Alonso missed him, too, in what has been a difficult start to the tournament for the team's new coach. Madrid was underwhelming against Al Hilal — Saudi Arabia's most successful team — and missed a 92nd-minute penalty to win the match.

It was Alonso's first game in charge of the 15-time European champion, which is famously demanding of its coaches. Last month he replaced Carlo Ancelotti, who left to join the Brazil national team after winning three Champions Leagues and two Spanish titles in two stints at the club.
Despite being the overwhelming favorite against Al Hilal, Madrid had to settle for a draw after surviving a number of scares in the first half — leaving Alonso to call for patience.
'We know this is going to take time,' he said.
The 26-year-old Mbappe was Madrid's top scorer last season, with 43 goals in 56 appearances in his first year since joining from Paris Saint-Germain.
His hospitalization came almost exactly one year after he sustained a broken nose at the European Championship and had to wear a face mask to continue playing in the tournament.

Two signings could complete Manchester United's new starting XI
Having responded to a season that ended on a minus goal difference with four defensive signings last year, Manchester United are redressing the balance this summer after their goal difference became ten times worse. Dorgu's first four months were mixed and one assist was a derisory return. It would not have helped that whenever he had the ball and looked up he saw either Rasmus Hojlund or Zirkzee. US advances in CONCACAF Gold Cup but still a work in progress and inconsistent under Pochettino

Yet two wins in two matches have been far from consistent and still raise questions about the young squad coach Mauricio Pochettino is guiding into the quarterfinals. The Americans advanced out of Group D with a match still to play with Thursday night's 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia thanks to defender Chris Richards' left-footed goal off a free kick from Sebastian Berhalter. 'We need to be calm,' Pochettino said. 'This is the second victory in a row in the competition. We still need to be improve. The competition is going to be tougher.' Richards' goal was the lone moment of finesse from a U.S. attack that scored five goals against Trinidad and Tobago, and then looked mostly stagnant and stifled by Saudi Arabia on a steamy night in Texas. There were a couple of glaring defensive lapses, as well. Richards had to track back to save the U.S. from an early deficit when a mistake by Alex Freeman nearly surrendered a goal in the first half. The Americans' two wins in the tournament so far have come against a Trinidad and Tobago team ranked No. 100 in the world, and No. 58 Saudi Arabia. They will end Group D play Sunday against No. 83 Haiti in Arlington, Texas. 'It wasn't an easy game. They are very competitive,' Pochettino said. 'They have quality.'
