Morocco World25-04-2025

Rabat – Morocco's Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing global challenges through collective intelligence and academic cooperation at the U7+ Alliance Summit.
UM6P was represented by Khalid Baddou at the summit, which was co-chaired by Professor Lamiae Azizi from UM6P and Professor Valerie Amiraux from the Montreal University. Baddou joined U7+ leadership in adopting a joint unified statement addressed to G7 country leaders.
The letter focuses on the role of universities in the governance and responsible use of AI, a statement from UM6P said today.
'The U7+ working group outlines concrete recommendations across four pillars: AI workforce development, inclusive innovation, public policy frameworks, and efforts to close the global AI divide,' the statement said.
These top universities are aligning to tackle global policy challenges, as well as boost academic expertise to influence international governance frameworks.
The alliance aims to put academic leadership at the forefront to ensure AI development aligns with the values of equity, trust, and responsible governance.
The participation aligns with UM6P's broader institutional model that includes interdisciplinary education, public policy engagement, and research.
'Within this framework, its AI Movement is now a UNESCO Category II Center, mandated to position Morocco as a regional leader in AI transformation,' UM6P added, celebrating the adoption of ChatGPT Edu across UM6P's learning environments.
UM6P is the first African university to adopt this approach. Within this context, the university is also boosting women's integration within the AI field by providing training aimed at accelerating the next generation of women leaders in AI across the continent.
The goal is to empower 150 women through its first cohort. Tags: UM6PUM6P initiatives

Morocco's 40 Under 40 Gala Launches with Star-Studded Celebration in Rabat

Rabat – An exceptional gala marked the inaugural edition of Morocco's 40 Under 40 in the Moroccan capital over the weekend, with the event celebrating a new generation of national and international talent. It brought together distinguished guests and recognized 40 Moroccans and members of the diaspora under the age of 40, selected for their outstanding achievements across a wide range of sectors. The gala took place on the evening of Saturday, May 31 in the presence of high-level officials and guests, but the focus remained squarely on the laureates, individuals under 40 who represent a future already in motion. Their achievements reflect personal success and a shared momentum to shape Morocco's trajectory at home and beyond its borders. Walid Regragui, head coach of the national football team, stepped onto the stage as guest of honor and brought the room to life with a message that resonated far beyond the technicalities of football. He spoke of belief, resilience, and collective purpose. Badr Boussabat, president of Morocco's 40 Under 40, opened the evening with words that captured the spirit of the initiative. 'It is not just a celebration,' he said. 'It is a moment to recognize that these young leaders are already forming meaningful partnerships between Moroccans and members of the diaspora.' Industry and Trade Minister Ryad Mezzour, Digital Transition and Administrative Reform Minister Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, and Khalid Badou of Mohammed VI Polytechnic University also shared their perspectives, each one anchoring the evening in a broader conversation about Morocco's future. The atmosphere was one of sincerity rather than spectacle. Mentors of the program, 40 figures who supported the selected laureates, also received the recognition they deserve. The initiative owes much to its partners. Casablanca Finance City, Dislog Group, Technopark, Accenture, and ACS all played a key role in supporting this ambitious first edition. The gala itself took place at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, a partner that continues to host and encourage spaces for innovation and exchange. With this first edition, Morocco's 40 Under 40 steps into a decade-long journey. By 2030, the program looks to bring together 200 Moroccan and diaspora leaders into a unique network, ready to serve the country's strategic shifts and global aspirations. Morocco has entered the top 10 African startup ecosystems, according to the Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2025, an annual report by StartupBlink that ranks over 1,000 cities and 100 countries worldwide based on the strength and vibrancy of their startup landscapes. The country is now ranked 88th globally, climbing four spots from last year's 92nd position, with a score of 0.687. Morocco has recorded the highest growth rate (over 23%) among North African countries. Regionally, it ranks 3rd in North Africa, behind Egypt (65th globally) and Tunisia (82nd). In Africa overall, Morocco ranks 9th, ahead of Senegal but behind South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Cape Verde, Ghana, and Namibia. Globally, the top five positions are held by the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel, Singapore, and Canada. Casablanca, Morocco's startup hub Morocco has three cities in the global top 1,000, with Casablanca and Rabat showing strong momentum. Casablanca climbed an impressive 42 spots to rank 317th globally, with a growth rate of over 40%, the highest among Morocco's startup hubs and in North Africa. Rabat also advanced, rising seven places to 811th, with a growth rate exceeding 20%. In contrast, Agadir risks dropping out of the global top 1,000 due to a negative growth trend (968th). The report attributes Morocco's performance to its affordable and stable base for entrepreneurs seeking to access the North African market. It also highlights the impact of public and private initiatives, such as MoroccoTech, the Digital Morocco 2030 strategy, and events like GITEX Africa, which help position the country as a regional tech hub. Key capital funds such as UM6P Ventures, Maroc Numeric Fund, and the Innov Invest Fund play a crucial role in supporting early-stage startups, while organizations like StartUp Maroc and innovation hubs like Impact Lab contribute to building a dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystem, writes the authors of the report.

Rabat — Morocco has secured a spot in the top 10 African startup ecosystems, according to the latest Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2025 from American consulting firm StartupBlink. The ranking shows progress for the North African country, but also reveals barriers that still limit growth. 'Morocco recorded the highest growth (above 23%) in Northern Africa, moving up four spots to 88th.' Based on 33 key indicators, the ranking reveals that on a worldwide level, South Africa ranked 52nd, retaining its position as the African country with the best startup system. Next come Egypt (65th), Nigeria (66th), Cape Verde (75th), Ghana (81st), Tunisia (82nd), Namibia (85th), and Morocco (88th). Senegal (ranked 92nd worldwide) closes the African Top 10, ahead of Uganda (94th), Rwanda (96th), and Somalia (100th). Moroccan startups show strong growth Morocco recorded notable growth in the rankings, climbing four positions from the previous year. The country's startup ecosystem continues to expand, with cities like Casablanca and Rabat making significant strides in global rankings. Casablanca leads Morocco's tech scene, jumping 42 places to reach the 317th position worldwide. The city achieved a growth rate above 40%, the highest in North Africa. Meanwhile, the North African country's capital city of Rabat also improved, climbing seven spots to 811th place globally. Youth help drive Morocco's rise Several factors contribute to Morocco's climbing startup rankings. The report identified the country's tech-savvy youth population, growing digital connectivity, and increasing investment funds as key advantages. StartupBlink outlined Morocco's stable and accessible environment for entrepreneurs. These foundations have helped create momentum in the country's startup scene, particularly in major urban centers. Challenges remain Despite the progress, StartupBlink identifies several obstacles that limit Morocco's startup ecosystem growth. Economic and social constraints continue to affect the business environment. Many startups still struggle to access adequate funding, which limits their ability to scale and compete internationally. The regulatory framework also needs improvement to better support new businesses and innovation. StartupBlink suggests that Morocco must make investments more accessible and strengthen startup-focused infrastructure to accelerate growth. These improvements could help the country climb even higher in future rankings and compete more effectively with regional leaders. Tags: Moroccan startupsMoroccoStartup ecosystemsStartups in Morocco
