Frenzy erupts over Adam Selwood act in Welcome to Country

News.com.au18-05-2025

A social media frenzy has erupted over the tribute given to Adam Selwood during Saturday night's clash between the Western Bulldogs and Essendon.
News of the 41-year-old's death has left the AFL world in deep mourning — coming just three months after twin brother Troy took his own life.
One of four Selwood brothers to play AFL football, Adam played 187 games for West Coast and was famously part of the Eagles' 2006 premiership win over the Sydney Swans.

Tributes to Selwood were made across Saturday's AFL matches and local Wurundjeri Elder Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin AO also paid her respects to the footballer and his grieving family during her Welcome to Country at Marvel Stadium.
Murphy Wandin delivered classy messages of support for the families of football greats who have died recently — including Robert Walls earlier this week and Andrew Krakouer three weeks' ago.
However, it was her mention of Selwood that has upset some football spectators.
You can watch her comments in the video player above.
During her Welcome, Murphy Wandin made the mistake of mentioning the death of Troy Selwood — mistaking him for his twin brother, who died on Saturday.
'Today we all shared some very sad news,' she said.
'I would like to acknowledge though, firstly, the passing of young players. Exceptional when they are that young for this to happen.
'And I'd like to mention and pay my tribute and best wishes to Andrew Krakouer's family.
'And then of course today we heard the passing of Troy Selwood, another young man too young. We are very saddened by his loss. And again. Sincere condolences to his family.
'And in my era, the lovely Robert Walls. A man of stigma. A man of stamina. And a man that was committed to everything he did. And again we pay condolences to his family.'
Her mention of Troy Selwood came during a four-minute speech where the senior leader of the Kulin nation observed the AFL's Sir Doug Nicholls Round — the annual round designed to celebrate the impact Indigenous players have had on the game.
'We're here tonight to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Doug Nichols round,' she said.
'And I want to pay my respect to him because he was a gentleman. A small man, but full of stature. And certainly a champion in everything he achieved.
'We owe him so much, but we will continue to honour the legacy he has left behind. 2025 has been an up and down season I believe for AFL, VFL and another of other sports.'
She went on to say: 'We are here for a celebration. We are celebrating all Indigenous players from the past and through to the current players of today.
'No matter what level of sport they play. We are very proud of them. And I want to say thank you for having me.'
While some social media commentators praised Murphy Wandin for sharing her condolences, others were angry, labelling the mention of Troy Selwood as being 'disrespectful'.
One popular AFL content profile on X posted: 'That was horrible from Aunty Joy. It was very disrespectful'.
One comment viewed 50,000 times on X said: 'Terrible by Aunty Joy. Incredibly disrespectful.
'She named the wrong person who passed away.'
Another user of X posted: 'Not a good look by the lady doing the welcome to country getting Adam Selwood and Troy Selwood mixed up today'.
One person posted: 'Terrible mistake. I'd put it down to her age and being nervous in front of such a big crowd and being broadcasted on TV'.
Another wrote: 'Aunty Joy has had a nightmare. If you're paying your respects, at least do it right'.
One person hit back on X, writing: 'I must have been watching a different version. I thought Aunty Joy did a wonderful job, but then there are those who are totally opposed to anything to do with reconciliation.
'Get in the bin you nasty people.'
Another person wrote: 'Aunty Joy's welcome to country at the footy tonight — so powerful, thoughtful and insightful'.
Murphy Wandin was last month embroiled in the Melbourne Storm Welcome to Country fiasco where the NRL club was ultimately dropped by major partner Victorian Aboriginal Health Services (VAHS) as a result of a miscommunication that led to a Welcome to Country being cancelled before the team's Anzac Day game.
Meanwhile, Selwood will be honoured before Sunday's West Coast game against St Kilda at Optus Stadium in Perth.
The Eagles have confirmed the club will wear black arm bands as part of its tribute to the popular player.
'The West Coast Eagles are mourning the heartbreaking loss of 2006 premiership player Adam Selwood, with news of his sudden passing devastating the entire football community,' the club said in a statement.
'Selwood was a much-loved former player, coach and staff member who made a profound and lasting contribution to the Club.
'The Eagles will honour and pay tribute to Selwood at today's game, with a moments silence prior to the Welcome to Country.'
Adam Selwood's final act for his twin Troy is being honoured across the country following his death with fans flocking to donate money to a charity program he was supporting.
Adam Selwood was raising raise money for a mental health charity in his brother's honour
In a heartbreaking set of circumstances, Adam Selwood recently said his plans to take part in next week's HBF Run for a Reason — in support of the zero2hero charity — was one of the things that 'kept him going' after his brother's death.
The Run for a Reason half marathon will continue to take place on Sunday, May 25, and Selwood will be in the hearts of many that run the course in Perth.
In a touching twist, more than $4000 was donated to Selwood's zero2hero campaign on Saturday night — taking his total money raised to more than $25,000.
Selwood originally set out on his half marathon journey aiming to raise $10,000 — but the exercise has touched the hearts of many more people than may have been expected.

