Uttarakhand hospitals on high alert amid border tensions; 12,000 beds, ICUs ready
Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], May 9 (ANI): Amid the ongoing tensions with Pakistan, the Uttarakhand government has instructed all hospitals in the state to remain on high alert.
Leaves of doctors and staff in hospitals have been cancelled.
Following instructions of the Central Health Ministry, Uttarakhand Health Secretary R Rajesh Kumar has issued necessary guidelines and instructed the state to mark 12,000 beds in all the hospitals and keep all ICUs and ventilators ready.
In view of India's ongoing Operation Sindoor against Pakistan, Nepal and China borders adjoining Uttarakhand are also on alert. After midnight, Indian Army planes kept flying over the skies of Doon. Meanwhile, the Indian Army shot down more than 50 Pakistani drones during a large-scale counter-drone operation along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) on Thursday night, sources confirmed to ANI.
The operation was launched after Pakistan made failed attempts to send multiple swarm drones into Indian territory across different locations.
The Indian Army Air Defence units responded swiftly and targeted the drones in areas including Udhampur, Samba, Jammu, Akhnoor, Nagrota, and Pathankot.
'Yesterday night, when Pakistan made failed attempts to send swarm drones all across various places along the LoC and IB, over 50 drones were successfully neutralised during a large-scale counter-drone operation conducted by Indian Army Air Defence units in the areas of Udhampur, Samba, Jammu, Akhnoor, Nagrota, and Pathankot areas,' sources told ANI.
The Army used several air defence systems and weapons to destroy the drones.
'The engagement involved extensive use of L-70 guns, Zu-23mm, Schilka systems, and other advanced counter-UAS equipment, demonstrating the Army's robust capability to counter aerial threats,' sources added.
Following the incident, Jammu and Kashmir's former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced on X, 'Driving to Jammu now to take stock of the situation after last night's failed Pakistani drone attack directed at Jammu city & other parts of the division.'
Residents also reported a tense night near the border.
'There was a complete blackout last night. After which, drones started flying and firing continued the entire night. Our forces are giving Pakistan a befitting reply. We have trust in our Prime Minister and our Army. All drones were neutralised by our forces. We are proud of our country. There is tension near the border, but the rest of the places are safe,' a resident told ANI.
Another local told ANI, 'Last night at around 8 PM, we saw 3-4 drones. There was retaliatory firing, which continued the entire night. What Pakistan did is not right. We are not scared. Schools are closed here.'
The Indian Armed Forces successfully thwarted the drone attack targeting civilian areas. No casualties have been reported so far. (ANI)

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday planted a 'sindoor' sapling at a government school in Shalimar Bagh and said the country's military response to the Pahalgam terror attack was a reflection of our 'national spirit'. She inaugurated the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0' campaign at the school in Shalimar Bagh and said that the Delhi government is planning to plant 70 lakh saplings this year. This comes days Ms. Gupta assured her commitment to sustainable urban development and environmental conservation on World Environment Day. 'Our resolve is to make Delhi not just a Capital but a symbol of greenery, cleanliness and compassion. For this purpose, a target of planting 70 lakh saplings has been set this year so that a green and healthy Delhi can be provided to the coming generations,' the CM said in an X post. She said that planting saplings is 'one of the few ways to combat pollution'. She planted a sindoor tree as part of the campaign, thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the armed forces for 'ensuring the dignity of our sisters through 'Operation Sindoor''. 'This tree is a symbol of a mother's love and our nation's spirit,' she said.

Army to get new air defence boost with Rs 30,000 crore QR-SAM deal
NEW DELHI: The defence ministry will soon take up the case for a preliminary nod to a Rs 30,000 crore proposal to procure three regiments of the new indigenous quick reaction surface to air missile (QR-SAM) systems for the Army. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Rajnath Singh-led defence acquisitions council will consider granting acceptance of necessity (AoN) for the highly-mobile QR-SAM systems, which are designed to intercept hostile fighters, helicopters and drones at a range up to 25-30 km, later this month. The move comes soon after India's existing multi-layered air defence network played a crucial role in thwarting multiple waves of Turkish-origin drones and Chinese missiles launched by Pakistan during Operation Sindoor - the May 7-10 hostilities. The and the Army have over the last three-four years tested the QR-SAM systems against high-speed aerial targets mimicking various types of threats to evaluate their capability under different day and night operational scenarios. Defence PSUs Bharat Electronics and Bharat Dynamics will co-produce the QR-SAM systems. "The QR-SAM systems can operate on the move with search and track capability and fire at short halts. They are tailor-made to move along with tanks and infantry combat vehicles to provide them air defence in the tactical battlefield," an official said. The Army Air Defence (AAD), which performed exceedingly well during Operation Sindoor, in fact, requires 11 regiments of the QR-SAM, even as it progressively also inducts regiments of the indigenous Akash system, which has an interception range of about 25-km at present. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The induction of the QR-SAM systems will add to the existing air defence network of the IAF and the Army, which ranges from the long-range Russian S-400 'Triumf' surface-to-air missile systems (380 km interception range) and Barak-8 medium range SAM systems (70 km), jointly developed with Israel, to the Russian shoulder-fired Igla-S missiles (6 km), the upgraded L-70 anti-aircraft guns (3.5 km) and the indigenous integrated drone detection and interdiction systems (1km-2 km). While the DRDO is also readying the very short-range air defence missile systems (VSHORADS), which have a 6 km interception range, the real game-changer will be an air defence system with a 350 km range being developed under the ambitious Project Kusha. India plans to operationally deploy this long-range system by 2028-2029, with the defence ministry in Sept 2023 approving the AoN for procurement of five of its squadrons for the IAF at a cost of Rs 21,700 crore, as was first reported by TOI.
