Chess prodigy Anvi Hinge gets hero's welcome in Indigo flight; video surfaces after Gukesh beats Magnus Carlsen
Chess prodigy Anvi Deepak Hinge received a hero's welcome aboard an Indigo flight when she was returning from the Western Asian Youth Chess Championship 2025 in Bangkok.
The 7-year-old Anvi secured six medals: two gold and four silver, during the championship which was held from 20 to 29 April.
According to the now-viral video, Anvi had already boarded the plane alongside an adult when the pilot made an announcement highlighting the young chess prodigy's achievements
'This little girl is returning after becoming a world champion,' he said. 'She just won the Western Asian Youth Chess Championship 2025.'
Notably, Anvi Hinge has not become a world champion yet.
'Very good,' a passenger shouted out. The announcement was met with loud cheering and clapping from passengers.
This video surfaced online a day after D Gukesh defeated five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen in the ongoing Norway Chess 2025.
Netizens were proud of the 7-year-old and flooded the comment section with blessings for her.
'Wow, champ. Best of luck for the future,' said a social media user.
'Congrats, young champ. May the Almighty shower upon you his choicest blessings…love you loads beta,' added another user.
A user said, 'Proud moment for her parents and the whole Nation. Congratulations, champ.'
While one netizen called her win 'truly remarkable!'
However, one user joked about how the young chess prodigy's achievements will turn into a lecture for other children her age on the flight. 'I'm happy for her... but baaki bacho ko poore raaste mummy papa k taane sunne pade honge.'
India won 31 medals, including 6 Gold, 14 Silver, and 11 Bronze, at the Western Asian Youth Chess Championships 2025. 16 medals were won individually, and 15 were team medals.
In the Under-8 Girls category, other than Anvi Hinge, R Aaranya won three Gold and a Silver medal, while Teesha Byadwal got two Gold, a Silver, and a Bronze.

‘D Gukesh should have lost to Magnus Carlsen': Nakamura mocks reigning World Champion in ‘he saw some ghosts' remark
D Gukesh fell to a defeat against American GM Hikaru Nakamura on Tuesday, in Round 8 of Norway Chess 2025. The World No. 2 thought he would have a boring draw. But Gukesh, after a poor start in the tournament, showcased some stunning chess to stage a comeback in the round-robin format. He began his campaign with back-to-back losses to Magnus Carlsen and Arjun Erigaisi. He beat Carlsen and Erigaisi in Round 6 and 7, and looked like he had found a winning formula. But he sustained a heavy defeat against Nakamura. After the win, Nakamura couldn't help himself, mocking Gukesh for his preparation. Speaking to Take Take Take, he said, 'I played something that was very boring, but luckily Gukesh wasn't ready for it, and he sort of saw some ghosts and went for this whole position with bishop g6 move which I don't know if it's losing but for a human, very very tough to play, so it was a very smooth game, very happy.' The match turned to Nakamura's side on move 18, when Gukesh opted for an unusual path,skipping the expected move, and opted for 18… Rab8. Then it was followed by 19. Qe4, and with 19… Bg6 forced, followed. Then Gukesh's recapture with the wrong pawn gave Nakamura a huge advantage. The World No. 2 responded with opposite-coloured bishops in attacking positions, and got the light squares under his contest, with Gukesh's bishop also standing no chance. Nakamura put immense pressure which saw the reigning World Champion crumble in 50 moves. 'I'm not sure what happened, whether Gukesh just didn't know this bishop g6 move, or what exactly it was, but it was very clear to me that, based on the long think, he didn't like the pawn structure at all,' said the American. Meanwhile, according to PTI, Nakamura also feels that Gukesh should have lost to Carlsen, and labelled his play as horrible. 'It's a very strange term, because his result is very good, but if we're being objective about chess, I think he's played horribly. He should have lost to Magnus… he was completely lost against Arjun (Erigaisi),' he said. 'Other than the first game against me, and maybe the game against Wei Yi, at some point, he was losing; even Fabiano (Caruana), he (Gukesh) was also losing in that game 'So, it's very, very hard to judge what his play is, but when I look at his game, one of the big things that he has, that I would say Arjun and R. Praggnanandhaa don't have, is he's mentally very strong. 'He's a lot less emotional than the other two players, and that has served him very well, especially in this tournament, so it's a mixed bag. I think his defensive skills are very good, like in this game, I thought there were probably three or four moments when I was winning, and then I had to still find more moves to convert, so he's definitely showing very strong strong defensive skills,' he added.

Indian chess stars D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi remain in title contention at Norway Chess 2025 after eight rounds. With only two rounds left, they will aim to topple Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana. Koneru Humpy is leading the women's section ahead of Round 9. read more Stavanger (Norway): World champion D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi have caught the imagination of chess aficionados by queering the pitch for the likes of Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura, as the Indian duo makes Norway Chess title bid when the tournament recommences Thursday after a rest day. With eight rounds completed, and just two more to go, Gukesh – placed third with 11.5 points – and Erigaisi, with 10.5 points, are in contention for the title in a tournament which has never been won by an Indian. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Gukesh, after an unimpressive start in the tournament, has played some tenacious chess to stage a remarkable comeback in the six-player double round-robin tournament. He began with losses in his first two games – against world No.1 Carlsen and Erigaisi. Just when Gukesh seemed to have hit a nice rhythm by beating Carlsen and Erigaisi in Round 6 and 7 respectively, the 19-year-old suffered a massive blow at the hands of Nakamura, who inflicted a morale-shattering blow to the Indian in Round 8 on Tuesday. The rest day would have given Gukesh plenty of time to introspect and chart his next move, given that one more defeat in the tournament could make things virtually impossible for him. Gukesh will take on China's Wei Yi in Round 9, someone who has beaten him in the sudden-death Armageddon tie-break in Round 5. While Wei Yi hasn't enjoyed great success so far in the tournament, he has thrown open the field by beating both Gukesh and Carlsen in Armageddon tie-breaks in the previous rounds. Wei Yi's eight points and sixth position on the table are not a true reflection of his grit and determination, as the Chinese is more than capable of throwing a spanner in the works of Gukesh a second consecutive time in the tournament. Erigaisi, on the other hand, will meet Nakamura in Round 9, and would like to build on the success of beating the American player-cum-streamer in Round 5. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The 21-year-old, playing in his maiden Norway Chess, has been tactful and quick on the board, thanks to his proficiency in rapid and blitz. He has been in winning positions in several games too, especially in Round 7 against Gukesh, but has surprisingly fumbled in the endgames. Though American Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana is leading the field with 12.5 points, and Carlsen is a close second with 12 points, the two have looked vulnerable against the Indians. Gukesh showed he is made of sterner stuff when he defeated Carlsen in a Classical game in Round 6, leaving the Norwegian slamming the table with his fist. In the women's section, world rapid champion Koneru Humpy continues to be the frontrunner so far with 13.5 points and will face Chinese world championship runner-up Lei Tingjie in Round 9, hoping to increase the lead. R Vaishali, with 9.5 points, will take on Spanish International Master Sara Khadem, knowing well that one more defeat will end her title hopes.
