University facing staff strikes over hundreds of threatened job cuts

University staff are striking over hundreds of threatened job losses and compulsory redundancies.
University and College Union (UCU) members at the University of Dundee (UoD) will begin another five days of strikes starting on Monday 26 May, ending on Friday 30 May.
The strikes come in response to the university's decision to cut 700 jobs and are the latest in a string of industrial action at the university, with another 15 days of strikes having taken place in February and March.
Initially, following advice from the Scottish Government, the employer announced a reduced figure of 300 job loses via a voluntary redundancy scheme, but the union said on Monday morning the UoD is refusing to rule out compulsory redundancies.
The union also says the university is carrying out redundancy consultations in its Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science (LRCFS) and the Educational Assistive Technology Team (EduAT) departments.
The union said that members were shocked that staff were still facing compulsory redundancy in both the LRCFS and EduAT.
UCU added the EduAT team has proved integral in the education of disabled students in the UK and overseas.
The union said that Assistive Technology plays a vital role in enabling learners with additional educational needs to achieve their academic goals.
A spokesperson for the Dundee UCU branch said: 'The announcement at the end of April that, instead of up to 700 jobs being cut, the University is looking to lose 300 staff via a voluntary severance scheme was welcome.
'However, the threat of compulsory redundancies is still looming over staff once a voluntary severance scheme closes, and there are staff at the university that are currently facing redundancy in the Leverhulme centre and EduAT.
'We call on the employer to abide by the Scottish Government's call to rule out the use of compulsory redundancies, and to commit to making any savings through voluntary methods.
'The employer is pushing ahead with redundancies, and given that jobs are on the line our members felt they had no choice but to embark upon further industrial action.
'That's why members will be taking strike action for five days. UCU wants to work for a sustainable future for the university, for students, staff and the city of Dundee, but our members must take a stand against compulsory redundancies.'
Jo Grady, UCU general secretary, called upon the Scottish Government and Scottish Funding Council (SFC) to step in.
She said: 'Some seven months after first announcing that management failures had led to an unforeseen deficit, the fact that staff are still facing an uncertain future with management still unwilling to rule out the use of compulsory redundancies shows the ongoing crisis in the university's leadership and governance.
'The intervention of Scottish Government and the SFC is welcome and essential, but as well as dealing with the immediate crisis at Dundee, we also need to see wholescale revision of governance arrangements at universities to ensure this never happens again.'
The Scottish Government said it is working alongside the SFC to develop an alternative route.
A spokesperson said: 'Ministers appreciate this remains a deeply anxious time for staff at Dundee University.
'Whilst universities are autonomous institutions, we continue to encourage Dundee's management to protect jobs and engage fully with staff, students and trade unions.
'The Scottish Government has provided £25m to the SFC to support universities like Dundee facing immediate financial challenges. Work is also continuing with the Scottish Funding Council on the further development of an alternative Financial Recovery Plan.
'It is vital that students are supported at this time and that any potential impact of industrial action is managed carefully to avoid disruption to their studies.'
A UoD spokesperson said: 'This action from UCU is extremely disappointing, particularly in the context of recent progress towards a revised recovery plan and the timing of a strike when we are in a critical period of the academic year for our students.
'We believe we have robust contingency plans in place to mitigate the impact of strike action as far as we possibly can, particularly for confirming marks and degree classifications for our students.
'Most marking of exams is complete and we expect Exam Boards to meet and confirm results over the coming weeks.'

I consider it an honour to champion the Gaelic language, and I've been thankful that recent years have seen significant progress on Gaelic language and culture policy. Among these is the Scottish Languages Bill, which is progressing through parliament and, if passed by MSPs, will ensure there is a more robust legal framework for Gaelic's promotion, particularly in education and public life. Adding to this is the overall trend of recent years in public finance, which reflects continued investment in the language and its culture. We've seen sustained funding increases that recognise Gaelic language as a valuable asset that strengthens our national identity. READ MORE: Patrick Harvie: Increased UK defence spending only makes war more likely But to me, the most encouraging sign of Gaelic's growing cultural success is our booming Gaelic schools. Being a recipient myself of Gaelic medium education (GME), I have first-hand experience of its value and effectiveness, having first learned the language while studying in GME in the Highlands. Learning through Gaelic undoubtedly instilled in me a deep appreciation for Scotland's rich culture, and the importance of preserving it for future generations. It was a joy to further strengthen Gaelic medium education this week with an announcement of funding for a new Gaelic primary school. Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig a' Challtainn (Calton Gaelic Primary School) will become Glasgow's fourth Gaelic language primary school, following a £2 million investment from the Scottish Government. The school will have space for 416 pupils and will meet growing demand for Gaelic primary education in the city. Census figures published last year show a 45% increase in the number of people with some Gaelic skills in Glasgow compared to 2011. This school will build on the encouraging surge we have seen in the number of Gaelic speakers and learners in Glasgow and support the language's growth into the future. This exciting growth appears to be representative of the nationwide picture, with demand for places in Gaelic schools frequently outpacing supply – a problem we're delighted to have, as it demonstrates the genuine enthusiasm families have for bilingual education. Data from the Scottish Government tells us that in 2009, there were 2206 pupils in GME, compared with 5417 for the year 2022-2023. This represents an increase of 145%! The national picture for GME uptake is one of steady and encouraging growth. Perhaps this should be unsurprising, given the numerous and well-studied benefits of bilingualism in children. Evidence shows that bilingual children can demonstrate improved problem-solving, better attention and enhanced memory. There are also huge personal and confidence benefits that come from the knowledge and respect gained for Gaelic culture. There is a beautiful richness to be discovered in Gaelic songs, stories, traditions and history. It's not uncommon to hear concerns that Gaelic medium children will somehow be left behind compared to the majority who learn in English medium settings. But here, yet again, the evidence shows these fears to be unfounded. Children who go through Gaelic medium education match or exceed the levels of attainment of their monolingual contemporaries in English medium education. Gaelic medium education enriches communities and offers good value for money, providing better grade averages across all qualification levels despite costs being no greater than average. There are a multitude of reasons to embrace Gaelic medium education, and the evidence highlights that GME comes with a wealth of additional benefits for individuals and communities around the country. The announcement of funding for Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig a' Challtainn in Glasgow came alongside a host of other projects set to benefit from the Gaelic Capital Fund, with initiatives around the country gaining an additional £5.7m this year. Schools in locations such as Skye, Paisley, East Kilbride, Cumbernauld and Forfar will, among other things, receive new learning equipment, Gaelic signage and much sought-after upgrades to facilities. There's never been a better time to believe in Gaelic medium education. As a representative of Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, a constituency where 12% of the population has skills in Gaelic, I've never been prouder of the SNP majority government that is investing in Gaelic language and culture. It's my sincere hope that generations to come will look back with thankfulness on these definitive years for the Gaelic language, seeing them as a turning point. I'm convinced that for this to be the case, bolstering support for GME will play a crucial role. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: if we don't recognise and protect our national languages, nobody else will!

