Prime Minister Keir Starmer launches historic inquiry into grooming gangs as survivors break silence

Time of India12 hours ago

British Prime Minister Sir
Keir Starmer
has announced a full statutory national inquiry into 'grooming gangs', following a scathing audit by Baroness Louise Casey. The move reverses months of hesitation and brings hope to survivors who say their suffering was swept aside for too long.
'What matters most is getting justice for the victims,' said Paul Waugh, Labour MP for Rochdale, a key flashpoint in earlier grooming scandals. He welcomed Starmer's decision to back a statutory inquiry, which can compel witnesses and documents, ensuring inquiries are not stifled by local authorities.
Grooming gangs refer to groups of men, often operating in towns like Rotherham, Rochdale, and Telford, who sexually abused and trafficked vulnerable girls, often over many years.

(IICSA) outlined hundreds of failings earlier in 2022, but its recommendations remain largely unimplemented. A local audit by Baroness Casey, completed recently, went further, finding a nationwide pattern of institutional indifference and embedded failures.
Starmer said he 'read every single word' of the audit and would implement Casey's call for a statutory investigation under the Inquiries Act. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper will formally introduce the inquiry in Parliament next week, accompanied by Casey's full report.
What's next
The inquiry will coordinate both national and targeted local investigations, even in areas where local authorities might resist. This structured, legally empowered approach stands to uncover who failed, why, and how to prevent it again.
For survivors like Fiona, it's a long-awaited step toward justice and the chance for their voices to finally be heard.

'Knee on neck': Indian-origin man in Australia, Gaurav Kundi, who was 'attacked' by cops during dramatic arrest, dies

Indian-origin man Gaurav Kundi dies in police custody in Australia. (Photo: 7News) Gaurav Kundi, a 42-year-old Indian-origin man and a father of two, died of 'unrecoverable' brain injury in the Australian police custody, days after he was dramatically arrested from outside his home. During the arrest, Kundi lost consciousness and had to be admitted to a hospital in a critical condition with severe brain injury. Earlier this week, he died when he was surrounded by his family members, 7News reported. Kundi's arrest involved a lot of drama as patrol police thought there was an altercation between him and his wife. But his wife Amritpal Kaur who made a video of the arrest later said that she told the police that he was her husband and that there was no assault, but they were fighting loudly. Despite the wife's plea, she alleged that Kundi was restrained with a knee to his neck by police. She told the cops that what they mistook as domestic violence was just a loud fight between a couple. Kundi was drunk and loud, not violent, she told the cops. 'I've done nothing wrong,' Kundi shouted while Kaur filmed. But when the cop allegedly knelt on his neck and Kundi became unresponsive, his wife got scared and stopped the camera. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like She Found THIS Chat on Her Husband's Phone and Vanished Overnight medalmerit Learn More Undo 'Knee on neck': Indian-origin man in Australia dies in custody, received brain injury during arrest Kundi's arrest and outcome sparked a commissioner's inquiry, where South Australia Police Commissioner Grant Stevens told ABC Radio Adelaide the inquiry would be conducted 'on top of' an investigation by Major Crime and the internal investigation section detectives. 'Just like I got India and Pakistan to make a deal': Trump claims he can end Israel-Iran conflict too

Donald Trump As Israeli airstrikes on Iran entered a third day and the region teetered on the brink of a wider conflict, US President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday, claiming he could bring peace between Israel and Iran just as he had done with other historic adversaries, pointing to his past efforts in de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, 'Iran and Israel should make a deal, and will make a deal, just like I got India and Pakistan to make, in that case by using TRADE with the United States to bring reason, cohesion, and sanity into the talks with two excellent leaders who were able to quickly make a decision and STOP!' As fighting continues in the Middle East, Trump said he's been taking calls and holding meetings behind the scenes. 'Likewise, we will have PEACE, soon, between Israel and Iran! Many calls and meetings now taking place,' he added. The President highlighted other international conflicts he claimed to have intervened. 'During my first term, Serbia and Kosovo were going at it hot and heavy, as they have for many decades, and this long time conflict was ready to break out into WAR. I stopped it,' he said, blaming former President Joe Biden for hurting longer-term prospects with 'some very stupid decisions.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Urologists Urge Men To Try This Breakthrough for ED Bring Back Fast Read More Undo He also cited Egypt and Ethiopia's tensions over the Nile River dam. 'There is peace, at least for now, because of my intervention, and it will stay that way!' Despite escalating Israeli airstrikes and rising casualties in Iran and Israel, Trump said peace is still possible. 'I do a lot, and never get credit for anything, but that's OK, the PEOPLE understand. MAKE THE MIDDLE EAST GREAT AGAIN!' he concluded. Meanwhile, the region remains on edge Trump's comments come amid a sharp escalation between Israel and Iran. Following surprise Israeli strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites on Friday, which killed top generals and scientists, Iran has fired over 270 missiles in retaliation, with 22 hitting Israeli targets. Israel has warned of broader strikes and advised Iranian civilians to evacuate arms factories. Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said that if Israel's strikes on Iran stop, then 'our responses will also stop." He said the United States "is a partner in these attacks and must take responsibility.' Trump doubles down on peace deal Earlier, Trump had also posted that the US was not involved in the Israeli attacks but warned that any Iranian retaliation against the US would result in an American response 'at levels never seen before.' Still, he insisted, 'we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict!!!' Fallout from strikes on nuclear facilities Meanwhile, satellite imagery has confirmed damage to Iran's key nuclear sites in Natanz and Isfahan. Experts say it could take months or more to repair the damage. Israel claims the strikes were preemptive to prevent Iran from building nuclear weapons, something Tehran has consistently denied.

Ahmedabad Plane Crash: DNA Of 45 Victims Matched, Vijay Rupanis Last Rites In Rajkot Tomorrow

Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel on Sunday said that the DNA of 45 deceased have been matched with their relatives, and confirmed that the death toll in the Ahmedabad plane crash stands at 274. The London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 242 passengers and crew, crashed into a residential area near the airport shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12. "Till now, 45 DNA samples have matched. Around 274 people have lost their lives in the heart-wrenching incident," state's Health Minister said. He also said that the funeral of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was among the victims, will be held with full state honours on Monday. Patel stated, "CM Bhupendra Patel informed Vijay Rupani's family about the DNA samples matching as soon as the information was received... Tomorrow, at 11.30 am, the family will receive Vijay Rupani's mortal remains from the Civil Hospital. The mortal remains will be taken to Rajkot by air and reach there at 2. The funeral will be carried out at 5 pm and the last rites will be completed at 6 pm with state honours." The state Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) unit and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) team are working to match more DNA samples. According to Director of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), HP Sanghavi, DNA examination is critically needed to identify the victims of the tragic crash, citing that the extreme heat from the blaze that erupted after the crash had made the traditional method of identification ineffective. Air India on Saturday said that an interim financial assistance package of Rs 25 lakh will be provided to the "families of the deceased and to the survivor" of the tragic crash. In a post on X, the Tata-owned airline stated that the package was in addition to the Rs 1 crore support already announced by Tata Sons. 242 people were on board the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Of the passengers, 241 died in the crash. The lone survivor, identified as Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment.
