America's 10 most dangerous beaches revealed as spring break looms

Yahoo26-02-2025

Spring break is just around the corner, and people will be flocking to beaches around the U.s. to enjoy some fun in the sun. With that, it's important to know which beaches are the most dangerous.
Researchers with Tideschart evaluated 528 beaches across the country to find the 10 most dangerous beaches to visit in America, based on three factors: hurricanes, shark attacks and surf zone fatalities such as rip currents deaths.
Each beach was ranked with a score out of 100 after evaluating each factor.
"With the warmer season approaching and many families planning beach trips, it's crucial to put safety first," said Tideschart founder Ryan Blundell. "Most people do not realize how much changing surf conditions, unpredictable marine life, and severe weather can impact their safety."
According to the study, each of the 10 most dangerous beaches are in Florida. Due to the number of hurricanes that hit the state, each beach was ranked evenly with 126 hurricane landfalls between 1851 and 2024.
New Smyrna Beach on Florida's east coast is the No. 1 most dangerous beach in the country with a total score of 76.92. The beach has recorded 277 shark attacks and 12 surf zone fatalities such as rip currents, according to Tideschart.
The second-and third-most dangerous beaches go to Florida's Laguna Beach and Daytona Beach, respectively.
Laguna Beach has recorded 39 surf zone fatalities and nine shark attacks in its history, while Daytona Beach has recorded 27 surf zone fatalities and 67 shark attacks.
Laguna Beach was given second place for its high number of surf zone fatalities, the most reported across all 528 beaches, according to Tideschart.
How To Survive Rip Currents
Miami Beach took fourth place for its susceptibility to hurricanes, giving it a total score of 46.49.
Fifth place went to Indialalantic Boardwalk on Florida's east coast. Visitors need to be wary of the beach's powerful currents and frequent marine wildlife encounters, with 9 surf zone fatalities and 30 shark attacks in its history.
Cocoa Beach and Palm Beach took the sixth and seventh most-dangerous beaches in the US, with 39 and 35 shark attacks and seven surf zone fatalities at each beach.
The eighth most-dangerous beach has a surprising statistic, with no recorded shark attacks in its history. Miramar Heights Beach is located on Florida's Gulf Coast and has recorded 10 surf fatalities, according to Tideschart.
Cape Canaveral took ninth place with a total score of 40.75.
The 10th most-dangerous beach went to Jupiter Beach Park, Florida, with a final score of 40.37. This beach has reported five surf zone fatalities and 23 shark attacks.
"While shark attacks often dominate the headlines, the real danger on Florida's beaches stems from the ever-present hurricane threat," said Blundell. "Hurricanes cause powerful rip currents and storm surges, which significantly elevate the risk for beachgoers. This is why it is no surprise that all of the top 10 most dangerous beaches in America are in Florida."
Hawaii has the safest beaches in the country, Tideschart reported.
Kalepolepo Beach in Hawaii is reportedly the safest beach in America, with no recorded surf zone fatalities, shark attacks or hurricanes.
How Often Do Tropical Systems Impact The Hawaiian Islands?
Here are the 10 most dangerous beaches' final scores out of 100, according to Tideschart.
1. New Smyrna Beach, Florida – 76.92
2. Laguna Beach, Florida – 67.75
3. Daytona Beach, Florida – 64.47
4. Miami Beach, Florida – 46.49
5. Indialantic Boardwalk, Florida – 44.64
6. Cocoa Beach, Florida – 44.01
7. Palm Beach, Florida – 43.53
8. Miramar Heights Beach, Florida – 41.88
9. Cape Canaveral, Florida – 40.75

Buresh Blog: Hurricane season... June averages... St. Johns Riverkeeper... Most unpredictable cities

