NCAA tournament: Texas vs. TCU sets up unlikely in-state matchup for a spot in the Final Four
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — It's a guarantee the state of Texas will be represented in the Final Four. The matter at hand is which team.
No. 1 Texas and No. 2 TCU secured their spots in the Elite Eight and will meet on Monday in the Birmingham 3 regional final at Legacy Arena. It's the state star versus the starry up-and-comer in what most coaches, including Texas head coach Vic Schaefer, describe as the most difficult game to win.

'We could have met in Corsicana [Texas] and saved money playing 'em,' Schaefer quipped following a 67-59 win over No. 4 Tennessee on Saturday. 'But nonetheless, I think it's great for our state.'
They hold one national championship between them, a Longhorns' victory in 1986. Texas hasn't been to the Final Four since 2003, when it finished off a two-year run. TCU has never been. The Horned Frogs have already made their deepest run into the tournament, eclipsing their previous five trips to the second round.
The game will feature nine players born and raised in Texas. The Longhorns roster six of them, led by Houston-born Rori Harmon. Schaefer recruited the point guard while he was at Mississippi State and successfully signed her at Texas when he took the job in 2020.

'As you know, when you are at the University of Texas, you try to close the borders and close the walls and keep the good ones in the state,' Schaefer said on Friday. 'In my mind she was one of the best in the country, if not the best.'
TCU stunned within the state in its own way when head coach Mark Campbell took the job in 2023 and brought home 6-foot-7 center Sedona Prince, a Liberty Hill native who he coached at Oregon.
The state's women's basketball success has largely been controlled by Baylor, a three-time champion under former head coach Kim Mulkey. They won titles in 2005, 2012 and 2019, plus a 2010 Final Four run ended by mighty UConn. Texas Tech (1993) and Texas A&M (2011) have made one appearance each.
In Mulkey's absence, Baylor kept winning, but at a less successful postseason rate. The Bears haven't made it out of the Sweet 16 since losing in the 2021 Elite Eight during Mulkey's final season. The head coach took over at LSU, where she's already won a fourth title and could meet a Texas squad in the national championship game. The Tigers face No. 1 overall seed UCLA in the Spokane 1 regional final on Sunday.

It's the Longhorns and Horned Frogs taking over the Lone Star State. Since the Longhorns dismissed Karen Aston, Schaefer has taken them to four regional finals in five seasons. They lost all three previous games.
'That game is very difficult and you gotta have kids that can just kinda block out all the distractions and everything around 'em and just go play the game,' Schaefer said.
The only year Schaefer didn't take Texas to the brink was in 2022 when, without their leading scorer, Louisville thumped the Longhorns by 22 in the second round. Hailey Van Lith scored 21 on a 63.6% shooting day.

Yes, the same Hailey Van Lith who carried TCU in its Sweet 16 win. For as much of a nightmare as Schaefer said the SEC is for him, HVL could provide more. The Horned Frogs are following a modern Mulkey model building a loaded roster via the transfer portal and reaching historic heights. They're the feel-good story of the tournament, a Final Four contender a year after holding tryouts for walk-ons.
To build their way to the Elite Eight, they swept three games with Baylor after a 35-year skid against the in-state rival. It began a strong couple of months of firsts on their way through the bracket. They can continue by beating another in Texas, which is 50-4 over TCU in the all-time in the series.
'This group embraced it,' Campbell said. 'When you go to the Big 12 tournament and you had never won one in school history, this group doesn't flinch. There is no fear.'

