Wet bank holiday weather to end record-breaking dry spring in Scotland
WET weather across the bank holiday weekend is expected to end what has been a record-breaking start to spring.
While Sunday and Monday will not be a complete washout, the Met Office said unsettled weather is expected to disrupt a warmer-than-average May.
According to the forecaster, until Friday night, Leuchars in Fife went 34 days without rain, while people in Bradford, West Yorkshire, did not see rain for 31 days.
'It's been very dry but it will change to something more unsettled on Sunday morning,' meteorologist Zoe Hatton said.

'Across the north of the countryside of Scotland is likely to be wet and quite miserable initially.
'A band of rain will be moving eastwards overnight lingering in the far north of Scotland. Elsewhere it's not going to be widely wet.
'There's going to be low cloud in places which could produce outbreaks of rain across the Pennines and across higher ground in the south of England, but the main focus will really be northern Scotland.
'As the day moves on that band of rain will move eastwards and we're going to see showers arriving from the west.
'The most likely places affected will be Northern Ireland, Scotland and the north of England, and some quite frequent blustery showers across parts of the country, but drier further south.'
Temperatures on Sunday are expected to peak at about 15C in Scotland, with highs of 21C to 22C in the south of England.
'As we go into bank holiday Monday we're expecting things to stay fairly similar, with showers arriving from the west heaviest and most frequent across the north and west of the country, in Scotland and Northern Ireland,' Ms Hatton said.
'It's not a complete washout, there will be drier, brighter interludes. It shouldn't feel particularly cold as we go into the new working week.
'Temperatures are expected to start rising by the end of the week, so perhaps feeling a little bit warmer in the sunshine from Friday onwards.'
Forecasters are warning that heavy winds on Saturday night into Sunday could create difficult conditions for campers over the long weekend.
There are no weather warnings in force but the winds could reach 50mph in some northern areas.

It was the 81st anniversary of D-Day on Friday, and in Washington and its surroundings all seemed atmospherically serene, with any sounds of thunder coming from distant and isolated storms, and any possible sight or sniff of smoke resulting from far-off wildfires. Overall it seemed a calm and low-key day, a day of somewhat blurry identity, one that suggested either late spring or early summer. Classifying it more precisely probably depended as much as anything on personal feelings about what makes the seasons, and how and when one gives way to the next. By early evening, Washington had spent hours watching the skies grow dark as what appeared to be a fair facsimile of storm clouds assembled. But as of 8 p.m. no rain had fallen in the city itself. The main accomplishment of the gathering of clouds seemed to be to shield the city from the direct rays of the sun, which are at this time of year at the peak of their power. It was neither a sunny day nor a day without sunshine. Dulles International Airport reported a thunderstorm, and .05 of an inch of rain fell there, between 3 and 5 p.m. Within sight of the airport loomed those towers of cloud known as cumulonimbus, the sort that spread not out but upward, the sky's own skyscrapers, Often they portend thunder and lightning. It didn't seem possible to be certain that a shower was not in store elsewhere in the area. In Washington the high temperature reached 86 degrees, four degrees above the average high for June 6 in the city. It was the warmest of the six days of June thus far, but probably not warm enough to complain about on Friday or any other day. And most of the time the mercury stayed below that, The wind caused little stir. Most of the time it seemed well below 10 mph. Signs of summer could probably be found in the dew points. They spent most of the day in the mid-and upper 60s in Washington, and may have started to suggest some of the necessary humid ingredients of a typical summer day here. And based on published maps, high above the city the faraway fires in Canada, apparently spread a thin canopy of smoke.

Howard Lutnick testified to Congress this week. But the administration did fire meteorologists, and the nation's top hurricane forecasting office is not fully staffed as the season is underway. The NHC, like many other parts of the NWS, has a staffing shortfall currently, with five vacancies at the center in Miami, including at least four meteorologists. None of the NHC positions can be filled due to the federal hiring freeze, though the NWS was able to get an exemption for 126 mission-critical vacancies at other forecast offices around the country. The critical staffing issues — which have meant some forecast offices are no longer monitoring the weather 24/7 or launching twice-daily weather balloons — have raised concerns that forecast accuracy will suffer during this hurricane season. 'We are fully, fully staffed. There are no openings on the National Hurricane Center, zero. It is fully staffed,' Lutnick said before a Senate appropriations subcommittee during hearings on the Commerce Department budget on Wednesday. Lutnick claimed again on Thursday the NHC is 'fully staffed,' and falsely stated local weather service forecast offices are fully staffed in an appearance before the House Appropriations Committee. 'It is fake news and inappropriate to suggest a single meteorologist or hydrologist was fired,' Lutnick said. 'That is preposterous and silly.' The Trump administration cut about 100 jobs at the NWS, including meteorologists and hydrologists, according to a fact sheet from Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell's office. The NWS lost even more meteorologists, including many with decades of experience, from early retirement and other incentives the Trump administration offered in order to reduce the size of the federal workforce. In total, the agency has lost about 560 employees during the course of the administration, bringing total staffing levels below 4,000, according to the NWS Employees Organization. This is about 18% below 'necessary staffing levels' and 33% below 'normal' staffing levels. Many local NWS offices are so short on meteorologists in the wake of Trump administration firings, buyouts and early retirement incentives that the agency has authorized internal transfers to fill critical gaps, in addition to the 126 new hires. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reiterated Lutnick's claims in a Thursday statement: 'The National Hurricane Center is fully staffed to meet the rigorous demands of the hurricane season,' spokesperson Kim Doster said. 'Future positions that may be advertised at the NHC will provide additional support and a deeper bench for our ongoing around-the-clock operations.' A Commerce Department spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment. The hurricane center's staff website shows all but one of its vacancies, which include at least one hurricane specialist, one hurricane forecaster and two meteorologist/programmers. One staff member who took an early retirement offer is still listed on the roster, according to an NWS employee familiar with the matter.
