Club World Cup 2025: Vinicius stars as Real Madrid beat Salzburg 3-0 to book round of 16 spot
Real Madrid booked their place in the round of 16 at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 with a confident 3-0 win over Red Bull Salzburg in their final Group H match. The result means Madrid will now face Juventus in Miami next Tuesday.
Vinicius and Valverde lead from the front
Real Madrid went ahead in the 40th minute when Vinicius Junior latched onto a pinpoint long ball from Jude Bellingham, dribbled past Joane Gadou and calmly finished past Salzburg keeper Christian Zawieschitzky. Moments later, Arda Guler's pass found Vinicius again, and the Brazilian set up Federico Valverde with a clever backheel for a sharp second goal right before halftime.

Even without Kylian Mbappe, who missed another game due to stomach illness, Madrid had enough firepower. Vinicius looked sharp throughout and made a big impact on the left side.
RB Salzburg fall short despite equal shot count
Although Salzburg matched Madrid in shot count with 12 attempts each, they couldn't match their finishing. Baidoo came close in the second half, but Bellingham was alert to block his goal-bound shot with Thibaut Courtois beaten. Salzburg's hopes of qualifying ended after Al Hilal defeated Pachuca 2-0 in the group's other match.
Gonzalo Garcia seals the result, Madrid march on
Madrid rounded off the win in the 84th minute when Gonzalo Garcia finished a tidy move to score the third. It was the team's second straight multi-goal win after drawing with Al Hilal in their opener.

Next up for Real Madrid is a high-profile clash with Juventus in Miami. Manchester City, Group H winners, will face Al Hilal in Orlando.

Inter Miami vs PSG, FIFA Club World Cup: Lionel Messi and Co. prepare for Luis Enrique test
Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and their Inter Miami teammates took the field at their practice facility Thursday for another training session. There wasn't much different about what they did. Dribbling drills. Some laughs. Interactions with coaches. But this training was more important than most. In a few days, Inter Miami will play one of the biggest matches of its five-year club history when the Herons take on French juggernaut Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup round of 16. The storylines will be plenty. Inter Miami will be a heavy underdog against Paris Saint-Germain, winners of last month's Champions League final in a 5-0 thrashing of Inter Milan. It will be uncharted territory for Messi, who rarely has in his decorated career entered a match as anything other than the favorite. It will be the first time Messi faces his former club since his exit from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023 after two seasons. He also will be facing his former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique, now the coach of PSG, who has had a big influence on Messi and several Inter Miami stars. Messi was coached by Enrique for three of his 17 seasons with Barcelona. The Spanish coach led Barcelona from 2014 to 2017. He won nine titles, including two La Liga trophies, three from Copa del Rey and one Champions League. Messi, Suarez and Brazilian star Neymar played together under Enrique for three memorable seasons, forming the famed 'MSN' trio that combined for 364 goals and 173 assists. 'He has been very important to my career,' Suarez said of Enrique, 'what I learned from him and just being around him. I had a competitive DNA before I played for him, but he upgraded it even more.' Miami's Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets also played for Enrique, and coach Javier Mascherano considers him a great friend. 'I have said this many times, but Luis Enrique is the best coach in the world,' Alba said after Miami's draw with Palmeiras on Monday, 'not only just as a soccer coach, but also in the way he manages the whole group, which is spectacular. He's a phenomenon. We'll meet him and hug him, but when the referee blows the opening whistle, we're going try to beat him, which is what all of us here are trying to do.' Mascherano, 41, also played alongside Messi, Suarez & Co. when Barcelona won the treble under Enrique in 2015. 'I have a special relationship with him,' Mascherano said. 'I have a special relationship with his family. Obviously, it will be very special facing him. It will be an honor for me facing a great coach. One of the greatest coaches I've had in my career.' The knockout stages of the Club World Cup begin Saturday, and Inter Miami's showdown with PSG is Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Despite entering the tournament on somewhat of a slump, Miami became the only Major League Soccer team to advance to the Club World Cup round of 16 after playing Palmeiras to a 2-2 draw earlier this week, finishing runner-up to the Brazilian club in Group A. That was after the Herons secured a 2-1 victory over two-time European champion Porto on a trademark free kick by Messi, who along with his longtime teammates has driven Miami's belief that it can make a statement on the global stage. ALSO READ | Anger makes Messi more dangerous: Mascherano Suarez noted how important advancing to the knockout stage was for the club's trajectory, but the Herons know the odds for Sunday's matchup. They know they'll be the underdogs. They insist they're ready for the challenge. 'Now that we are facing likely the best team in Europe — the Champions League champion — we will try to maintain the same commitment and unity and play a great match,' Mascherano said. 'If there is something this sport has proven is that anything can happen in any match. And who's to say that Sunday will (not) be our day. Sometimes, things happen.'

