Arminia Bielefeld Shock Bayer Leverkusen To Reach German Cup Final

Forbes01-04-2025

Arminia Bielefeld has shocked Bayer Leverkusen to reach the DFB Pokal final for the first time in club history. The 3. Liga side beat the German champion and DFB Pokal title defender 2-1 thanks to goals by Marius Wörl (20') and Maximilian Großer (45+3'). Jonathan Tah's early lead (17') would ultimately not be enough for Leverkusen.
"I am so proud of the team," Bielefeld head coach Michel Kniat said. "The whole region is feeling this. No one will be sleeping tonight.'
It is a historic club. Bielefeld becomes just the fourth third-division club to reach the DFB Pokal finale. The other third-division clubs were Hertha Berlin II in 1994, Energie Cottbus in 1997, and Union Berlin in 2001.
All three eventually lost the final against Bundesliga sides. Hertha Berlin II, Hertha's reserve side, lost to Bayer Leverkusen (1-0), Energie Cottbus fell to Stuttgart (2-0), and Union Berlin was defeated by Schalke (2-0).
Indeed, a lower division side hasn't won the DFB Pokal since Hannover 96 won it while in the 2. Bundesliga in 1993. Kaiserslautern, which reached the final as a second division club last year, won it in 1996 just a week after being relegated to the second division.
In other words, Bielefeld could write history when they face the winner of Wednesday's semifinal between VfB Stuttgart and RB Leipzig on May 24, 2025, in Berlin's Olympiastadion. For the club, it is already a historic night. Founded in 1905, Die Arminia has never won a major trophy or reached the final of a major cup competition.
How did Bielefeld overcome giants Leverkusen? "We defended with a lot of passion, and that was the key,' Kniat said. 'We worked extremely hard. It was great to go into the break with the lead, and in the second half, we kept up the pressure for what was a deserved win.'
The data echoes Kniat's observations. Indeed, at times, it didn't feel like Bielefeld was a club playing two divisions below Leverkusen. The team in blue outworked Leverkusen and had the better chances, finishing the game with a higher xG (1.43 to 0.95) than the visitors.
Leverkusen, which really struggled in midfield, also barely outplayed the 3. Liga side. The game would finish with a pretty even 48-52% split in possession and eight to 13 shots on goal. In terms of passes played, it was also even, with Bielefeld completing 226 of 360 passes versus Leverkusen's 243 of 382.
With all that in mind, Bielefeld deserves the chance to play for the club's first-ever major title in Berlin. It would also qualify Bielefeld for a European club competition for the first time in club history.
Even more critical are the financials. German magazine Kicker reported on Tuesday that Bielefeld's run to the semifinal has already earned the club €7.5 million ($8.1 million). Reaching the final guarantees another €2.88 million ($3.1 million), which would grow to €4.32 million ($4.66 million) should Bielefeld win the final.
The two final participants also receive a share of the ticket sales. As a result, the income from the game could grow to around €12 million ($13 million).
If Bielefeld wins the title, it will qualify for the Europa League league phase. According to Swiss Ramble, Hoffenheim earned €12 million ($13 million) from playing in the Europa League league phase last season. If Bielefeld reached the competition, it would see a similar revenue.
Those are enormous sums for a club fighting for promotion from the 3. Liga. After matchday 30, Bielefeld is in fourth place, one point behind Saarbrücken, which occupies the promotion-relegation playoff spot, and five points behind second-placed Cottbus.