Tuesdays with Gorney: Ten big commitments that defined the weekend
During the first weekend of June visits, there were 33 Power Four commitments. That exploded during the second weekend with 54 pledges from Friday through Sunday night. Rivals national recruiting director Adam Gorney looks at the 10 most impactful commitments of the weekend in this edition of Tuesdays With Gorney. RECRUITING RUMOR MILL: Gigantic June rolls on as visits continue CLASS OF 2026 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2027 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State TRANSFER PORTAL: Full coverage | Player ranking | Team ranking | Transfer search | Transfer Tracker RIVALS CAMP SERIES: Rivals Five-Star heading back to Indy | Rivals Five-Star roster | Schedule/info Over the last few months, Ohio State, Miami and USC emerged as the three front-runners for Akih and then down the stretch it was the Buckeyes and Hurricanes, but the national champs were always going to be tough to beat. Once the four-star running back from Delaware (Ohio) Rutherford B. Hayes got that Ohio State offer, it emerged as the leader and finally landed his commitment over the weekend. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH OHIO STATE FANS AT Berymon has had some surprises in his recruitment. The four-star defensive tackle from Monroe (La.) Ouachita never seemed to connect with LSU so Texas, Purdue and USC were the three front-runners. It looked like the Trojans were ahead for a while and then the Boilermakers emerged because of his connection to position coach Kelvin Green. But over the weekend, Texas turned it up on Berymon and he picked the Longhorns, adding a muscled-up, tough interior defensive lineman to the class. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH TEXAS FANS AT Brady has been all over the recruiting and rankings radar throughout this cycle as he settled into being a four-star prospect but outside the Rivals250. Missouri beat out Nebraska, North Carolina and others for the Coconut Creek (Fla.) Monarch standout. He gives off vibes of Theo Wease Jr. during his time in Columbia – a big target who will catch a lot of passes; not a burner but explodes by defenders. Brady is a weapon and another big win for coach Eli Drinkwitz and staff. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH MISSOURI FANS AT Could USC's loss be Texas' gain? Brown and the Trojans parted ways when the four-star receiver from Waxahachie, Texas, wanted to take visits. The Longhorns, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Illinois, Utah, Colorado, SMU and Baylor then emerged as the serious contenders. It really came down to Texas and Notre Dame for Brown and he picked the Longhorns over the weekend, giving an already loaded receiver room another big weapon. How many will USC take this recruiting class? The No. 1 class in the country has 28 commitments after adding Dyer over the weekend as the four-star DB from Duluth, Ga., joins an absolutely loaded defensive back haul that includes five-star Elbert Hill and four-star Brandon Lockhart among many others. Word started leaking out over the weekend that USC could land Dyer, an early South Carolina commit who said Georgia was the team to beat, and by Sunday it was done. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH USC FANS AT In the closing weeks before his weekend commitment, Harris had South Carolina and NC State as the two front-runners after things with Ohio State slowed. The high four-star defensive end from Matthews (N.C.) Weddington made it clear throughout his recruitment that he wanted to play with his twin brother, Andrew, so that could have shaped his recruitment even more. The Gamecocks have only eight commitments but six are four-stars so there is a lot more quality than quantity right now. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH SOUTH CAROLINA FANS AT Penn State was an option for the Harris Bros., and Auburn and NC State official visits were scheduled. But South Carolina was a favorite of both throughout their recruitment as it ended with commitments over the weekend. When things slowed down with Ohio State in recent weeks, the Gamecocks jumped up even further. Since the brothers wanted to play together, South Carolina became a great option. This was a surprise commitment over the weekend because the four-star running back from Lancaster, Texas, was tagged to a program much closer to home. Lee had taken a visit to TCU but SMU was really the front-runner in his recruitment. He is from the South Dallas area, he was a main priority for the Mustangs and Lee made it no secret that he was highly interested in the program. Vanderbilt landed a weekend pledge but will have to fight off SMU and others down the stretch. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH VANDERBILT FANS AT After working out at Ole Miss in recent days and spending a lot of time with position coach Randall Joyner, the Rebels offered the 2027 four-star defensive tackle from Memphis (Tenn.) Memphis Academy and he made it no secret they were a front-runner. Pittman said Ole Miss was 'for sure up there' and he didn't waste a lot of time as he was committed to the Rebels just days later. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH OLE MISS FANS AT UCLA pulled off a major recruiting victory over the weekend when the four-star offensive lineman from Vero Beach, Fla., picked the Bruins over Alabama, Illinois, Ohio State, South Carolina and Tennessee. What really pushed UCLA to the front was his visit to Westwood in recent weeks that completely blew him away. He's now become a big-time recruiter for this UCLA class on social media but the in-state schools and programs across the Southeast won't give up. Longhorns softball recruit named Gatorade National Player of the Year
Longhorns softball recruit named Gatorade National Player of the Year Longhorns recruit Hannah wells caps of here high school career with Gatorade National Player of the Year award After winning the first national championship in program history, Texas Longhorns softball is ready to defend its title. They will again have a talented roster next year that will get a boost from some of the nation's best recruits. That includes Hannah Wells, who was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year on Monday. As Coahoma High School won a state title, Wells impressed at the plate and on the mound. She finished the last season of her high school career with a 22-1 record. The future Longhorn struck out 258 batters and posted a 0.44 ERA. When Wells wasn't pitching, she posted a .602 batting average while driving in 75 runs. Before Monday, Wells already had an impressive resume. She is a five-time all-American who ranked in the top 10 in hitting and pitching nationally. She also earned the 2025 Max Preps Texas Player of the Year, according to Texas Athletics. For the Longhorns, Wells play over the last year has only created more excitement about what is in store for her college career. Wells is one of the seven recruits joining a championship-caliber roster. She is listed as the only pitcher in her class and could be a replacement for Mac Morgan, who just wrapped up her senior season. During her time as a Longhorn, Morgan posted a 2.47 ERA in 95 games. Like Wells, she held her own at the plate. Regardless of where Wells plays, she is expected to be an important piece. Her versatility should be an added benefit, as the Longhorns will be able to get her in the lineup in various ways. The Texas native's latest award provides a reminder of how good Wells is as he prepares for the next chapter of her college career. On a team that already includes catcher Reese Atwood and pitcher Teagan Kavan, Wells has the potential to be the next Longhorns star. Follow us on X (formerly Twitter) at @LonghornsWire.