But under new proposals last month, around 300 roles will now be cut through a voluntary programme. The scheme was put together after talks with campus trade unions and approved by the university court. Voluntary redundancy was opened today and will run until July 25, The Courier reports. Staff who accept the deal will leave their jobs by September 30. A spokesperson added: "This is an important step in the recovery plan for the university, as we look to reduce staffing by 300 fulltime-equivalent through the voluntary scheme." The cuts were first revealed by interim principal Professor Shane O'Neill during a meeting, where he cited "the current financial crisis" as the reason behind the decision. Professor O'Neill had previously warned MSPs that the university could run out of cash by June without lifeline support. The Scottish Funding Council has since approved a £22 million emergency support package, and an investigation into the crisis has been launched. The uni has also lodged a full funding request for £100million bail-out. University Challenge contestant admits 'I don't understand the question' as they struggle to answer in quarter-final - but could you get it right? Labour MSP Michael Marra previously described the job losses as "devastating" for university staff and the Dundee economy. The job losses come amid an ongoing debate over university funding in Scotland. Critics argue that the Scottish Government's "free" tuition model is putting severe pressure on university finances, leading to limits on the number of Scottish students accepted onto courses since international students pay higher fees. Dundee is not the only university in Scotland to plan to cut jobs this year. Around 350 employees of the University of Edinburgh have accepted voluntary severance as part of ongoing efforts to reduce costs. And the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) plans to axe 75 jobs.

More than 50,000 people have written to the Public Finance Minister, Ivan McKee, in just two weeks, demanding that the Scottish Government withdraw its approval for Flamingo Land's Loch Lomond mega-resort planning application. In September 2024, the Yorkshire-based theme park operator, Flamingo Land Ltd, had their planning permission in principle rejected after all 14 board members of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs Planning Authority. However, the decision to reject the £40 million resort plans was overturned by a Scottish Government official last month, when the developers appealed the decision. READ MORE: More than £1m in funding announced for restoration projects for Scottish coastline The proposal for the resort includes plans for more than 100 holiday lodges, two hotels, a waterpark, a monorail, 372 car parking spaces, shops, and more on the site called Lomond Banks. According to the Scottish Greens, more than 50,000 people have used a portal on their website to call on the Scottish Government to overturn the decision and scrap the development. Greens MSP Ross Greer (below) said the public's opinion on the proposal, which is the most opposed in Scottish planning history with more than 155,000 individuals lodging objections, 'couldn't be clearer'. (Image: PA) He said: 'The Scottish Government has got this badly wrong. They are about to allow a greedy developer to trash the gateway to our National Park. It is not too late for a u-turn though. They can still save Loch Lomond. 'In just two weeks the Planning Minister has heard directly from over 50,000 people calling on him to block these proposals. Public opinion couldn't be clearer and it is backed up by experts including the Government's own environment watchdog. 'I have campaigned side by side with local residents in Balloch for nearly ten years now to stop Flamingo Land. At every stage we have won on the basis of the overwhelming evidence against their plans, but that has all now been overturned by the Scottish Government.' Organisations such as the National Trust for Scotland, the Woodland Trust, the Ramblers, and the Scottish Government environment watchdog, SEPA, also raised objections against the plans. Greer added: 'I do not understand why the Scottish Government are determined to cosy up to greedy theme park operators rather than protect Scotland's world famous natural heritage. 'It's time for Government Ministers to actually listen to the people of Scotland and save Loch Lomond.' The news comes after Scottish ministers refused planning permission for a trotting track for harness racing on the historic Bannockburn battlefield site. The Scottish Government ruled that the proposals would 'introduce new development and urbanisation in one of the few remaining undeveloped parts of the battlefield'. As such, it ruled the development 'would have a significant adverse effect on the character of the battlefield, its setting and sense of place'. The site is where in June 1314 Robert the Bruce and his Scottish army famously defeated English troops led by King Edward II. The Scottish Government has been approached for comment.
