US secures release from Belarus of Minsk-born American, US official says
WASHINGTON, April 30 (Reuters) - The United States has secured the release from Belarus of an American who was arrested three years ago in Moscow, a senior U.S. official told Reuters on Wednesday.
Youras Ziankovich, a 47-year-old naturalized American who was born in Minsk and lives in Texas, was released across the border of Belarus into Lithuania and is on his way home, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

In April 2021, Ziankovich was picked up while having lunch in Moscow. He was hooded, handcuffed and driven to Belarus, where he was tried in secret by a Minsk court and sent to prison for allegedly plotting a coup, sources have told Reuters in the past.
The U.S. official said the Lithuanian government and the U.S. embassy in Lithuania played a role in securing the release of Ziankovich, who the U.S. considered wrongfully detained.
U.S. President Donald Trump has made a concerted effort to bring back Americans held around the world, tasking U.S. special envoy Adam Boehler with much of the work. The official said Ziankovich was the 47th detainee released by a variety of countries around the world since Trump took office on January 20.
The official said the release was a positive sign from the government of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In addition, the official said an American who had been held in Kuwait was returning to the United States on Wednesday. Tony Holden was part of a group of 23 Americans detained in Kuwait and pardoned in March.
Holden was in Kuwait as a military contractor and was detained on minor drug-related charges.

Sir Keir Starmer has met the US commerce secretary as the Government continues to push for its American trade deal to come into force. The Prime Minister dropped in on a meeting between Howard Lutnick and Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds in Downing Street on Tuesday. Mr Lutnick was in London for talks with China on resolving the trade war between Washington and Beijing, and Mr Reynolds took the opportunity to meet him in person to push for the UK-US trade deal announced last month to be implemented as soon as possible. The meeting follows talks between the Business Secretary and US trade representative Jamieson Greer in Paris last week. Under the terms of the agreement announced by Sir Keir and Donald Trump, the US will implement import quotas that will effectively eliminate tariffs on British steel and cut the levy on vehicles to 10%. But the deal has yet to be implemented and tariffs on both steel and cars remain at 25%, although the UK has been spared the increase on steel duties to 50% that Mr Trump imposed on the rest of the world last week. In a post on social media, Mr Reynolds said he had discussed 'progress on our trade deal – including UK autos and steel' with Mr Lutnick. UK officials remain hopeful that the deal will be implemented soon, but Tuesday's meeting does not appear to have moved the issue beyond both sides agreeing the need to move quickly. Speaking in the Commons last week, Sir Keir said he was 'very confident' that tariffs would come down in line with the deal 'within a very short time'. Implementing the deal will require the UK to pass legislation, likely to involve regulations rather than a full Act of Parliament, while the US will also need to create a legal mechanism to bring steel and vehicle quotas into effect.

President Donald Trump compared the Los Angeles protests to a foreign 'invasion' as California's governor asked a court to block him from using the military. Speaking at a military rally in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Trump said that he deployed 'thousands' of National Guard troops as well as Marines to protect law enforcement in LA. A federal judge set a hearing date on Thursday on Newsom's request to stop Trump from using the troops.
