Workplace interruptions occur every 2 minutes, a report estimates. Here's what experts say

Technology is helping people get work done more efficiently, but having constant interruptions during the day can hurt productivity, say workplace experts.
'I think we just have to be very cognizant about using technology,' said Margaret Yap, associate professor at the department of human resources management and organizational behaviour at Toronto Metropolitan University in Toronto, in a Zoom interview with CTVNews.ca on Monday.
'We should use technology to our benefit to help us do our work and try to mitigate the negative consequences.'
Work interruptions can be frequent; a new Microsoft report found that employees are interrupted by a meeting, email or chat an average of 275 times once every two minutes during work hours each day. Interruptions also include smartphone app notifications, phone calls and in-person conversations.
Technology has been more beneficial for workers and companies than harmful, Yap said. At the same time, it's important to respect people's time and not expect 'instant responses' unless it's urgent, she added.
'I think we as humans, as workers and managers, we should know how to use (technology),' Yap said, noting that the interruptions can prevent people from doing work, affect the quality of work and create stress.
'Technology allows us to do a lot of things that we couldn't have done before, but we still have to be the drivers to make sure that we are using technology to help us and not to hinder our productivity and creativity.'
Impact of interruptions
Constant interruptions can affect employees' mental health, making them frustrated and anxious even outside of work, according to Karen MacMillan, assistant professor in organizational behaviour at the Ivey Business School at Western University in London, Ont.
In a video interview with CTVNews.ca on Monday, MacMillan says turning off technology for certain periods can help people not only focus but also come up with good ideas, such as when taking a walk.
She adds that managing your attention in a way that helps you perform tasks more effectively can provide a 'better mental mindset' at work and at home.
MacMillan says while people may think they're good at multitasking, it's important to understand the types of interruptions that they can handle.
'If you ask people, 'are you good at multitasking?' They would say yes, but we're actually not, especially when the different things we're trying to do at the same time use the same parts of the brain,' she said.
Building boundaries to prevent too many interruptions and gain focus is important, MacMillan says.
'Our attention is one of the most important things we have, and all these interruptions are kind of scattering our attention,' she said.
'So we need to build walls. Maybe I have certain periods of the day where I turn off all notifications. Maybe I put my phone in another room. Maybe I don't have my headphones on, so I can't hear the pings, or I turn it off, so I can't see them as I'm working.'
Another strategy MacMillan suggests is putting a timer on for, say, 25 minutes, when you can focus with no interruptions from email and messages. If you have a coworker who often interrupts you during work, you can schedule times to meet when you're both free, she said.
'So now it's structured time and I'm managing it rather than just letting the flood hit me,' MacMillan said.
It's important for leaders to take action, as well.
'It would be wonderful if leaders took the lead in this and actually set up some norms for a group of employees around how they're going to be more focused,' she said, adding the first step would be for a leader to talk to employees to see if they feel that they're getting inundated with interruptions.
'If there are a significant number of people who are feeling this, then maybe the leader can set times when there are no meetings, when there are no interruptions, when doors can be shut, and people can be uninterrupted, but also open up times when there are interactions with employees, when it's OK to have personal conversations and connect to each other.'
Even with the harmful effects of too many interruptions, Scott Schieman, professor of sociology at the University of Toronto, said the matter could be a 'double-edged sword,' with sitting and focusing on work for too long having downsides for some people.
'One set of interruptions can be beneficial for some people, but also problematic,' he said in a video interview with CTVNews.ca on Monday. He said research showed people complained about missing the interactions with coworkers when they worked remotely and those back in the office complained about colleagues often chatting with them.

That impressive performance beats the major indexes by a wide margin. Maybe it's time for investors to take a closer look at this business. Strong fundamentals The stock that Pershing Square made a big investment in is Uber (NYSE: UBER). When the hedge fund first bought shares in January, the stock had just come off a disappointing 2024 that saw the share price dip 2%. After that kind of upsetting performance, Ackman still was impressed with Uber's strong fundamentals. Those fundamentals are worth highlighting. Growth is a key part of the Uber story, even though it's a global scale platform. Revenue was up 14% in Q1 (ended March 31), driven by double-digit gross booking gains in both the mobility and delivery segments. It's encouraging to see both parts of Uber's business registering meaningful growth, particularly in the uncertain economic environment. Another positive development deals with Uber's profitability. The company generated over $1.2 billion in operating income just in the last three months, highlighting how financially sound it has become. For an indication of just how much Uber has evolved, understand that in Q1 2019, the business posted a massive $1 billion operating loss. The management team is optimistic. They expect adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) to increase at a "high 30s% to 40%" compound annual rate between 2024 and 2027. Competitive positioning Uber's most defining characteristic is probably that it benefits from a powerful network effect. As more riders come to the app to book a trip, drivers who are looking to boost their income will follow because there is more of an opportunity to make money. With this added capacity, Uber becomes more valuable to riders. It's a positive feedback loop. That network effect underscores Uber's remarkable competitive position. This is becoming more evident with the rise of autonomous vehicle (AV) technology. Uber's direct relationship with riders, in particular, makes it a very valuable partner for AV firms looking