To become a part of the First Alert Neighborhood weather station network - scan below &/or click * here *: The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season gets underway Sunday, June 1st. As always - since 2005 - I'll update 'Talking the Tropics With Mike' every day through the season (Nov. 30th). The forecast is for an 'above average' season but, of course, how a season is remembered depends on any landfalls & the intensity & impacts of those landfalls. An 'average' season is 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes & 3 major (Cat. 3+) hurricanes. The first name this season is 'Andrea' (names repeat every 6 years & 'Dorian' was retired from the 2019 season & replaced with 'Dexter'). And so we turn the calendars to June. Summer is here no doubt! It's time to celebrate the St. Johns River! Get Your Feet Wet with St. Johns Riverkeeper! St. Johns Riverkeeper (SJRK) is celebrating its 25th Anniversary throughout 2025! Celebrate by joining SJRK and fellow river enthusiasts for events throughout the St. Johns River Watershed. Click * here * to find a list of St. Johns River activities & clean-ups. 'Tideschart' - credit & link * here * - has come up with a list of the cities with the most unpredictable weather. No surprise - the Midwest is the most difficult to forecast though Florida cities did rate high (unpredictable) for rainfall variability. Oklahoma City has the most unpredictable weather in the US and scores 81.06 out of 100 in this study. The city recorded high variations in rainfall with an average of 0.51 inches a day (the fourth highest overall) and daily wind speed deviations of 4.06 mph (the second highest nationally). Omaha, Nebraska ranks second most unpredictable with 79.77 points. In Omaha, temperature swings were more extreme than any other major city in the study. Average temperature variations in Omaha hit 20.82°F, while maximum temperature changes reached 21.50°F. Omaha was discovered to also be the city most likely to see unexpected changes, with an average wind speed deviation of 4.35 mph on an average Minnesota secured third place with 68.96 points on the unpredictability scale, where people face some of the most drastic temperature changes nationwide. Most notably, the city saw standard deviations of 22.40°F in average temperatures and 23.05°F in maximum temperatures. Kansas City scored 68.61 points and Louisville reached 68.17, rounding out the five cities with the US's most unpredictable weather patterns. Oklahoma saw a second city land in the top ten most unstable weather locations, as Tulsa secured sixth place with a score of 65.76. This was then followed by Indianapolis, Indiana in seventh place with a score of 64.63. Chicago, Illinois ranked closely behind in eighth with a score of 63.74. Rounding out the top ten are two Texas cities, with Arlington receiving 63.43 points, and Fort Worth scoring 62.52. The West Coast tells an entirely different weather story, with the study showing significantly more stable and predictable conditions across major cities. Long Beach, California recorded the lowest score at just 19.85 out of 100, making it the most predictable major US city for weather, where residents rarely need to worry about sudden storms or temperature plunges. Los Angeles followed at 21.49 points, with San Diego scoring 21.75, Seattle reaching 24.72, and Portland recording 27.68. California claimed six cities among the ten most stable weather locations, highlighting the state's consistently reliable climate patterns that make weather forecasting much more accurate. The research examined weather patterns across the nation's 50 highest-populated cities through five different weather measurements. Using figures from the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), the experts anaylzed how much the rain, temperature, and wind speed varied from day to day. Methodology: A total of five factors, which were sourced from the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) were used to compile the index. The factors and their percentage weightings are: Standard deviation of daily precipitation (inches) - 30% weighting Standard deviation of daily average temperature (F) - 20% weighting Standard deviation of daily maximum temperature (F) - 10% weighting Standard deviation of daily minimum temperature (F) - 10% weighting Standard deviation of daily average wind speed (mph) - 30% weighting The raw data for each factor was cleaned, checked, and standardized on the same scale from 0 to 10, where 0 and 10 represent the worst and best values present in the data. A weighting was then assigned to each factor reflecting its importance within the analysis. Once the weightings were assigned, the total score for the factors was calculated, producing an overall index score out of 100 for each entry, upon which the final ranking is based. The standard deviation of a metric is the typical distance from the average of that metric. Most of the data (around 68%) is closer to the average than one standard deviation. The higher the standard deviation, the more the data is spread out and therefore more unpredictable.

If the weekend forecast in the Northeast sounds familiar, that's because it is. More rain and thunderstorms are expected across the region, marking the sixth out of the past seven weekends that precipitation is in the forecast. An area of low pressure is slowly approaching from the southwest Saturday, according to the FOX Forecast Center. For most of the day, the shower and thunderstorm activity will be focused across the interior, leaving those along the Interstate 95 corridor dry with temperatures building into the summer-like 80s. But it won't last long, the heating of the day will fuel the atmosphere and thunderstorms are forecast to develop by late afternoon and work their way toward the big cities by the evening. The nation's heartland, specifically Oklahoma City, has the most topsy-turvy weather in the country, according to analysis completed by Tideschart. The analysis, conducted by the tide and weather forecasting company, ranked the 50 most populous U.S. cities based on climate variables, including daily fluctuations in rainfall, temperature, and wind speed. Thanks to weather patterns that resemble a roller coaster, Oklahoma City topped the list. See the entire list here. A large collection of gold coins, jewelry and other artifacts is now in the possession of the Museum of East Bohemia following a remarkable discovery on the edge of a forest near the Poland border. According to museum curators, the over 15-pound discovery was made in February when two hikers noticed a metallic container protruding from a wall near Zvičina Hill. Inside the two containers were 598 coins, bracelets, a chain with a key and tobacco pouches, alongside several other items.
