Black box recovered from medical college roof
Ahmedabad: The crashed Ahmedabad-London Air India flight's black box has been recovered, the Ministry of Civil Aviation informed on Friday. The orange-coloured device located near the tail of a plane will help investigate the crash that has claimed 241 lives.
Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu said, "The Flight Data Recorder (Black Box) has been recovered within 28 hours from the accident site in Ahmedabad by AAIB. This marks an important step forward in the investigation. This will significantly aid the enquiry into the incident."
The device was recovered by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) team on the rooftop of the resident doctors' hostel building that the flight hit in Ahmedabad.
Further investigation into the crash has begun following the black box recovery. Over 40 Gujarat government staff joined efforts to augment civil aviation ministry teams on the crash site, sources said.
The black box is crucial in getting to the bottom of a plane crash. The device contains a Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR). While the former records all technical data related to the aircraft, the latter records the cockpit conversation between two pilots until the last minute.
The crash-proof device is located near the tail of the plane because, usually, an aircraft crashes on the side of the nose.
The black box's position on the plane helps investigators locate it faster after a crash. The device is insulated to withstand intense heat, surviving temperatures as high as 1,100C for at least one hour.

1 2 3 Kolkata: While only a few buses on route 223 are presently being tracked on the "Where Is My Bus App", an entire fleet of 106 buses plying on three routes – 45, 45A, and 45B – can be tracked on the app beginning next week. DC (Traffic) Shrikant Jagannathrao Yeilwad discussed passenger feedback with bus transporters about complaints of conductors charging "excessively" and forcing passengers to get off "at a spot of their choice". Cops warned that strict action will follow if these basic traffic rules are flouted. "All bus drivers are required to scan their vehicle's designated QR code and install the official tracking application prior to commencing their trips," said Titu Saha of City Suburban Bus Service. Two dead, one critical in bus-car crash
Haveri: A fatal accident involving an NWKRTC bus from Chikodi depot of Belagavi district and a car occurred near the Kumarapattan bypass in Ranebennur taluk on Saturday. The collision resulted in the death of two individuals, Vijay Annappa, 37, and Praveen Girish, 36, both residents of Davanagere city. Kottesh Abaloor suffered serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Davanagere. The accident took place when the transport bus, travelling from Athani to Davanagere, collided with the car on the bypass. Police reports indicate that the bus driver, who was operating on this route for the first time, lost his way and attempted to return via the service road on National Highway 48 near Kumarapattan bypass. The collision occurred when the bus was attempting to get back onto the national highway from the service road, with the carhitting its rear section. DRI arrests Air India crew member for smuggling gold from US to India, mastermind too nabbed
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested an Air India crew member for allegedly working for a gold smuggling racket and smuggling gold from the United States to India. The DRI also arrested the mastermind of the racket and seized smuggled gold worth Rs 1.41 crore. Acting on specific information, DRI officials on Friday intercepted Girish Pimpale, 42, who had arrived from New York on flight AI-116, near the exit gate after he crossed the customs green channel at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai. On his examination, the DRI officials seized two pieces of paper on which handwritten calculations regarding the purchase of gold were found. This bolstered DRI's suspicion of Pimpale's involvement. Hence, he was subsequently placed under interrogation in which he reportedly admitted his role in the smuggling activity. He also showed a pouch containing 1373.2 grams of foreign-origin gold (worth Rs 1.41 crore) on the side of a sofa placed near the baggage services area in the international arrival hall of Mumbai International Airport, which was subsequently seized, sources have said. Pimpale's further investigation revealed that one Rakesh Rathod was supposed to receive smuggled gold from him, as he is the mastermind running the racket. Rathod was subsequently arrested on Saturday. Mastermind offered AI crew Rs 2 lakh on every 1 kg of smuggled gold Explaining how the racket was being operated, another source said that Rathod would ask Pimpale to buy gold in the US, make payment in cash, smuggle it to India and give it to him, as there is a huge profit margin. Since crew members are not examined, taking advantage of the same, Rathod decided to rope in Pimpale for the smuggling job. Probe has revealed that Rathod offered Pimpale Rs 2 lakh on every 1 kg of smuggled gold. He would also arrange cash in the US using some hawala channels for Pimpale to buy gold there. Recently, Rathod arranged USD 150,000 in the US for Pimpale to buy the gold for smuggling purposes, the source added. Further investigation has revealed that Rathod and Pimpale have known each other for the past year, and he allegedly accepted smuggled gold from Pimpale twice in the past. Rathod has a criminal past. He was previously booked by the customs in a gold smuggling case by Mumbai customs in 2020. The DRI officials are further investigating the matter and are trying to find out details of other members of the racket and also the source of funds used in purchasing the gold. Both the accused have been arrested under relevant sections of the Customs Act.