to achieve faster adoption. Of course, it benefits Uber by giving it a low-risk, capital-light avenue to get into this space that just might be the future of transportation. Uber is one of the rare businesses whose name is used also as a verb. This highlights how well the service resonates with people. Alphabet 's Google, Airbnb, and Netflix are other prominent examples. These are all dominant enterprises in their own right. Reasonable valuation The path of least resistance is to immediately follow in Bill Ackman's footsteps and buy Uber shares. But investors must take the time to understand the investment case with this opportunity. Once that hurdle checkpoint is cleared, the next step is to take the valuation into account. Uber's stock has been on quite the run, accelerating 109% higher since June 2023. Strong financial performance in recent years is doing a great job of winning over the investment community. But the valuation is still very reasonable. The stock trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 23.5. Maybe now is a good time to consider initiating a position in the company. It's report-card season for many parents as the school year comes to a close. This year, the Grade 2s studied change and our daughter reflected on the change of getting younger siblings. 'But now that I am a big sister, I regret the excitement because they are super wild … and they ask me for stuff when I'm not actually free.' She's going to be really disappointed when she finds out this happens a lot in motherhood, too. Here are five things to keep an eye on this week: Markets climb wall of worry: Canadian markets managed to put in a third consecutive weekly gain thanks to higher gold and energy prices. U.S. markets, on the other hand, succumbed to geopolitical tensions and suffered a weekly loss. Stocks tumbled Friday after attacks between Israel and Iran escalated. It's interesting to note that money continues to come out of equities and into bonds. Equity funds globally have seen outflows for 4 out of the past 5 weeks while bond funds have seen six consecutive weeks of gains, according to data from TD's global rates team. Unsurprisingly, U.S. stocks have seen the brunt of the outflows. It was a different story for crude oil, which surged to a nearly six-month high. Will this rally last? 'Its ultimate landing point will likely hinge on whether Iran revives the 2019 playbook and targets tankers, pipelines and key energy facilities across the region,' wrote RBC's Helima Croft in a note to clients after the attacks. Key to all of this as well will be the extent to which the U.S. gets drawn in. Energy stocks were already moving higher even before oil prices advanced. This week on my In the Money podcast, Cole Smead of Smead Capital Management – a U.S. investor who loves Canadian energy stocks right now − called higher oil prices a bonus, not a necessity, for a sector trading at such low valuations. G7 meeting: The attack on Iran by Israel will no doubt loom large at the G7 meeting in Kananaskis, Alta, which takes place Sunday to Tuesday. Aside from those tensions, investors will be watching for signs of trade deals, tariff relief and possible Russian sanctions. As The Globe and Mail reported, the last time Canada played host to the meeting and Trump was President, it didn't go so well. The G7 is also becoming a misnomer with eight other countries, including Mexico and India, participating. It will likely be more about what G7+ can accomplish, particularly if there is tariff relief for Canada and Mexico. For G7 leaders, immense global challenges weigh on agenda overshadowed by Trump Central banks: This week, we will get interest-rate decisions from a number of central banks including the U.S. Federal Reserve, Bank of England and Bank of Japan. None are expected to change rates this week. However, all eyes will be on the Fed's rationale if it stands pat, given inflation has been coming in below expectations. 'Policy is restrictive by most measures and, with inflation trending downward in the first five months of this year, lowering the fed funds rate 25bp would be a step towards policy normalization rather than policy easing,' wrote Will Compernolle, macro strategist with FHN Financial. So why isn't the Fed lowering rates? Ostensibly, it remains concerned about inflation. But is inflation-hunting going to be the new recession-hunting? May's cooler inflation reading despite tariffs is a head scratcher. 'We suspect this may have been a response to weak consumer demand in May and businesses' reluctance to fully pass price increases to consumers, especially since tariff rates are not set in stone and can vary substantially week to week,' wrote Scott Anderson, BMO's chief U.S. economist, in a note to clients. The Fed will have a chance to weigh in here. This meeting will also feature an update of the 'dot plots' – projections of where each Fed member sees rates going. Paris Air Show: This year's air show may not carry with it the usual pomp and circumstance of major plane makers showing off their wares and making deals. In addition to tariffs looming large, last week's Air India crash is casting further chaos into the mix with investigations into what caused the Boeing Dreamliner to crash. This is the first fatal crash of a Dreamliner, and Boeing BA-N shares lost 5 per cent last week. This is not just a Boeing problem. One of its suppliers, GE Aerospace GE-N, postponed its Investor Day at the Paris Air Show because of the tragedy. RBC Capital Markets was expecting GE to boost its profit forecast and generally give a bullish presentation. But the delay is 'an overhang on GE and the broader sector for a period of time,' wrote RBC Capital Markets managing director Ken Herbert in a note to clients. Empire earnings: Shares of Empire EMP-A-T have been consolidating around record highs ahead of quarterly results on Thursday. Profit is expected to rise 23 per cent and analysts expect about a 2.8-per-cent increase in comparable sales, a key metric that tracks sales growth not attributed to new store openings. This would be the fourth consecutive quarter of improving same-store sales. While there aren't a lot of fireworks expected this quarter, it is worth noting that consumer staples like Empire, grocers and Dollarama DOL-T and have been star performers this year. Empire's U.S. product sales dropping during trade war, CEO says Tamy Chen, BMO Capital Markets director and equity research analyst, is starting to wonder if that trade is getting 'long in the tooth,' in a preview of Empire's earnings. She also muses about whether the 'buy Canadian trend' is starting to whither. She notes that discretionary stocks like Canadian Tire CTC-A-T and Aritzia ATZ-T have started to take off.
