Rochester Public Schools expands school-age child care by more than 25%
Apr. 9—ROCHESTER — Rochester Public Schools has surpassed its goal of expanding its school-age child care program over the last year.
The Rochester School Board heard a presentation about the effort on Tuesday, April 8. RPS Director of Community Education Amy Eich described the program as important to helping alleviate the child care shortage, and also as important to the local economy.
"This is one thing we can do ... to alleviate that pressure on families," Eich said, referring to the child care shortage. "Certainly it's an economic engine as well, in terms of freeing up adults to work in the economy."
The program provides child care at 16 different schools, both before and after school.
Between September 2023 and September 2024, RPS added 481 new slots to the program, surpassing the goal of 325, which would have been a 25% increase.
Now, it has an enrollment of around 1,900 students in its school year program, and 1,500 enrolled in its summer program.
Eich told the school board that in addition to responding to the child care shortage, the expansion of the SACC program was meant to coincide with the implementation of new start times in the district.
In January 2024, RPS held an information session that quickly became focused on the shortage of available spots in the SACC program. When describing the process of trying to enroll, one parent at the meeting likened it to the "Hunger Games."
The program has been working on expanding its capacity since then. Last summer, the SACC program announced that it had been able to eliminate its waiting lists.
One of the ways the district has expanded capacity is by relying on high school students, who receive both pay and school credit for their time. Nate Schriever, manager of youth enrichment for Rochester Community Education, said the program has more than 100 high school students working in the program.
Like Eich, Board Chairwoman Cathy Nathan emphasized how important she thinks it is for the district to offer the program to the community.
"We could choose not to offer SACC," Nathan said. "But we do because we know it improves our students' experience (and) our families' experience."

3 underrated HBO Max movies you should watch this weekend (June 6-8)
Fans of Succession will be surprised to see that Jesse Armstrong has returned from his brief hiatus with a new project, Mountainhead. The movie was written and filmed earlier this year. It's now on HBO Max. Now that's efficiency. No one knows how to dump on the rich better than Armstrong. One of the highlights this month is the first four Hunger Games movies. One of the entries, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1, is on this list of underrated movies to watch this weekend. Check out all of our picks below. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014) Looking back at the 2010s, the Hunger Games franchise dominated pop culture thanks to memorable phrases like 'I volunteer as tribute' and the arrival of Jennifer Lawrence as an A-list star. The first two movies are significantly better than the final two in the quartet. That being said, Mockingjay — Part 1 is arguably the most politically charged of the four movies. After escaping the arena in Catching Fire, Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) is transported to the underground District 13, where the rebels prepare their attack against the Capitol. Katniss must embrace her Mockingjay identity and become the symbol of hope. The Hanging Tree scene and the final cliffhanger with Peeta are two of the top 10 moments of the franchise. Stream The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 on Max. Tangerine (2015) Sean Baker became the talk of the town this past year with Anora. The off-the-rails dramedy won five Oscars, with Baker becoming the first person to win four for one movie. With Baker's Oscar win still fresh, revisit Tangerine, the movie considered by many as his breakthrough. Like most of Baker's protagonists, Tangerine features sex workers at the center of the story. Sin-Dee (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) is a trans sex worker fresh out of a short stint in prison. After finding out her pimp cheated on her, Sin-Dee and fellow trans sex worker Alexandra (Mya Taylor) set out on a journey across Los Angeles to find him. Tangerine highlights Baker's best qualities — do-everything filmmaking, innovative style, visual flair (shot on iPhones), and expertise in balancing comedy with drama. Stream Tangerine on Max. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009) Before he investigated the Yellow King and piloted a mission across the galaxy, Matthew McConaughey was Mr. Rom-Com. Ghost of Girlfriends Past is the final movie in his rom-com run before taking a break to reevaluate his career. In this interpretation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, McConaughey plays Connor Mead, a playboy bachelor who holds multiple relationships with women at once. The day before his brother's wedding, Connor runs into Jenny Perotti (Jennifer Garner), the one who got away. After making a fool of himself, Connor encounters the spirit of his late uncle Wayne (Michael Douglas), who says he will be visited by ghosts of his romantic past, present, and future. Dickens' fans can rest easy knowing Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is not better than its source material. However, the B-movie is a charming showcase for McConaughey and Garner. Miley Cyrus Addresses if ‘Flowers' Dress Is Jennifer Lawrence Diss
