Ahmedabad family's desperate search for music director whose last known location was 700 metres from Air India plane crash site
Apart from the several distraught families grieving the loss of their loved ones, who died in the Air India plane crash, there is one that is anxiously looking for answers. The family of Mahesh Kalawadia (34), who directs music albums and was neither in the flight nor in the hostel where it crashed, has been looking for him in hospitals, morgues and police stations. So far, they haven't been able to trace him or the Activa scooter on which he was headed home.
The family is worried as Mahesh's last location before his phone switched off is nearly 700 metres from the BJ Medical College hostel that the Boeing Dreamliner crashed into.
His younger brother, Kartik (32), told The Indian Express, 'He spoke to his wife Hetal around 1:10 pm on Thursday and told her he just got done with a meeting near Law Garden. They shared a few jokes, and he said he was on his way to their Naroda residence.'
Kartik said that when Mahesh did not return home for an hour, Hetal dialled his number, which was switched off. 'She kept trying but could not get through,' he said.
When she heard about the plane crash, she called Kartik, who then started looking for his brother.
'While we were anxious, I felt there was nothing to worry about as the Meghani Nagar hostel where the incident took place would ideally not be a spot he would cross on the usual route,' Kartik said.
When he went to the police station, most officials were occupied with the crash. 'Over the next 24 hours, through some helpful cops, we found that the last location before my brother's phone was switched off was in Meghani Nagar, some 700 metres from the spot. We were told that mobile data does not show pinpoint location, so he may be closer to the accident spot,' he said.
Scared and partly confused why he would take that route, Kartik and their relatives went to all the hospitals in the area. 'We were told all bodies were at the Civil hospital. There too, we went through the list of the deceased, the injured and the unclaimed persons, but my brother was nowhere to be found. For the past two nights, we have been going from hospital to police station to the accident site, but there has been no update,' he said.
He has also been trying to trace his bike, which would provide some clues, but to no avail.
'We have given a complaint at the local Naroda police station, but they have not been able to do much, and we are just hoping to get some news of his safety,' he said.
Apart from Kalawadia, those missing since the crash include Sarlaben Thakor, the cook at the hostel mess, and her two-year-old granddaughter.

Slew of complaints in gold investment scam
Thiruvananthapuram: Fort police, probing the gold fraud linked to Al Muqtadir Gold and Diamond Jewelry, received over a hundred complaints in the past 24 hours. While police began registering cases, some of the complainants later withdrew their complaints after the jewellery representatives promised to return the deposited gold or money, said Fort police. The overall number of cases registered in the fraud case is 18. Most complainants said they were drawn in by repeated ads in mainstream newspapers. "When gold was offered without making charges, we saw it as a good investment. They also offered schemes like exchanging old ornaments for new ones, or monthly returns for depositing gold for a fixed term. After maturity, they promised to return the original gold. There were also deposit schemes where money could be paid in instalments to get gold at a discount — none of these promises were kept," said Laila S, one of the complainants. Sabeena Beevi, 48, of Kazhakkoottam, deposited 131 grams of gold for 11 months, expecting new ornaments for her daughter's wedding — but received neither. The police found that the firm hired hundreds of agents on commission to attract investors. Many of them are now being added as accused. On Saturday, three people, Gulzar Seth, Soubin, and Jasim were named. The owner Muhammed Mansoor Abdulsalam and six others were added earlier. The cases are registered under BNS Sections 316(4) and 318(2) for criminal breach of trust and cheating. tnn Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Eviction ignored: Scam accused still control Kinfra unit
T'puram: The accused in the Nirmal Krishna deposit fraud maintain control of a garment factory on a 50-cent plot in Kinfra, defying eviction orders from both the Buds authority and home department. These directives mandated the property's return to its legitimate owner and the transfer of lease premium to the Buds authority through revenue recovery. The 54,000 sq ft factory and land legally belong to Usha Umesh, an entrepreneur, from whom the accused acquired the property through Kinfra's tacit approval, violating established protocols. Kinfra transferred the land to Kanyakumari Exports Private Ltd, owned by fraud accused K Nirmalan, without proper documentation. Nirmalan subsequently transferred it to Sreejith, another accused and his alleged benami. The property currently generates Rs 6 lakh monthly in rent. Umesh, the rightful owner, attempted to access the factory on Thursday, armed with favourable orders from the home department, Buds authority and district collector. However, Kinfra denied her entry while allowing the accused to continue operations. "When I tried to enter, they demanded proof of ownership. Despite submitting all necessary documentation, they requested additional time for verification," said Umesh. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
