A Malaysian living abroad has set social media ablaze with a fiery take on food that's dividing netizens across borders.
Brent Farris, a Malaysian who frequently travels between the two countries, says on Facebook that he's been holding in for years — and he didn't hold back.

'Here goes. I'm going to say something quite controversial. If it offends you, I apologize in advance. Ok, I'm not sorry.
'Anything you can find in Singapore (food wise) you can find it in Malaysia for 1/3rd the price and tastes better,' he wrote.
'And, Singapore's national fruit is the durian. I'm sure they love durian, but they don't grow any. Malaysia originated it and the durian from Malaysia is better than any durian grown anywhere in the world. Sorry Thailand.
'There, I said it. Whew that feels like a weight has been lifted. I've been wanting to say this for years,' the caption read.
The post quickly went viral, striking a chord with Malaysians who echoed his sentiments — and drawing the ire of some Singaporean commenters who disagreed with his post.
While some applauded him for 'finally saying what many Malaysians were thinking,' others called the post 'needlessly provocative,' sparking a fresh round of the age-old Malaysia vs. Singapore food rivalry.
One user, Isabel Kang commented: It's just different preferences in seasoning. Malaysians prefer a heavier dose hence the food tastes 'nicer'. Singaporeans are used to a milder, blander palate due to our 'healthier choice.'
'And no, we all know we don't grow any durians commercially and I don't recall it being our national fruit. We have no national fruit. Go get a life.'
'Singaporean here. As much as it pains me to say so, he's right in saying that food in Malaysia is generally (though not always!) better. It certainly is far more economical, which is why so many of us come over just to eat!' Huang Eu Chai wrote.

"Younger generations today are educated, critical, and capable of evaluating leaders based on merit, integrity, and ideas — not sentiment or nostalgia," said Johari, who is the Titiwangsa Umno division chief. The Titiwangsa member of parliament said the younger demographic now constitutes over 40 per cent of the electorate, and their expectations of political leadership differ greatly from those of previous generations. "They are less interested in historical achievements and more concerned with issues such as transparency, integrity, environmental sustainability, and inclusive governance. "They don't want to hear about what we did 60 years ago. "They want to know what we're doing today and what we'll do tomorrow. "They want leaders who are transparent, who can articulate policy, who are not tainted by corruption, and who care about future generations, not just winning elections," said the plantation and commodities minister. He said that if the party fails to evolve, it risks continuing its electoral decline, as seen in the past general elections (from the 12th to the 14th general election), where support dwindled significantly. He also stressed that Umno leaders at all levels — from branch to national — must actively engage with young voters and understand their values, ideas, and aspirations.

Malaysia, Russia to deepen economic ties

MOSCOW: Malaysia and Russia will deepen economic cooperation, particularly in high-potential sectors such as the halal industry, agriculture and food security, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said. Fadillah said bilateral trade between the two countries remained modest in 2024, despite Russia's large economy. Russia ranked as Malaysia's ninth-largest trading partner among European nations this year, with total trade reaching RM11.46 billion (US$2.48 billion). Malaysia's key exports to Russia include electrical and electronic products, machinery, equipment and parts, as well as processed food. 'I invited Russian companies to invest in Malaysia and take advantage of the government's incentives in strategic sectors such as aerospace, agrotechnology, energy, ICT (information and communications technology), the digital economy, Islamic finance and the halal industry,' the Deputy Prime Minister said. He was speaking at a press conference at the end of his four-day working visit to Russia late last night. Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, called for cooperation in agriculture and food security, and proposed joint research and development in fertiliser and pesticide technologies, agro-engineering and food technology. 'I discussed collaboration in higher education and conveyed appreciation to the Russian government for its scholarships to Malaysian students. 'I also proposed that these scholarships be extended to emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, big data and information science, in line with current industrial transformation,' he said. On tourism, Fadillah said Malaysia welcomed a proposal for direct flights between the two countries, which is expected to be finalised soon. However, he noted that Russia had raised concerns over financial transactions, which had to some extent hampered the growth of bilateral trade. He gave an assurance that the Malaysian government, through the relevant agencies, including Bank Negara Malaysia, would continue to facilitate smooth financial transactions between both sides. 'I will present the outcomes of my discussions with Russian counterparts to the Cabinet upon my return to Malaysia. 'In shaa Allah, I am confident that Malaysia–Russia cooperation will continue to develop positively and bring tangible benefits to our country,' he added.