Two years and a few Grammys later, finally addressed the theories behind her 'Flowers' music video outfit, the infamous gold dress. Fans believed it was a reference to Jennifer Lawrence's gown from the 2012 'Hunger Games' premiere. The singer, who has openly talked about her healing journey, clarified there's no bitterness between them. Popular belief suggested that the hit track was Cyrus' breakup anthem after her 2020 divorce from Liam Hemsworth, Lawrence's co-star in the film series. Theories claimed that the dress was a dig at the Oscar-winning actor amid rumors of a cheating scandal surrounding her and Hemsworth. Miley Cyrus settled the dust surrounding her 'Flowers' outfit, clarifying that there are no tensions between her and Jennifer Lawrence. Fans had long speculated that the close resemblance between the gold dress Cyrus wore in the initial scenes of her music video was a jab at the actor. These theories surfaced against the background of a rumored cheating scandal between Lawrence and the singer's now-ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth. The two actors have previously starred together in the popular 'Hunger Games' films. Last week, the Grammy winner squashed all rumors, making it clear that the dress was, in fact, not a diss at Lawrence. She was signing autographs before her appearance on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' when entertainment reporter Melanie Miller brought it up. Miller shared a clip of the moment on her TikTok @itsmelaniemiller, as she asked, 'Miley, was your 'Flowers' dress a reference to Jennifer Lawrence?' Cyrus, who appeared bold and stylishly dressed for the talk show, responded, 'No, but I loved that dress of hers.' Besides the gold color, Miley Cyrus and Jennifer Lawrence's outfits had uncanny similarities, including the cutouts. Although the latter's dress had cutouts in the back, Cyrus' look completely bared her toned abs. According to Page Six, Lawrence had also addressed the 'coincidence' while talking to Andy Cohen on his talk show. 'I just assume that was, like, a coincidence,' she told Cohen during a 2023 episode. The star further denied any romantic involvement with Hemsworth, calling it 'not true' and a 'total rumor.' Originally reported by Nikita Mahato on Reality Tea. The new ‘Hunger Games' movie is holding an open casting call—and TikTok's wacky auditions do not disappoint
If you've ever fancied your chances in the Hunger Games, now you have the opportunity to volunteer as tribute. Lionsgate just announced an open audition call for a minor role in the upcoming prequel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. 'To audition, show us your best: act out a scene, perform a song, or surprise us with something completely new,' the movie's X account shared last week. 'All talents welcome. No previous experience necessary.' Many fans and budding actors are now eagerly taking their shot at being a part of the beloved movie franchise. After all, Rachel Zegler, who starred as Lucy Gray Baird in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, landed her breakout role through an open casting call. However, if the producers were hoping the internet would take the auditions seriously, they clearly haven't spent enough time on TikTok. A cursory scroll through the hashtag #SOTRCastingContest sees everything from creators pretending to be a tribute running from the cornucopia in the games, to getting into character as a cleaner in the Hunger Games arena. One TikTok creator performed a dramatic retelling of Hunger Games main character Katniss' monologue from Mockingjay Part One, but in the voice of White Lotus star Jennifer Coolidge. (Perfection.) Another TikToker proved she had the acting chops for the role of 'the potato that Beetee works on,' while a third auditioned for the role of 'one of the goose eggs katniss bring haymitch in the end of SOTR.' Yet another TikToker offered their interpretation of the supporting role of 'President Snow's milk'—'Can't wait to see you in the movie,' one person commented. 'They're gonna regret that open casting call,' another added. Serious or not, there is still time to get your audition in before entries close on June 6, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. PT. The chosen actor will join Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Ralph Fiennes as Coriolanus Snow, Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy, and Maya Hawke as Wiress in the Haymitch-focused prequel set to hit screens November 20, 2026. Entrants must be a U.S. resident and over the age of 18. May the odds be ever in your favor.
