to Rs 23 crore. The dip in collections raises questions about the film's ability to sustain its momentum over the weekend, especially in non-Tamil markets. Occupancy dips outside Tamil Nadu 'Thug Life's Tamil version maintained a moderate occupancy rate on Friday with an overall 31.41%. The film showed gradual improvement throughout the day in Tamil Nadu, particularly in Chennai, which recorded a 59% night show occupancy. However, other regions like Madurai and Coimbatore hovered around the 25-30% range. Thug Life | Song - Vinveli Nayaga (Lyrical) In contrast, the film struggled in the Hindi and Telugu belts. The Hindi version registered a meagre 6.48% overall occupancy on Friday, with evening and night shows failing to gain traction. The Telugu version fared slightly better with a 14.17% overall occupancy, but still reflected limited interest compared to expectations from a pan-Indian release. Star-studded cast yet to boost momentum Despite a powerhouse cast featuring Kamal Haasan, Trisha Krishnan, Silambarasan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, and Ali Fazal, the film's performance indicates it has not yet connected with a broader audience. With the weekend ahead, the makers will be hoping for a turnaround driven by word-of-mouth and fan support. However, unless there is a strong surge in occupancy across all language markets, 'Thug Life' risks falling short of its high expectations and production scale. What's next? The coming days will be crucial in determining whether the Mani Ratnam-Kamal Haasan collaboration can bounce back at the box office. Housefull 5 Box Office Collection day 1: Decent start for Akshay Kumar's film, crosses ₹13 crore on opening day

Housefull 5 Box Office Collection day 1: The much-awaited film, Housefull 5, starring Akshay Kumar and his gang released in cinema on Friday. Off to a decent start, the murder mystery has crossed ₹ 13 crore at the box office. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Housefull 5 has so far minted ₹ 13.81 crore. However, these are the real-time updates from morning and afternoon. The final figures will be out after 10 pm. If the film maintains similar momentum during the evening and night shows, its total earnings could potentially double by the end of the day. Housefull 5 had an overall 20.93% Occupancy on Friday in 2D format. The 3D format saw an occupancy of 10.76% on June 06, 2025. Cities like Mumbai, Delhi NCR and Ahmedabad had the highest occupancy with the highest number of screenings for the film in all formats. Following closely is Pune, Bengaluru and Surat on the list. Overall, the film has done better business than expected. Going by its advance sales booking, the film was set to premiere with ₹ ₹ 6.87 crore gross earnings (including the blocked seats). Housefull 5 is clashing with the Hindi version of Kamal Haasan's Thug Life which was released a day ahead of Housefull 6. Thug Life, however, has received an underwhelming response. On the other hand, both the films are also clashing with Maddock Films' Bhool Chuk Maaf, starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi. Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, ''HOUSEFULL 5' IS AKSHAY KUMAR'S WIDEST OVERSEAS RELEASE... The much-awaited #Housefull5 has released in… 85+ countries 1300+ locations 2000+ screens.' He also reviewed the film and called it 'Dhamaal'. "#OneWordReview… #Housefull5: DHAMAAL. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️½ The #Housefull franchise returns with a bang – this time, it's bigger, louder, and crazier... A paisa-vasool entertainer with madness, a thrilling climax, and mass-moments galore. #Housefull5Review. First things first: In a film like #Housefull5, logic takes a backseat... The key is to surrender yourself to the craziness and enjoy the rollercoaster ride. 'Director #TarunMansukhani infuses fresh energy into the franchise, while retaining the essence that fans have loved over the years... #HF5 continues the series' tradition of over-the-top humour, madcap storytelling, and visual extravaganza. The writing is peppered with witty one-liners, quirky twists, and cleverly staged gags... In short, #HF5 strikes the right balance between madness and masala,' his post read. Taran also mentioned what did not work in the film for him. He added, 'Minus points? A few jokes feel dated and forced. Some supporting characters are underutilized. The post-interval screenplay could've been tighter.'
