The Open becomes second major to create LIV Golf exemption

Reuters10-02-2025

Feb 10 (Reuters) - The R&A has created an exemption category for LIV Golf players to compete in The Open, it said on Monday, becoming the second major golf tournament to introduce a formal pathway for golfers on the Saudi-backed circuit after the U.S. Open.
The leading player not already exempt in the top five of this year's Individual Season Standings following the completion of LIV Golf Dallas will be awarded a place at the 153rd Open at Royal Portrush, the R&A said.
"The Open is a global championship for the best men's golfers and each year we review our exemptions to ensure that we offer pathways into the Championship based on results achieved on the leading professional tours," Mark Darbon, Chief Executive at the R&A, said in a statement.
"We acknowledge that players competing in LIV Golf should also have the opportunity to secure places in The Open through its individual season standings as well as existing pathways.
"We are proud to offer a wide range of opportunities to qualify globally and look forward to seeing which golfers will emerge to take their place at Royal Portrush in July."
While LIV Golf players had been eligible to play in golf's majors, there had previously been no direct pathway for them into the blue-riband events, which meant qualification was more difficult for those without previously existing exemptions.
On February 5, the USGA created an exemption category for LIV Golf players to compete in the U.S. Open.
LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil thanked the R&A for creating an exemption category at The Open.
"The Open Championship is one of the most prestigious events in all of sports," O'Neil said.
"The acknowledgement that competitors from the LIV Golf League and The International Series will have the opportunity to play in golf's original major is a true testament to the strength of fields and the R&A's commitment to golf fans around the world."
The next edition of The Open will be played from July 13-20.

Eye-watering details of Cristiano Ronaldo's new £488k-a-day Al-Nassr contract

Cristiano Ronaldo agreed a mindblowing deal to extend his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr for another two years and the forward won't be short of cash Cristiano Ronaldo will earn a whopping £492million over two years after signing his new deal with Al-Nassr and has landed an ownership stake in the club. The Portugal international, 40, has extended his stay in the Saudi Pro League after months of speculation over his future. Announcing his new deal, Ronaldo posted to social meda. 'A new chapter begins,' he wrote, 'Same passion, same dream. Let's make history together.' ‌ And despite turning 40 earlier this year, the former Real Madrid, Juventus and Manchester United superstar has earned a payrise. The veteran even earned a mischievous comment from David De Gea, who said: 'And playing for free,' with a laughing face and the eyes emoji. ‌ The Spaniard had good reason to poke fun given the substantial nature of Ronaldo's new package at Al-Nassr. On top of a basic £488,000-a-day pay, Ronaldo becomes a 'dream ambassador' to earn greater perks, per reports. In addition to his £178m salary, the forward is taking home a £24.5m signing bonus that will increase to £38m should he enter the second year of his deal. Bonuses are also available if he achieves the golden boot and wins the league title, worth £4m and £8m respectively. Ronaldo will also be afforded 16 full-time staff comprised of three drivers, four housekeepers, two chefs, three gardeners and four members of security, costing £1.4m. There is also the use of a private jet worth £4m and the possibility of sponsorship deals reaching £60m from Saudi companies. Perhaps among the most enticing of all however is a new ownership stake in the club. The report states that Ronaldo has earned a 15 per cent holding in his side as he looks to win silverware with Al-Nassr for the first time. Speaking after turning 40, Ronaldo revealed becoming an owner of multiple football clubs was an ambition of his. The Portuguese star has no desire to move into coaching if he can afford to make such purchases. ‌ 'It doesn't make a lot of sense to be director of a club. If I can be a club owner, why would I be a manager, sporting director or CEO?,' he told Portuguese television station Canal 11 earlier this year. 'That is a dream of mine and I am sure I'll be a club owner. And I'll tell you more. I hope to have not just one club, but several clubs.' Ronaldo revealed earlier in June that he'd received many approaches but he made the decision not to complete a transfer for the Club World Cup. "There have been a lot of contacts, I see things that make sense, others that don't, as the other guy says, you can't go to everything, you have to think short, medium and long term," he said. "It's a decision that has practically been made on my part, which is not to go to the Club World Cup, but I've had a lot of invitations." Singapore's renewables usage hits record high as imports, solar output rise

