This Labrador City senior loves marathons - he's finished each of the world majors

CBC04-05-2025

A Labrador City man has joined an elite club of runners by completing all six of the world's major marathons.
Elliott Rowe recently completed the Tokyo Marathon, with a time of 5:38:20. He's already completed the other major marathons in Boston, Chicago, New York, Berlin and London.
It's a challenge he took on later in life, joining a Labrador West running club in 2010, and completing the Tokyo marathon at age 70.
"I started doing my runs leading up to a half marathon, and I was doing fairly good, I must say," Rowe said, as he recalled his initial training.
"I was up for the challenge, so that's what I did. Trained for the marathon, and my goal was basically four hours."
Rowe finished his first marathon with a time of 3:56:52, and later checked off a bucket list item with the completion of the Boston Marathon in around four hours and four minutes.
"That got me, more or less, addicted," he said.
"It's the feeling you get when you finish."
Rowe has since completed 15 more marathons.
He said the feeling never gets old.
Tokyo proved a challenge, he said, given hot conditions and a fall in January. However, he pushed through.
"I persevered, and I was so happy when I finished [at] the finish line. They put the six-medal medallion on you," he said.
The six medals represent the completion of each major marathon.
Rowe said if other runners have aspirations to complete a marathon, it's important to ease your way into it by gradually building up distance and training over time.

Russell-Rowe's goal pushes Columbus Crew to 1-1 draw against feisty CF Montreal

MONTREAL (AP) — Jacen Russell-Rowe's goal leveled the match at a goal apiece and Columbus fought off potential defeat playing to a 1-1 draw against CF Montreal on Wednesday night. Russell-Rowe scored his fifth goal of the season at the 63rd minute when he took advantage of an open goal with Montreal keeper Jonathan Sirois out of position outside the box after he failed to clear a Russell-Rowe ball. Russell-Rowe just missed the game winner at the 82nd minute when Sirois denied him with a diving save keeping the game tied. Luca Petrasso put Montreal ahead at the 29th minute when he took a back-heel pass from Prince Owusu and fired a clean, left-footed shot from the left side of the box. Owusu's assist was even more impressive factoring that he slipped near the middle of the box. Owusu recovered and took the center from Fabian Herbers to set up Petrasso. Columbus (7-1-5) entered Wednesday's match tied atop the Eastern Conference standings with FC Cincinnati with 25 points. Cincinnati's 1-0 win sent it to the lead in the east with 28 points now two points ahead of the Crew. Montreal (1-8-5) sought its second straight win. ___ AP soccer:

Petrasso scores, CF Montreal settles for 1-1 draw against Columbus Crew

MONTREAL – Luca Petrasso scored his first MLS goal, but CF Montreal settled for a 1-1 draw after taking a first-half lead against the Columbus Crew on Wednesday. Prince Owusu provided the assist on Petrasso's opening goal in the 29th minute for Montreal (1-8-4), which ranks last in the Eastern Conference but won its first match of the season 1-0 at New York City FC last Saturday. Canadian international Jacen Russell-Rowe replied in the second half for Columbus (7-1-5), led by former Montreal coach Wilfried Nancy. The Crew, who are second in the East, rested top scorer Diego Rossi and midfielder Sean Zawadzki. Interim Montreal head coach Marco Donadel earned his first MLS victory Saturday in his seventh regular-season match since the club fired Laurent Courtois on March 24. Montreal also avoided a 12th consecutive match without a win to start an MLS season, which would have set a new league record. Petrasso carried the brief momentum and gave Montreal a 1-0 lead with a beautiful goal at Stade Saputo. Fabian Herbers crossed from the right side of the pitch into the box before Caden Clark played decoy, letting the ball roll to Owusu. The German forward then faked a shot and played a back-heel to Petrasso, who exploded into the box and blasted a low shot past Crew 'keeper Patrick Schulte. Toronto native Russell-Rowe tied the game in the 63rd minute, capitalizing on a blunder from Dawid Bugaj for his fifth MLS goal of the season. Montreal's right back played the ball to an awkward area to force 'keeper Jonathan Sirois well out of the box for a sliding clearance. Russell-Rowe blocked the attempt before slotting the ball into an empty net. Sirois denied Russell-Rowe a brace in the 82nd when he stretched out his arms to make a miraculous save with the Columbus forward just metres from the goal. The Crew led with 14 shots to four for Montreal, including four to two on target, while holding 58 per cent of possession. Petrasso's goal woke up the crowd in an otherwise quiet first half. The opening 45 minutes featured seven shot attempts — five from Columbus, two from Montreal — and one shot on-target from each side. Neither team made an attempt until Columbus' Daniel Gazdag sailed a shot well over the bar in the 17th minute. Columbus almost equalized in the 42nd minute when Joel Waterman's misplay near the touchline led to a Grade A chance. Nathan Saliba, however, saved a surefire goal by Gazdag's shot from the penalty area.
