Air India Plane Crash: 184 DNA Matches Confirmed

Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi on Wednesday announced that 184 DNA samples have been matched so far after the tragic London-bound Air India plane crash.
In a post on the social media platform X, Mr Sanghavi wrote, "Air India crash update: As of 8 am, 184 DNA have been matched."

DNA testing is being conducted by forensic teams from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU).
Earlier on Tuesday, Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Superintendent Rakesh Joshi reported that a total of 163 DNA samples have been matched.
During a press conference, Mr Joshi provided a detailed account of the count, noting that out of the remaining 39 of the 163 matched victims, mortal remains of 21 deceased will be handed over to their families by Wednesday morning and remains of two deceased are in the process of being handed over. He stated that more than 12 families were waiting for the results, and the handing over of four dead bodies is on hold due to some legal issues.
"Till 5.45 pm today, 163 DNA samples have matched. Following which, the mortal remains of 124 deceased have been handed over to their families. Out of the remaining 39, the mortal remains of 21 deceased will be handed over to their families by morning. Mortal remains of two deceased are in the process of being handed over. 12 families are waiting for the results... Handing over of four dead bodies is on hold due to some legal issues," Mr Joshi stated.
He further stated that on the day of the crash, 71 injured individuals were admitted to the Civil Hospital, with 42 subsequently discharged and currently, nine patients remain admitted. At the same time, two succumbed to their injuries after admission."On the day of the crash, 71 injured people were admitted to the Civil Hospital. Out of them, 42 have been discharged. The crash occurred on June 12, when a London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a hostel complex of BJ Medical College in the Meghani Nagar area of Gujarat's Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, The tragedy claimed 241 lives out of 242 onboard, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

Nineteen patients still at Ahmedabad hospitals a week after plane crash
A total of 71 injured persons had been admitted to Ahmedabad's Medicity campus after the fatal crash of an Air India flight last week, Medical Superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi said. As of Wednesday morning, 19 remain admitted to various hospitals across Gujarat. After the crash, six patients had minor injuries and were given Outdoor Patient Department (OPD) treatment, leaving 65 patients admitted in the Indoor Patient Department (IPD). Among the IPD patients, 11 were in the Gujarat Cancer Research Institute (GCRI), one was at the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre (UNMICRC) and one was in a private hospital in Naroda area of the city, leaving 52 patients at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. Notably, 30 of the patients at the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital were medical students who had been injured when the tail end section of the aircraft crashed into the mess hall of their hostel, setting fire to three of four buildings. Of the 52 patients at the Civil Hospital, three patients lost their lives during treatment including one person within 40 minutes of arrival on June 12 and two others who succumbed to burn injuries on June 16 and 17. This brought the number of patients to 49, out of which 42 have either been discharged or they sought transfers to private hospitals as of June 17 night. Thus, as of June 18 morning, across Gujarat, there remained 19 patients still under treatment. These included the seven patients at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, five at KD Hospital, five at Zydus Ahmedabad, and one each at Apollo Ahmedabad and Zydus Dahod. DNA matches and bodies handed over Dr Joshi, giving the bulletin of DNA matches and bodies of the deceased being handed over to the families, said that a total of 190 DNA matches had been confirmed as of Wednesday (June 18) morning. A total of 159 bodies had been handed over to families, as well as seven bodies whose DNA matching was not required and three bodies of patients who died during treatment. Of the 159 bodies that have been handed over to families, 123 are Indians, 4 are Portuguese nationals, 27 are British nationals, one is a Canadian and four are non-passengers. A total of 129 bodies were transported locally within Gujarat by road, while 28 other bodies were sent to other states, including 17 by road and 11 by air. The bodies of two British nationals, Ashok Patel and his wife Shobhana Patel, were flown to the UK. There are more than 15 families who claimed more than one body in the plane crash, Dr Patel said.

AI plane crash: 190 victims identified, bodies of 32 foreigners among 159 handed over to kin
Ahmedabad, Jun 18 (PTI) At least 190 victims of last week's Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad have so far been identified through DNA tests and 159 bodies, including of 32 foreign nationals, handed over to their families, officials said on Wednesday. The London-bound Air India flight AI-171 carrying 242 passengers and crew members crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12. All but one on board the plane died along with nearly 29 on the ground when the aircraft smashed into a medical complex. Authorities are carrying out DNA tests to establish the identity of the victims as many bodies were charred beyond recognition or damaged. "Till Wednesday morning, 190 DNA samples have been matched, and 159 bodies have already been handed over to the respective families. The process of matching (DNA samples of) other bodies is still on," Ahmedabad Civil Hospital's medical superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi told reporters. The 159 victims whose mortal remains have been handed over to their relatives included 127 Indians, four Portuguese nationals, 27 British nationals and one Canadian, he said. Among the bodies of 127 Indians given to their kin were four victims killed on the ground and 123 on board the flight, said Joshi. Following the crash, 71 injured persons were admitted to hospitals, he said. "Of them, only seven are currently undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital, while 12 other patients are admitted to private hospitals in Ahmedabad and Dahod. Three patients lost their lives during treatment here (civil hospital)," Joshi said. The state government had earlier stated that samples of 250 victims, including persons on board the ill-fated flight as well as those killed on the ground, were collected for identification.