Palmeiras vs Botafogo, FIFA Club World Cup: Estevao has unfinished business ahead of Chelsea move
While Chelsea have used the Club World Cup to blood several new faces, there is another thrilling young talent at the tournament on a farewell tour with his current side before heading to Stamford Bridge. Liam Delap, Dario Essugo, Andrey Santos and Mamadou Sarr all made their Chelsea debuts during the group stage in the United States. Meanwhile, 18-year-old winger Estevao Willian is with the Palmeiras squad preparing to take on Botafogo in an all-Brazilian tie in the last 16 in Philadelphia on Saturday. Chelsea agreed a deal just over a year ago with the side from Sao Paulo, agreeing to pay a reported total of 57 million euros ($66.7m) including bonuses to secure the services of the teenage prospect -- he will move to England in time for the new Premier League season. 'It is very difficult. I am going to be fulfilling a dream but for now I have to focus on the work I have to do here,' he told Brazilian media earlier this week when asked about his impending transfer. 'The closer it gets, the more the anxiety sets in and the butterflies flutter in my stomach.' One of the leading scorers in the Brazilian league last season as Palmeiras finished second, Estevao also won the Golden Ball award for the best player in the championship -- a remarkable achievement when he was still just 17. ALSO READ | Anger makes Messi more dangerous: Mascherano Here is a fleet-footed winger in the mould of Neymar, a player with dazzling skills who likes to come in from the right flank onto his left foot. He made his debut for the senior national team in a World Cup qualifier against Ecuador last September and was even given a first start for Brazil against the same opposition on Carlo Ancelotti's debut as coach earlier this month. 'I see what everyone sees, a special player with extraordinary talent,' Ancelotti said of the youngster, who Neymar labelled Brazil's next 'genius'. After starring for Brazil he headed to the Club World Cup with Palmeiras, who qualified for FIFA's expanded tournament thanks to their Copa Libertadores triumph in 2021. Messinho That was the year Estevao joined Palmeiras from the youth ranks of Belo Horizonte side Cruzeiro, the club where the great former Brazil striker Ronaldo first made his name. Estevao made his senior bow for the 'Verdao' (Big Green) aged 16 in late 2023 and played alongside Endrick, another Brazilian teenage starlet who is now at Real Madrid. Fast forward to today and Estevao -- who is principally a right-winger but can also play in a central attacking midfield role -- has started all three of their matches at the Club World Cup so far wearing the number 41. Palmeiras drew with FC Porto in their opening game before beating Al Ahly of Egypt and then producing a late fightback from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Inter Miami. That game allowed Estevao to come up against his idol, Lionel Messi -- he swapped shirts with the Argentine at half-time. 'Incredible, sensational. I have watched him play since I was little. I choose him when I'm playing video games. It was such a pleasure to play against him,' Estevao, who is even nicknamed Messinho, said later. That result allowed them to finish top of Group A and set up the meeting with domestic rivals Botafogo -- if they win that, and Chelsea beat Benfica later the same day, Estevao will come up against his future employers in the quarter-finals in Philadelphia on July 4. 'A lot of people are asking me why we chose Chelsea, but they don't understand how much Chelsea wanted me, and how much belief they have in my potential,' Estevao wrote in an article for the Players' Tribune website published on his 18th birthday in April. 'Those people don't know about the project they presented to us. To a young player, these things matter a lot, and I know we've made the right decision to go to London. 'Until then, I simply want to enjoy these last few months at Palmeiras.'

Vinicius Junior scores and assists in Real Madrid''s 3-0 win over Salzburg to advance in CWC
Vinicius Junior scored a goal and assisted on another in Real Madrid's 3-0 win over Salzburg that secured the Spanish powerhouse first place in the Club World Cup's Group H and a spot in the round of 16. Vinicius gave the 64,811 soaking wet fans at Lincoln Financial Field something to cheer for by scoring on a left-footed shot right outside the penalty box in the 40th minute. Jude Bellingham left Vinícius in position to score with a breakaway pass that took advantage of the wet field conditions caused by the rain. Eight minutes later, a deflected pass by Mamady Diambou left Vinícius one-on-one against Joane Gadou inside Salzburg's penalty box. Having no angle to shoot, Vinícius delivered a backheel pass to Federico Valverde that left the Uruguayan wide open to score from 10 yards out. Antonio Rüdiger suffered an apparent hamstring injury in the 60th minute after completing a long sprint down the right wing. He continued playing, but was subbed out six minutes later. His availability will be one to watch for Real Madrid's upcoming game as they are thin at the center back position due to multiple injuries and a suspension to Raúl Asencio. Gonzalo García put the game to bed in the 84th minute with a chip shot after a counterattack he initiated by stealing the ball from Gadou in midfield. With the win, Real Madrid became the ninth European team to advance to the round of 16. From the 12 European teams in the tournament, only Atlético Madrid, Porto, and Salzburg were eliminated in the group stage.
