Northamptonshire passengers urged to plan ahead for railway work
Rail passengers were being urged to plan ahead for engineering work which will affect weekend journeys.Network Rail said the work on the Midland Mainline, which takes place on six consecutive weekends from 21 June, will result in "significant improvements".Intercity services will be diverted between Kettering in Northamptonshire, and Leicester, extending journey times by 45 minutes.The project involved work to make progress on a new phase of electrification, which would allow greener "bi-mode" trains to be introduced. There would also be upgrades to the track, signal and communications equipment and drainage systems.
The firm, which owns most of the UK's rail network, added that the project's benefits would include "making the line more resilient and benefitting train performance".
The work programme included lowering sections of track to accommodate overhead line equipment without the need to demolish and rebuild bridges.Network Rail said this would enable a new phase of electrification to take place between Wigston in Leicestershire and East Midlands Parkway, paving the way for a greener fleet of bi-mode trains to be introduced.
East Midlands Railway, which runs through Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough, will operate an amended timetable and trains will not call at Market Harborough.A connecting rail replacement bus service will operate between Kettering and Leicester, calling at Market Harborough.Additional services will be provided on Sundays for passengers travelling by Grantham.
Philippa Cresswell, the customer experience director for East Midlands Railway, said: "We recommend customers planning to travel to or from London over six weekends between Saturday 21 June and Sunday 27 July to check their journey in advance of travelling."We would like to thank our customers for their patience whilst Network Rail upgrade the overhead power lines to enable our bi-mode trains to run on our Intercity route in the future. This work will greatly benefit our customers with more reliable journeys to and from London."

Metro Bank shares soar as private equity takeover rumours emerge
Metro Bank shares rose sharply on Monday after rumours of a looming private equity takeover bid emerged over the weekend. The lender has been approached by London-based Pollen Capital about a potential takeover in early-stage informal talks in recent weeks, according to the Financial Times. Any potential deal could call time on a turbulent period as a publicly listed company for Metro Bank, which has seen its value plummet since its 2016 IPO. It would also mark another potential blow to London's shrinking public markets, which have faced 30 bids of more than £100million for UK-listed companies already this year. Pollen Street and Metro declined to comment on the potential deal. Metro, which was the first new UK high street bank in a century when it opened its debut London branch in 2010, has lost almost 95 per cent of its value since listing after a string of regulatory setbacks. It was also forced into an emergency fundraise in 2023 after shares halved in the wake of a regulatory breach related to changes to the capital requirements on the bank's mortgage book. Its market value has shrunk from £1.6billion at IPO to £755million as of Monday morning. The decline invited a takeover bid from specialist lender Shawbrook in 2023 that was later rejected. Metro has since shifted away from retail banking, despite a recent pledge to expand its brand network, and towards specialist lending to businesses and SMEs. Analysts at KBW Europe noted Pollen Street is also a major shareholder of Shawbrook and said there is 'commercial logic in such a transaction'. It added: 'Shawbrook is delivering strong commercial loan growth but has relatively expensive funding. 'Metro has ambitious plans to grow commercial lending that have yet to gather momentum, but has cheap current account funding. 'The value for Shawbrook in maintaining asset growth momentum at the same time as reducing deposit costs is potentially significant.' However, KBW said any transaction would depend on the willingness of Metro's management and shareholders 'to retire at this early stage in their strategy', as well as Pollen's ability to agree an acceptable price. Metro Bank shares were up 14.8 per cent to 128.8p by midmorning, having rocketed 260 per cent over the last 12 months. However they remain more than 95 per cent below their early 2018 peak. Peel Hunt analysts Stephen Payne and Stuart Duncan see 'significant potential valuation upside for Metro' if any deal emerges. They said: 'Using our forecasts, which assume a successful delivery of Metro's transformation plan, and reducing the cost-of-equity discount rate suggests an ultimate valuation north of 200p is feasible. 'This is clearly a bull case but comes into play in a bid scenario even though execution risk remains. Potential synergies also become a factor.'

Hockley Social Club in Birmingham to close at end of year
A street food, music and events venue in Birmingham is to close five years after being launched as a "hybrid food hall" during the Social Club will stop operating on 31 December after "five glorious years" during which it had become "a space for everyone", said Digbeth Dining Club (DDC) which created and ran the venture. The firm said it was the "natural end" to the project, which had brought a wide range of food, culture, music and community events to the warehouse in the city's Jewellery Quarter. It said the majority of Hockley Social Club jobs would be protected, with roles deployed to other parts of the business. DCC added it would hold six months of "farewell" events ahead of the closure. Hockley Social Club had begun as a "click and collect" concept during the Covid lockdowns in 2020. "This phase effectively saved DDC's business when we lost our Digbeth home, and were deemed not suitable for public crisis funding during the pandemic," a spokesperson said. 'We dug deep and pivoted many times, finally landing on a hybrid food hall and event space, a brand-new concept for the city."However, the firm added that after an "incredible journey" it was time to close the warehouse project and focus on other initiatives including DDC touring. "The natural end to our five-year project in this beautiful warehouse in the 'wrong part of town' has arrived," a statement said. 'We close the doors to Hockley Social Club (HSC) on Wednesday 31 December 2025, and take with us memories of events, nights, meals, and performances that will last a lifetime." DCC said over the past five years, the venue had welcomed more than 500,000 people and hosted more than 5,000 events, including performances from artists including Birmingham Royal Ballet and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
