Panthers begin rookie minicamp
The Carolina Panthers' rookies returned to the practice fields on Friday afternoon.
The team's newest players are spending the weekend at rookie minicamp, getting comfortable with their new home.

Head Coach Dave Canales calls it more than an evaluation, but rather a chance to lay the groundwork for the newest rookie class.
'This weekend is about introducing them to the workflow, the field expectation, when we're on the grass, the tempo that we use, the energy that we go about our work, and then in the classroom,' Canales said. 'Getting used to the learning style of the player.'
All eyes are on first-round pick Tetairoa McMillan, a wide receiver out of Arizona.
'I kind of lean on the people that have been through what I haven't been through—the vets, the coaches, just again gaining any knowledge or wisdom I have from them is only going to keep me sane and help me," McMillian said.
Rookie minicamp continues tomorrow afternoon.

Rory McIlroy shot 81 during rough US Open practice round
Oakmont Country Club wasn't kind to Rory McIlroy during a recent practice round. The reigning Masters champion said Tuesday that he shot an 81 over 18 holes at the Pennsylvania course on June 2 ahead of the U.S. Open, which starts on Thursday. But then you just have to think about leaving your ball below the hole and just trying to make as many pars as you can. You get yourself in the way of a few birdies, that's a bonus.' McIlroy hasn't played like his usual self in recent weeks, finishing T-47 at the PGA Championship and missing the cut at the RBC Canadian Open last week. McIlroy's mini-slump comes after his driver was deemed non-conforming before the PGA Championship. He told reporters Tuesday that he hopes those troubles are behind him heading into the year's third major tournament. 'I feel like, as the last few weeks go, I think I learnt a lot on Thursday and Friday last week and did a good bit of practice at home and feel like I'm in a better place with everything going into this week.' After completing the career Grand Slam, McIlroy admitted that it's been tough to stay motivated on the golf course. 'I worked incredibly hard on my game from October last year all the way up until April this year (and) it was nice to sort of see the fruits of my labor come to fruition and have everything happen,'' McIlroy said Tuesday. 'But at the same time, you have to enjoy that. You have to enjoy what you've just accomplished. I certainly feel like I'm still doing that and I will continue to do that. 'At some point, you have to realize that there's a little bit more golf left to play this season — here, Portrush [the British Open], Ryder Cup — so those are obviously the three big things that I'm sort of looking at for the rest of the year.'

(AP) — The Buffalo Bills signed Shaq Thompson to a one-year contract on Tuesday, in providing the veteran linebacker an opportunity to continue his career after two injury-shortened seasons. The 31-year-old Thompson was not re-signed by Carolina in March after spending his first 10 seasons with the Panthers. He joins the Bills, where he's reunited with coach Sean McDermott, who was Carolina's defensive coordinator during Thompson's first two seasons with the team after being selected in the first round of the 2015 draft. Advertisement Thompson is also familiar with Bills linebackers coach Al Holcomb and general manager, Brandon Beane, who have previous ties to the player's time in Carolina. 'I was a young pup back in the day, now 11 years, seasoned vet, so time is coming around,' Thompson said. 'You never thought it would happen to yourself, but everything is a blessing. Everything happens in God's hands and fortunately I came here and I'm happy here.' Thompson was a starter in Carolina from his rookie season, and enjoyed a stretch from 2019-2022 in which he topped 100 tackles each year, before being slowed by injuries. He's appeared in just six games over the past two years after breaking his ankle in 2023 and then tearing his Achilles tendon in Week 4 the following year.
