Karnataka hands over four trained Kumki elephants to Andhra Pradesh
Amaravati/Bengaluru: The government of Karnataka on Wednesday handed over four Kumki elephants to Andhra Pradesh to mitigate man-elephant conflicts in parts of the state.
Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, who is also the minister for forests and environment, received the specially-trained elephants at a ceremony held in Bengaluru.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Forest Minister Eshwar B. Khandre handed over the elephants to Andhra Pradesh forest officials.
Karnataka has agreed to give six Kumki elephants to Andhra Pradesh. However, two elephants could not be handed over on Wednesday due to their health and also due to the fact that their training was not completed. They will be handed over later.
Agreements relating to Kumki elephants, licenses, guidelines for the protection of these elephants and other documents were also given to Andhra Pradesh forest officials.
After performing the sacred Gaja Puja, the Karnataka leaders sent off the Kumkis by waving a flag while Pawan Kalyan received the tuskers by showering flowers.
According to an official statement here, Kumki elephants named Deva, Krishna, Abhimanyu and Mahendra were handed over to Andhra Pradesh.
The Mahouts from Karnataka will stay with the Kumki elephants for two months and train the Mahouts from Andhra Pradesh on their care and other issues.
Speaking on the occasion, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that their government is ready to give more elephants to Andhra Pradesh in the future to meet its requirements.
Pawan Kalyan gave an assurance that he would personally monitor the health and care of the Kumki elephants given to the state. He hoped that the two states would continue their friendly ties.
It was in August last year that forest department of Karnataka agreed to give trained Kumki elephants, as requested by Andhra Pradesh, to overcome the havoc caused by wild elephants by damaging crops and attacking humans.
The decision was taken during the meeting between Pawan Kalyan and Eshwar Khandre in Bangalore.
Pawan Kalyan told media persons after the meeting that the two states agreed to work together for the protection of forests, wildlife and red sander. He said the two sides discussed seven points and reached a memorandum of understanding.
Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that cooperation from neighboring states is essential to prevent human-elephant conflict.
"Our state has the highest elephant population in the country. We have 3,695 elephants," said CM Siddaramaiah.
"Preventing human-elephant conflict can help avoid loss of life and crop damage. With this important objective in mind, six kumki elephants are being transferred from Karnataka to Andhra Pradesh," he added.
Kumki elephants are trained captive elephants used in south India -- especially in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala -- to manage and control wild elephants. They are typically employed by forest departments for various operations.
CM Siddaramaiah stated: "Today, we are handing over elephants to the state of Andhra Pradesh. We have agreed to transfer six kumki elephants. Four are being handed over today, and the remaining two will be sent later."
"These are tamed and trained elephants. We have also provided a month-long training for mahouts from Andhra Pradesh, as proper training is essential to manage man-animal conflict. Training is required for both mahouts and elephants," he said.

"Agreement that caste enumeration should be conducted": Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah after meeting Congress leadership
New Delhi [India], June 10 (ANI): Karantaka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar met with the Congress high command in Delhi on Tuesday to discuss key issues, where they discussed two to three crucial issues, including the caste census and the recent stampede in Bengaluru. Speaking to the media after the meeting, CM Siddaramaiah said that they have accepted the leadership's suggestion to re-enumerate the case census data. 'Discussions were held regarding the caste census as concerns were raised by some organisations, religious heads, and even a few ministers. The report submitted on the caste census has been accepted in principle. There is an agreement that a caste enumeration should be conducted. We have also agreed to this,' he said. He further mentioned that the discussion emphasised that the fresh survey should be completed within 90 days. 'We will conduct a fresh survey. Since the last enumeration was done in 2015-16, there is an opinion that a new enumeration is necessary. Just as we are conducting surveys for Scheduled Castes, we will carry out another enumeration. It was discussed that this survey should be completed within 90 days,' Siddaramaiah said. Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal had earlier confirmed that the party leadership has suggested that the Karnataka government re-enumerate the caste census data. Speaking on the Bengaluru stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 that killed 11 people and left over 50 injured, CM Siddaramaiah briefed the Congress leadership about the action taken by the government. 'We discussed the recent tragic incident and explained the measures we have taken. A magisterial inquiry is underway, and a judicial commission has been appointed, led by retired Justice Michael Cunha. Five police officers have been suspended, intelligence officers have been transferred, and the political secretary has been relieved. We explained these actions, and there is a consensus that the measures taken are appropriate.' Siddaramaiah said. Referring to the stampede at Maha Kumbh Mela earlier this year in which more than 30 people lost their lives, Siddaramaiah said that the stampede should not be politicised. 'The Kumbh Mela incident should be discussed first before addressing this issue. I am not using the Kumbh Mela deaths to defend this incident. When people die, it is human to feel sorrow. This incident should not be politicised.' Siddaramaiah said. (ANI)

"Congress suggested Karnataka govt to re-enumerate caste census data": KC Venugopal
New Delhi [India], June 10 (ANI): After Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar met the Congress top leadership in New Delhi on Tuesday, Congress MP KC Venugopal said that the meeting discussed two to three crucial issues, including the caste census and the Bengaluru stampede. Speaking to the media, Venugopal said that as some people have 'apprehensions' about the caste census data, the Congress top leadership has suggested that the Karnataka government re-enumerate the data. 'Rahul ji, CM of Karnataka, PCC chief of Karnataka and state in-charge met today. Basically, 2-3 issues were discussed. First was the caste census, which the Karnataka government will be going to discuss on June 12 in a special cabinet meeting. The Congress party thinks that whatever the Karnataka Government has done on the Caste Census, it has to be agreed upon in principle. However, there are some apprehensions from some community sections and people about the data. The Congress party has suggested that the Karnataka government re-enumerate within a stipulated time.' Speaking on the Bengaluru stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 that killed 11 people and left over 50 injured, KC Venugopal said that CM Siddaramaiah briefed the Congress leadership about the action taken by the government. 'We also discussed the current political situation, including the tragic incident that happened in Bengaluru. CM and PCC President briefed the leadership about the incident and the action taken by the government afterwards. We are concerned about every single life. We didn't want to get involved already, a judicial probe has been ordered, but we want the probe to be completed in a fixed tenure,' the Congress leader said. 'The Central government's attitude was one of the most important things discussed. They are completely neglecting the state of Karnataka. The Central Plan Allocation to Karnataka is totally unacceptable. They are marginalising Karnataka into a corner. This is an injustice to the people of the state,' Venugopal added. The Karnataka CM and Deputy CM met the Congress top leadership today at Indira Bhawan in New Delhi. Bihar, Karnataka and Telangana have already conducted a caste census in their respective state. Telangana has also implemented a 42 per cent backwards class reservation for people in the state. The Karnataka State Commission for Backwards Classes has also submitted the caste census (socio, economic and educational survey) report to the Siddaramaiah-led cabinet. The caste census report, if released, will be the second by a Congress-ruled state, after Telangana. (ANI)
