USC football seeks a stronger start in 2025 after 2024 September stumbles

USA Today13-05-2025

USC football seeks a stronger start in 2025 after 2024 September stumbles USC needs to be unbeaten at the end of September this football season.
After back-to-back seasons of five or more losses, USC football is looking to turn things around in 2025. However, doing so will not be easy, as the Trojans play a schedule that includes Oregon, Notre Dame, and Michigan.
One thing USC does have going for it, however, is the start. The Trojans open with four games that by all means, they absolutely should win. It will not be until a month into the season when USC faces its first true test.
College football analyst Josh Pate of CBS Sports has taken note of this. On a recent episode of his national college football show, Pate named USC as a "hot-start candidate" for 2025.
"Which teams could really start fast this year?" Pate said. "USC's one of them . . . USC will be, I think, solidly favored in their first four games.
"They're gonna win their first two games [vs. Missouri State and Georgia Southern]. And then they're on the road in the Big Ten, but it's Purdue . . . they should win that game. Michigan State, at home, they should win that game.
"It won't be until at Illinois . . . their fifth game, where the country may watch them. And then you'll really get your first look at them nationally week seven—it's their sixth game—when Michigan comes to town.
"Honestly they could be 5-0 when they play Michigan. And they play Michigan at home. They could be 6-0 when they go to Notre Dame [the following week], they could be 5-1 even when they go to Notre Dame. That would still be a huge game."
USC fans are certainly hoping that this indeed comes to fruition, and that the Trojans start the year off hot. However, as 2023—when USC started off 6-0 but then lost five of its final six regular season games—showed, just starting off hot is not enough. The Trojans will need to continue to play winning football throughout the season if they want to convince people that the program truly is turning around for the better.

WATCH: Ohio State fan Denny Hamlin throws up O-H after winning NASCAR race in Michigan

Denny Hamlin is an elite NASCAR driver and outspoken Ohio State Buckeyes fan. There are plenty of rumors on the internet and comments in media about why and how his Buckeye fandom started, but it got far more intense this season. After winning his first race of the year this seaon back in March, he waved an "11 Against the World" flag (his car is No.11). Hamlin certainly outdid himself this race, though. He made a late pass for the lead and held on to win his third race of the season (and 57th overall career win) at Michigan International Speedway, in Brooklyn, MI (about 40 miles from the Ohio border). He then threw up an O-H to the stands twice after getting out of his car to celebrate the win. Fans were still cheering, but that moment got some predictable boos. All in all, NASCAR fans still love him, but Buckeye fans will probably love him even more for now. This is not the first time Hamlin has good-naturedly angered crowds when he travels to races. He recently threw a "Horns Down" sign before his race in Michigan a month ago. He finished that race 38th. Hulk Hogan's Real American Beer returns to NASCAR on Ricky Stenhouse Jr.'s paint scheme

Ricky Stenhouse's No. 47 Chevrolet will display the stars, stripes and Hulk Hogan's Real American Beer at Michigan International Speedway this weekend. For the second time this season, Real American Beer will sponsor Stenhouse's ride. The Hulkster-owned brand and the Hyak Motorsports driver first joined forces in March at Las Vegas. Advertisement 'Brother, Michigan knows how to go full throttle — and so does Real American Beer,' said Hogan, a WWE Hall of Famer, co-founder of Real American Beer and resident of Clearwater, Florida. 'We're back on the track, back in the fight, and there's no better time to crack one open and let it rip.' Jimmy Hart, Hogan's former wrestling manager and the man nicknamed 'The Mouth of the South,' will be walking around the infield, passing out cold ones with a megaphone in hand all weekend. Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, launched the beer in June of 2024. 'Motorsports fans have been some of our loudest supporters from day one,' CEO Terri Francis said. 'This partnership is part of our strategy to meet them where they are — on the road, in the stands and in the beer aisle.' LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - MARCH 15: Ricky Stenhouse Jr., driver of the #47 Real American Beer Chevrolet, drives during practice for the NASCAR Cup Series Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 15, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by) Stenhouse is no stranger to drink-related sponsorships. SunnyD and NOS energy drink have been frequent flyers on his hood this season. Advertisement Like the first race he linked with Real American Beer, Stenhouse's machine will be dressed in red, white and blue — this time, with a flag motif — with the brand's logo on the side. At Nashville last Sunday, Stenhouse posted his first DNF of the year. He received a bump on the left-rear quarterpanel from Carson Hocevar before sliding backward into the wall on Lap 106. That ended his evening. He was none too pleased afterward, saying he planned to address the incident with Hocevar. The FireKeepers Casino 400 is scheduled to go green shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday. 'We didn't get the result we were after in Nashville, and that's frustrating, for sure,' Stenhouse said. 'But this team's got heart. We've put in the work this week, and we're heading to Michigan with a clean state and a fast Real American Beer Chevy.' VOTE: Do you like NASCAR TV broadcasts on Amazon Prime Video?

To Prime or not to Prime? That is the question. As NASCAR puts the first two races of its five-race Amazon Prime Video experiment in the rearview mirror and moves on to Week 3 at Michigan International Speedway, perspectives run the gamut. Advertisement Some fans love Prime's coverage. They enjoy less commercials — only six minutes of full breaks during the 198 minutes of the Nashville Cup Series race broadcast last week, according to CawsNjaws. They like listening to Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the booth. And they were probably already paying for Amazon Prime (or they took advantage of a 30-day free trial). But others loathe Prime's coverage simply due to accessibility. They don't want to pay for the streaming service or don't want to mess around with a new app on their colored televisions. The ratings have remained decent. According to the Nielson folks, the first two Prime broadcasts have averaged between 2-3 million viewers. That matches races on FS1. It's lower than the races on Fox, of course. Advertisement So let's conduct a little test of our own. Through two weeks, how are you feeling? Do you like having NASCAR on Prime? Or do you hate it? The poll will stay open until noon Sunday. This article originally appeared on The Daytona Beach News-Journal: NASCAR races on Amazon Prime Video: Like or dislike? | Poll question