As Bayern Munich gets closer with Jonathan Tah, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are looking to strike

According to a report from Mundo Deportivo (as captured by Football Espana), Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah is getting interest from both FC Barcelona and Real Madrid as he — allegedly — is nearing a deal with Bayern Munich: Barcelona are hoping to make at least a couple of signings this summer, and the first of those to arrive could be Jonathan Tah. The soon-to-be free agent defender has still to decide his future, but at this stage, it appears that his desire is to be reunited with Hansi Flick in the capital of Catalonia. seems to run contrary to the recent reports we have seen emanating from Germany (like here, here, and here), but let's continue: As reported by Mundo Deportivo, Tah is still prioritising a move to Barcelona. At this stage, he has yet to make a decision on his future as he is awaiting a definitive decision from the newly-crowned La Liga champions. Flick is the reason that Tah is waiting for Barcelona. The pair worked together when the 60-year-old was head coach of the German national team, and he is also personally pushing for the Catalans to move for the Bayer Leverkusen defender. For these reasons, Tah is willing to wait a little longer before confirming his future plans. Advertisement Interestingly, FC Barcelona is not the only club from LaLiga eyeing Tah. Real Madrid is also in the mix: Real Madrid are also said to have an interest in Tah, whose current manager Xabi Alonso will be taking the reins at the Santiago Bernabeu from this summer onwards. A move to the Spanish capital is a possibility for the Germany international, but for now, it is more likely that he goes to Barcelona or Bayern Munich. There are some complexities for Tah, though, when it comes to FC Barcelona per Mundo Deportivo's Roger Torelló (via @iMiaSanMia): While Jonathan Tah's move to FC Bayern is considered a matter of time in Germany, sources close to the player have insisted that he hasn't made a decision yet. Tah, who had a verbal agreement with Barcelona but couldn't finalize the move due to Barça's FFP issues, is willing to wait a bit longer for them. Hansi Flick is the main supporter of the move, but Tah is also aware that the coach cannot guarantee his registration, as it is beyond his scope of responsibilities. Even so, Tah is willing to wait a little longer and is keeping Bayern on hold. Barça consider the signing to be complicated, but Hansi Flick is insisting. Bayern Munich still feels like the leader to land Tah, but FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are just the kind of clubs who could at least cause a player to have a wandering eye. Erik ten Hag wants $116M Man Utd outcast to replace Liverpool target Florian Wirtz

Bayer Leverkusen is named as a "club to watch" with regards to the future of Manchester United flop Antony, as the Bundesliga club searches for a replacement for Florian Wirtz. Wirtz is set to leave Leverkusen after deciding that he wants to join Arne Slot's Liverpool, and his departure will leave big boots to fill in Erik ten Hag's squad. Naturally, Ten Hag is being linked with a move for Antony — a player he was roundly mocked for taking to United — with the Daily Mail mentioning Leverkusen as a club who could afford to sign him permanently. Advertisement Antony joined United in 2022 but the Brazilian's acquisition quickly became a stick to beat Ten Hag with, as it soon became apparent that he was not worth the colossal fee that the Red Devils signed him for. Advertisement Despite enjoying a career revival in Spain, he is not expected to return there on a permanent basis as Betis cannot afford to meet United's asking price for the Brazilian. Leverkusen will have plenty of money to spend this summer, with Liverpool alone expected to add at least $200 million to the German club's kitty. Liverpool has already signed Jeremie Frimpong for $39 million, while the Reds could also end up paying as much as $171 million for Wirtz. Liverpool is continuing to work on a deal for Wirtz -Credit:The Reds are continuing to work on a deal to sign the Germany international, after it emerged last month that he had opted to join the Anfield club ahead of Bayern Munich. Advertisement Liverpool will have to smash its transfer record to get a deal over the line, with Virgil van Dijk the club's current record signing after his $101 million move from Southampton in January 2018. Darwin Nunez's transfer fee would have surpassed the Van Dijk fee had all of the add-on clauses in his deal been met, but they have not, and he is expected to leave the club this summer, amid interest from Atletico Madrid as well as clubs in the Saudi Pro League. The mooted $171 million fee would not only make him Liverpool's record signing — it would also make him one of the most expensive signings in soccer history: only Neymar and Kylian Mbappe have moved clubs for bigger transfer fees in the past.