SINGAPORE, June 27 (Reuters) - Singapore boosted the share of renewables in its power generation mix to a record high in May, an analysis of the latest market data showed, as the country ramped up renewable imports and accelerated local solar power generation. Domestic solar generation in May rose at the fastest pace since March 2024 and renewable imports rose a third straight month to their highest in more than two years, lifting the share of renewables in the city-state's power mix to 2.58%, data from the National Electricity Market of Singapore showed. Regional electricity trade is crucial to Singapore's aim to become carbon neutral by 2050, as Asia's second-smallest country has limited renewable energy potential. Cross-border power trade is also seen as key to easing regional reliance on fossil fuels amid growing data centre-driven power demand. Gas-fired power plants in Singapore account for about 95% of its power capacity. In the five months through May, the data showed Singapore imported 122.7 million kilowatt-hours of clean power - 0.52% of total generation - through the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore (LTMS) power trade route that was set up in 2022. It did not import any power during the same period last year, the data showed, and only started importing small quantities in the last quarter of 2024. The share of imports in Singapore's power mix rose for a third straight month in May, displacing some fossil fuel-fired generation. Singapore's total electricity generation grew 0.4% during the first five months, the data showed. Though the imported power came through the LTMS framework, all of it originated from neighbouring Malaysia under a 50-megawatt supply agreement reached last year with Malaysian state utility Tenaga Nasional Berhad, said a source familiar with the matter who was not authorised to speak with media. Singapore's Energy Market Authority (EMA) did not respond to a request for comment. The EMA last year doubled the capacity of electricity that can be traded in the second phase of the LTMS to 200 MW through additional supply from Malaysia. It said in October, however, that it had yet to finalise the terms of an extension to the supply of hydropower generated in Laos and sent to Singapore via Thailand and Malaysia.

Bradley Neil created history on the Tartan Pro Tour as he became the first player to win the same event two years in a row with a successful title defence in the Newmachar Classic presented by Boskalis. The Blairgowrie man, who is attached to Turnhouse these days after going down the PGA training path, pipped overnight leaders Liam Johnston and Rory Franssen in the latest event on the Scottish-based circuit. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Neil, who started the final round four shots off the lead, signed off with a seven-under-par 65 - the joint-best effort of the day along with Craig Ross - to land a top prize worth £4,175 with a 202 total. The victory also secured a spot for the 2014 Amateur champion in the Farmfoods Scottish Challenge supported by The R&A at Schloss Roxburghe in the Borders next month. Bradley Neil shows off the trophy after winning the Newmachar Classic presented by Boskalis for the second year in a row | Tartan Pro Tour 'I was delighted with the win and it is nice that I have become the first player to win an event for the second year in a row, which was a bit of a surprise, to be honest,' admitted Neil. His sparkling closing effort on the Hawkshill Course at the Aberdeenshire venue was sparked by birdies at the opening two holes. He then added gains at the sixth, eighth, ninth, 11th, 13th and 16th, with his sole dropped shot coming at the last. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Johnston, who'd catapuled himself up the leaderboard on the back of a second-round 63, parred the final eight holes as he came up one short of the clubhouse target, with Franssen missing out on a play-off after he bogeyed the last. 'I didn't really think winning on this occasion was in the equation as Liam and Rory have been playing some great golf while I'd missed the cut in every event before this one,' added Neil. 'I was surprised that no one else in the last three groups managed to post a score like I did, especially as Craig Ross had shot seven under as well in an earlier group. 'It was good enough to get the job done for me, though, and that's all that matters when you are in contention in a golf tournament.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Neil, who played on both the DP World Tour and Hotel Planner Tour at the start of his professional career, joined Peter Mitchell's staff at Turnhouse over the winter. 'I am wanting to go out and play care-free golf and play with a bit of freedom, especially now that I am doing my PGA training, which means I am in the shop three days a week and coaching,' he said. 'It's been anything but fun, to be honest' 'When I am playing in competitions, that's when I should be happy about getting that opportunity. It should be my time to relax and have fun but, apart from my PGA in Scotland Fourball wins with Graeme Robertson earlier in the year, it's been anything but fun, to be honest.' Johnston, who is playing in Tuesday's Open Final Qualifying at Dundonald Links after winning one of the Regional Qualifiers at Kilmarnock (Barassie) last Monday, and Franssen, a winner at Blairgowrie on the Tartan Pro Tour earlier in the season, each picked up £2,665.