WHAT'S your earliest memory? Mine involves a cockroach, bold as brass, darting across the kitchen floor. I remember the horror, the helplessness, the way it vanished just when I thought I had it cornered. Years later, I find that same feeling creeping back whenever I watch the AGM of another national sports association. The same faces, the same names. Different year, same result. Like roaches, these figures always return. Now, let me be clear. I'm speaking metaphorically. But the parallels are hard to ignore. Cockroaches are survivors. They hide, they adapt, and when the coast is clear, they re-emerge, often stronger, always harder to remove. In Malaysian sports, we've got a similar problem. They're the long-serving officials who may have once had noble intentions but now seem far more invested in holding on to power than pushing the sport forward. Even when they're voted out or claim to step aside, they rarely leave the ecosystem. They linger behind the scenes, take advisory roles, or pull strings quietly, waiting for the right moment to reinsert themselves. And reinsertion is almost guaranteed. Because in our sporting structure, there are few real safeguards. Rarely having term limits, no enforced succession planning. Just endless recycling of the same personalities, many of whom have presided over stagnation, if not outright decline. They thrive in opacity. Where there is little transparency or accountability, these officials flourish. AGMs become battlegrounds not of ideas or progress, but of allegiances, whisper campaigns, and loyal vote banks. The focus shifts from nurturing athletes to protecting egos. They love the titles — president, deputy president, technical chairman. With the right badge and blazer, doors open, perks roll in, and media attention follows. Some haven't laced up a pair of trainers in decades, but you'll spot them at every major tournament, front and centre in team photos, grinning like winners. They chase the limelight, but not the workload. They want the influence, not the inconvenience. To be fair, not every official fits this description. There are dedicated individuals in the system — passionate, honest people who genuinely want to elevate our sports. But far too often, they're drowned out by the noise. The entrenched power players dominate the narrative, and reform-minded voices are pushed to the fringes. And when things go wrong, when medal hauls shrink, when athletes quit, when juniors vanish from the scene — accountability is scarce. There's always a convenient excuse: lack of funding, bad luck, we provided everything, or underperforming athletes. But rarely do we hear, "We failed to lead." We've seen associations spiral into dysfunction because of internal feuds and mismanagement. Coaches sidelined, programmes derailed. Talented athletes caught in a tangle of red tape and unclear selection policies. It's a story that repeats itself, sport after sport. All the while, the public is asked to rally behind teams, wave the flag, and clap politely. But beneath the surface, the foundations are shaky, weakened not by athletes, but by the very people meant to support them. At some point, we need to ask: why do we keep tolerating this? Just as you wouldn't ignore pests in your home, we can't afford to turn a blind eye to the pests in our sporting bodies. Because every year we delay reform, we risk losing another athlete to burnout, another coach to disillusionment, and another generation to mediocrity. This isn't about starting a witch hunt, it's about raising standards. It's about recognising that modern sports need professionals, not personalities. It needs structure, not sycophants. We need real reform: term limits, transparent elections, independent oversight. We need to create a culture where new ideas are welcomed, not viewed as threats. And most of all, we need the courage to say "thank you" to long-time officials and actually mean it as a farewell. Because here's the truth: cockroaches survive because the environment allows them to. They don't need light. In fact, they prefer the dark. They wait, and they persist. But sports? Sports thrive in the light. It thrives when we clean up, open doors, and let those who care, truly care, take the lead. It's time Malaysian sports had that deep clean. Our athletes and our future deserve nothing less.