Bruins name ex-forward Marco Sturm as head coach after missing playoffs for first time since 2016

BOSTON — The Boston Bruins hired Marco Sturm as coach on Thursday to help the Original Six franchise get back to the playoffs after missing them for the first time since 2016. The Bruins picked the 46-year-old German to replace interim coach Joe Sacco, who took over from Jim Montgomery in November and led the team to a 25-30-7 record - much of it after a trade deadline roster purge. Sturm, who spent the past three seasons as head coach of the AHL's Ontario Reign and coached Germany to a silver medal at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, is a former Boston player - just like Bruins president Cam Neely and general manager Don Sweeney. 'Boston has always held a special place in my heart, and I know how much this team means to the city and to our fans,' said Sturm, who was a Bruins left wing from 2005-10. 'I've felt that passion as a player, and I can't wait to be behind the bench and feel it again. I'm excited to get to work and do everything I can to help this team succeed.' A three-time Olympian and first-round NHL draft pick who played most of his 14 seasons for the San Jose Sharks and Bruins, Sturm scored 242 goals with 245 assists in 938 career games and is No. 2 on the league's all-time scoring list for players born in Germany. As a coach, he worked as a Los Angeles Kings assistant guiding the Reign, the Kings' AHL affiliate, to a 119-80-11-6 record and three playoff appearances. 'His path - playing for multiple NHL teams, coaching internationally, and leading at both the AHL and NHL levels - has shaped a well-rounded coach who's earned this opportunity,' Sweeney said. 'As a former Bruin, he understands what this team means to the city and our fans. We're embracing a new direction with Marco behind the bench and are confident his energy, standards, and commitment to a competitive, hard-nosed brand of hockey reflect exactly what Bruins hockey should be.' Sacco, a Bruins assistant and former Colorado Avalanche head coach, replaced Montgomery 20 games into this season, but with the team unable to challenge for a playoff berth Sweeney traded away captain Brad Marchand and other veterans, and the Bruins stumbled to a 33-39-10 record overall, tied for the worst record in the Eastern Conference. Only three teams in the league were worse, and CEO Charlie Jacobs said after the season that the results were 'absolutely unacceptable' and apologized to the fans for the performance. 'We owe you a better team, and we aim to deliver a better team,' he said after the season. 'I share your disappointment and, frankly, embarrassment on how poorly things played out over the course of this season.' Boston is the last of eight NHL teams to fill their coaching openings this offseason. Sacco was a candidate for the permanent job, but the Rangers announced on Thursday that he would be joining new coach Mike Sullivan's staff in New York. Others who reportedly received consideration were Washington Capitals assistant Mitch Love, former Chicago Blackhawks coach Luke Richardson and Bruins assistant Jay Leach. Montgomery, 55, was 120-41-23 in two-plus seasons in Boston. The Bruins finished with more than 100 points in each of his first two years - including a record-setting debut, when their 65 wins and 135 points were both the most in NHL history. But the team lost in the first round of the playoffs that season and advanced to only the second round last year. The struggles carried over into an 8-9-3 start this season before Montgomery was fired. He was hired five days later by the St. Louis Blues and was given a five-year contract; the Blues reached the playoffs and lost in the first round in seven games to the Winnipeg Jets. Boston never improved under Sacco. Heading into the trade deadline with a three-game losing streak that left them at 28-28, the Bruins traded Marchand - the only remaining member of their 2011 Stanley Cup championship team - along with forwards Justin Brazeau, Marc McLaughlin, Trent Frederic and Charlie Coyle and defenseman Brandon Carlo. And they left Sacco on the bench to ride it out. The depleted roster lost 10 straight games - the team lost only 12 in its record-setting 2022-23 season under Montgomery - and fell from possible playoff contender to the NHL draft lottery. Despite the disappointment, the Bruins signed Sweeney to a two-year contract extension, with Neely saying it would help to have stability in the front office during the coaching search. 'I am confident in the plan he has followed these past few months - and excited for what's to come for our team,' the former Bruins forward said of the former Bruins defenseman. 'The expectations in Boston have always been clear. It's about winning championships.'
