See the Southern California beaches you'll want to avoid swimming in for Memorial Day weekend
Southern California beaches are certain to get busy with Memorial Day just days away and the start to summer near, but not all beaches boast ocean water you'll want to take a dip in.
In fact, the annual Clean Water Report named three California beaches as some of the country's dirtiest.
So, ahead of the holiday weekend, the Desert Sun is checking which beaches you'll want to avoid swimming at across Southern California. All information regarding beach advisories and ocean water quality was retrieved on May 23, so be sure to check the beach you're headed to for the latest information.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health issued beach area warnings on May 22 for the following places due to bacteria levels exceeding health standards:
Santa Monia Pier, 100 yards up and down the coast from the pier
Castlerock Storm Drain at Topanga County Beach, 100 yards up and down the coast from the storm drain
Health officials say visitors should avoid swimming, surfing and playing in the ocean in the areas under the warning.
For the most up to date information about beach warnings and ocean water quality, visit the county's public health website.
Be sure to check Long Beach's recreational water monitoring website to check for any possible beach warnings in the area. As of May 22, all sampling sites at various Long Beach beaches show that bacteria levels are within state standards.
Hobie Beach in the Channel Islands Harbor has failed to meet state standards for bacteria, and people are advised to avoid contact with the ocean water for a minimum of 50 yards on either side of the posted signs, according to Ventura County's Resource Management Agency's update on May 23.

Two Orange County beaches are under advisories, warning that ocean water bacteria levels exceed state health standards and could cause illness.
The beaches are:
75 feet upcoast to 75 feet downcoast of the Salt Creek at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point
75 feet upcoast to 75 feet downcoast of the Poche Creek at Poche Beach in the Dana Point and San Clemente area

Sixteen beaches between Guadalupe Dunes Beach and Carpinteria State Beach are tested. Sample results from the week of Monday, May 19, find that all 16 beaches have water quality that meet state health standards, according to Santa Barbara County environmental health services.

Avenida Lunar, Coronado

San Luis Rey River outlet to 300 feet south, Oceanside
Children's Pool, La Jolla
Visitors are urged to avoid contact with water. The following beaches are closed due to bacteria levels, and visitors are similarly urged to avoid contact with water in the closure areas:
Tijuana Slough Shoreline
Silver Stand Shoreline
Imperial Beach Shoreline

FAA limits flights at Newark airport for the rest of 2025
June 7 (UPI) -- Arrivals and departures are limited for the rest of the year at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. The restrictions took effect on Friday and limit arrivals and departures to 28 per hour on weekends while airport construction occurs from Sept. 1 through Dec. 31, the Federal Aviation Administration announced on Friday. Arrivals and departures also are limited to no more than 34 per hour during other periods through Oct. 25. "The confirmed reduced rates will maintain safety while alleviating excessive flight delays at the airport due to staffing and equipment challenges," the FAA announcement says. "The early completion of runway construction at the airport that added to the delays will also contribute to a more efficient operation." Similar travel restrictions "paid dividends" by enabling "smooth travel into and out of Newark" over the Memorial Day holiday, according to the FAA. Officials at the federal agency recently met with airline representatives to discuss problems at the Newark airport that triggered long delays and flight cancellations that left many air passengers stranded for hours and sometimes longer. The discussions led to the current flight restrictions while undertaking several improvements at the airport and regionally. The FAA is working to improve operations at the Newark airport by adding three new high-bandwidth telecommunications links between New York-based hubs and the Philadelphia-based terminal radar approach control system for regional air traffic control. Old copper telecommunications connections will be replaced with fiber-optic technology for greater bandwidth and speed, and a temporary backup system to the Philadelphia-based TRACON system will be active while improvements are done. The FAA also is increasing air traffic controller staffing by adding 22 fully certified controllers and five fully certified supervisors at the Newark airport and others in the area. "The U.S. Department of Transportation and the FAA will continue working with all stakeholders to ensure that the airport is a safe, efficient and functional gateway for passengers and air crews," the FAA announcement says.

FAA caps flights at Newark Airport to cut delays through 2025
The Federal Aviation Administration finalized new air traffic restrictions at Newark Liberty International Airport, saying that arrivals and departures would be limited to 34 each per hour through Oct. 25, 2025. Arrivals and departures at EWR will be further reduced on weekends from Sept. 1 through the end of the year to accommodate airport construction. The FAA previously signaled it was planning to reduce traffic at Newark in response to weeks of delays caused by equipment outages and staffing issues that hampered the airport's capacity. "The confirmed reduced rates will maintain safety while alleviating excessive flight delays at the airport due to staffing and equipment challenges. The early completion of runway construction at the airport that added to the delays will also contribute to a more efficient operation," the FAA said in a statement. "Working with airlines and the airport, the limited arrival rate already paid dividends over the Memorial Day holiday with smooth travel into and out of Newark." United Airlines, which operates a major hub at Newark, touted the airport's on-time rate over the previous week. "Newark (EWR) is the most reliable airport in the New York City area this week," the airline said in a statement. United noted that 79% of its departures from Newark were on time between June 2 and June 5, while 88% of arrivals landed at Newark on time, and 90% of the airline's flights departing Newark arrived at their destinations on time. At a press conference announcing the early completion of a runway reconstruction project at the airport, alongside Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, United CEO Scott Kirby said that travelers in and out of Newark will be able to take advantage of great airfare deals this summer. "We did get well behind on bookings because of the perception issues around Newark recently, so that means more seats are available, which means the fares are better than they're probably going to ever be in the years to come, so now's the time to book your vacation if you want to go to Europe or you want to head across the country," he said.