South African captain Temba Bavuma survives controversial DRS decision in World Test Championship final

South Africa have made the most of perfect batting conditions at Lord's to reduce Australia's lead to 91 in the World Test Championship final. Starting day two in serious trouble at 4-43, the Proteas were able to frustrate Australia's star-studded bowling attack and move to 5-121 at lunch on day two. Australia, boosted by Beau Webster's 72 and a 66 from Steve Smith, posted 212 on Wednesday after being sent in to bat. With the sun shining from ball one on Thursday, unlike day one when it was overcast until the afternoon, South Africa batted sensibly and attempted to keep the scoreboard moving. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma survived a controversial DRS decision, allowing him to make important inroads into Australia's lead. Adjudged lbw on 16 off Josh Hazlewood, Bavuma left it late to review, but eventually took the decision upstairs with four seconds remaining. The ball would have been smashing into the stumps, but a spike on snicko incredibly meant Bavuma had survived. Former England captain Alastair Cook said during radio commentary he didn't believe Bavuma had hit it. But after looking promising, highlighted by smashing opposing captain Pat Cummins for six, Bavuma (36) scooped a drive to cover where Marnus Labuschagne pulled off a terrific diving catch. Cummins (2-24) got the crucial breakthrough, gaining revenge for being the first bowler in the match to be hit over the rope. Australia have managed to produce several edges, but none have carried completely to the slips cordon. No.6 David Bedingham (39*) has looked steady at the crease, and will resume with dangerous wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne (11*) after lunch. South Africa, who won seven straight Tests to qualify for the final, are attempting to break a title drought in ICC tournaments dating back to 1998.

Don't miss out on the headlines from Tennis. Followed categories will be added to My News. Kyrgios, who turned 30 on April 27, and Hatzi ended their relationship in March this year. Watch every game of The NBA Finals LIVE with ESPN on Kayo Sports | New to Kayo? The Australian, whose tennis career has been blighted by significant injuries over the past three years, took to Instagram over the last 24 hours for a Q and A session with his 4.1 million followers. Using the caption 'Don't hold back, ask whatever', Kyrgios was hit with a wide range of questions and chose to respond to a number of them using Instagram stories. Among queries about his tennis career and his advice for others, the Canberran was also asked a question by someone who has been following his styling trends. Nick Kyrgios answered a wide range of questions on Instagram. (Photo by Don Arnold/WireImage) 'How's 30 treating you so far and when are you debuting the new haircut?' was one of the questions. Kyrgios replied with a video of him driving and the caption: '30 is unreal – not even in my prime yet. And shaved heads is UNREAL.' You can see the new look in the video below. Cracks had appeared in Kyrgios and Hatzi's relationship earlier this year. In a telling sign in this day and age, they both removed each other from their Instagram bios before Hatzi broke her silence on the rumours in April. 'It's been great,' Hatzi told The Daily Telegraph when asked about her life since the romance ended. 'I'm still going on with work and I have a few different brands that I'm working with at the moment.' She went on to insist that it's important to 'put yourself first' in life. Naturally, Kyrgios – who has stayed quiet about the details of the separation – was also asked about Hatzi during his fan session. 'Will you ever talk on the split with C or keeping it private?' was one question. He said: 'Things happen. I wish her nothing but the best. So many incredible memories that will stay with me.' Kyrgios was also asked what he thought of another former partner, tennis player Anna Kalinskaya, who later had a relationship with current world No. 1 Jannik Sinner which ended in May. Earlier this month, Kyrgios got tongues wagging after a public display with a woman being called a Hatzi 'look-alike'. Kyrgios began chatting with former Love Island reality TV contestant Mia Dalkos. It has not gone unnoticed that Dalkos, whose real name is Efthimia, has unmistakably similar features to the woman Kyrgios recently broke up with. Kyrgios and popular fashion designer Dalkos caused a stir with flirty recent social media engagements. Dalkos captured Kyrgios' attention on Instagram when she shared a video of herself glammed up at a hair salon. Kyrgios sparked romance rumours with Mia Dalkos (left) and his post on Hatzi. Photos: Instagram Kyrgios commented on the post by sharing a 'double eyes' emoji — a less than subtle way of showing Dalkos that he was interested in the post. The 23-year-old South Australian responded to the former Wimbledon finalist by posting a shy smiling emoji of her own. The 30-year-old Canberran followed up his first message by posting a blunt 'Beautiful' comment on a second photo Dalkos shared the following day. Kyrgios was also in the news in the past week after it emerged he had been axed from a commentary role with the BBC. Reports first landed on Wednesday morning this week the Australian tennis star has been told his services will not be required when the network begins its coverage of Wimbledon, beginning June 30. Kyrgios has barely been sighted on a tennis court in recent years. (Photo by Simon Bruty/Anychance/Getty Images) It comes after his appointment to the broadcaster's team for the event last year sparked uproar. In another body blow, The Telegraph reports Kyrgios will also not appear during ESPN's coverage of the tournament, despite working with the American broadcaster during the Australian Open in 2024 and 2025. It has been a brutal few weeks for the 30-year-old after he was last month forced to pull out of his plans to play doubles with partner Jordan Thompson at the French Open. Citing a recently flared up knee injury, Kyrgios was forced to pull out on the eve of the event and he last week confirmed he will not play at Wimbledon this year because of injuries.
