Harry Kewell an isolated figure with injury in Liverpool's ‘Miracle of Istanbul'
Harry Kewell, who was forced off after just 23 minutes with a groin injury, was not part of the festivities which continued late into the night as he was holed up in his hotel room contemplating imminent surgery.
Not only that, he missed the first two goals of the remarkable comeback against AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final as he was deep inside the stadium receiving treatment.
He managed to hobble to the touchline to see Xabi Alonso convert his penalty rebound to complete the comeback from 3-0 down but his injury meant he could enjoy very little of what followed.
'Our doc came running in saying 'It's 3-2 and Alonso's got a penalty' so me and another player jumped off and hobbled out to watch him knock the rebound in,' Kewell, who is making his debut at this year's SoccerAid event, told the PA news agency.
'Anything could have happened in that game. The moment came when Jerzy Dudek saved from Shevchenko which then made you think 'Maybe it could be our night'.'
It was to be their night, winning on penalties with Dudek the hero, but Kewell was not able to join the post-match celebrations.
'I was in my room. I couldn't really move so I was going in for an operation the next day so there wasn't much partying from me,' he added.
'I just had to focus on getting myself right for the next season.'
The former Australia international has described the final as the 'worst night of my life' and 'a personal nightmare' but it made him appreciate being part of something bigger.
Kewell made 12 European appearances in a season beset by injury problems, which began with a torn abductor muscle early in the campaign, and manager Rafael Benitez trusted him enough to give him his first Champions League start since February.
He remains the only Australian to appear in a Champions League final, and in fact has played in two as he was in the Liverpool squad which lost to Milan two years later.
'It's still a very precious memory in my footballing career. The one thing it did teach me was you are part of a team,' he added.
'There are two parts to the story: as an individual my own injury was heart-breaking but that's why you play a team sport and what the team did that night was very special and I'll always be privileged to be part of that team.
'It doesn't matter how well you do as an individual, you need the team around you.
'It was the biggest game I could play in and you want to be part of that but it's not about me, it was about my team and they did an amazing thing that night.'

Kasey McAteer scores as Republic of Ireland and Senegal play out draw in Dublin
Kasey McAteer scored his first international goal for the Republic of Ireland as they played out an entertaining 1-1 draw with Senegal in Dublin. The Irish delivered a performance full of industry in their first-ever encounter with the Senegalese at the Aviva Stadium. Leicester's McAteer and Ipswich's Jack Taylor made their first starts for Ireland with head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson looking at his options ahead of the beginning of the World Cup qualifying campaign in September. Senegal, ranked 19th by FIFA, some 41 places higher than the Republic, named an experimental side with only two starters remaining from their recent World Cup qualifying win over Togo. The west African side started brightly, controlling possession in the early stages and keeping the pressure on Ireland with two corners. However, Ireland grew in stature throughout the first half and opened the scoring through McAteer in the 21st minute when Senegal failed to clear a corner. Ryan Manning crossed and Nathan Collins headed it on to McAteer. His initial header was wonderfully saved by Yehvann Diouf, but the forward kept his composure to control the rebound and fire it home. The Irish stayed on the front foot for the rest of the half, showing good energy as they moved the ball quickly between defence and attack, seeming to rattle the Senegalese, who were defending a 20-match unbeaten run. McAteer, who had run tirelessly throughout, was replaced in the 80th minute as was Smallbone as the Republic turned towards fresh legs. However, Senegal's pressure told when substitute Sarr poked home in the 82nd minute shortly after Kelleher had saved with his feet. Senegal had a free-kick on the edge of the box deep in injury time as tempers flared between the two teams, but Camara failed to get it over the defending wall. The match did not have the feel of a friendly as both Ireland and Senegal went for the win, but ultimately both will be satisfied with the draw.

Postecoglou suggested for Scotland job after Iceland defeat
The national team faced a troubling defeat against the side ranked 74th in the world. Andri Gudjohnsen opened the scoring, before John Souttar levelled things up. Iceland, who only had three shots on target throughout the match, then held on for victory. Speaking post-match, Stewart made a surprise suggestion regarding former Celtic boss Postecoglou live on BBC Radio Scotland. He said: "There's a degree of apathy, and you don't want that. "The manager has said it himself: he views it through to the World Cup, then he feels it would be time to make a change. "And then big Ange can come in." The Australian boss was sacked by Tottenham Hotspur after leading them to Europa League glory just over a fortnight ago. Reflecting on his time at the club, Postecoglou expressed his pride. He said: "When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, my overriding emotion is one of pride. "The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. "Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget." Postecoglou also acknowledged the hard work and dedication that went into achieving success. He said: "That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. "There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible. "We have also laid foundations that mean this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success." Postecoglou is now left without a club after being sacked by Spurs, with his departure from north London coming just over two weeks after he won the Europa League.
