Wednesday's briefing: England Under-21s feel the heat as Bale plans for big role
Gareth Bale is pursuing the purchase of Cardiff while Bayern Munich were beaten in their final Club World Cup game. Building towards the #U21EURO semi-final!👊📈 — England (@England) June 24, 2025 Lee Carsley will not allow the heat to be an excuse as England Under-21s prepare to face the Netherlands in the European Championship semi-finals in Bratislava, where temperatures will swelter above 30 degrees celsius. Carsley's side beat tournament favourites Spain in the quarter-finals to take a big step towards defending their title in Slovakia. 'We've not shied away from the heat,' Carsley said. 'We've exposed the players to it fully. We're ready for it. We're fully prepared now.' 🦅 @SLBenfica secure an historic win against @FCBayern to move things around in Group C. 🔢 — FIFA Club World Cup (@FIFACWC) June 24, 2025 Benfica topped Group C of the Club World Cup with a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich. Andreas Schjelderup's early goal settled the match in sweltering conditions in Charlotte as the Portuguese side set up a last-16 tie with Chelsea or Esperance de Tunis. This was their first ever victory over the German champions and Bruno Lage's side could be dark horses for the tournament. Bayern dominated the second half and had chances to earn at least a draw, with Joshua Kimmich having a goal disallowed and Leroy Sane missing two big one-on-one chances, as they go through to play Flamengo. Gareth Bale believes he is the right person to lead Cardiff back to the Premier League and intends to be heavily involved if the investment group he is working with complete a takeover, a source close to the 35-year-old has said. Bale spoke publicly about his interest in purchasing the League One club on Monday, saying it would be a 'dream come true' if a deal could be done. Asked what sort of role Bale might take on, the source said: 'A very significant one. He is not going to be a bit-part player. 'This is a guy who has been super-successful and doesn't need to put his name to something just for the sake of it. He would be heavily involved. He believes he is the right person for this.' A message from Rob 🤳 — Middlesbrough FC (@Boro) June 24, 2025 Rob Edwards has been appointed as Middlesbrough's new head coach on a three-year deal. The 42-year-old, who left Luton by mutual consent in January, replaces former Manchester United and England midfielder Michael Carrick, whose reign was brought to a close earlier this month after the Teessiders missed out on the Sky Bet Championship play-offs. A statement on the club's official website said: 'Middlesbrough are delighted to announce the appointment of Rob Edwards as our new head coach. 'A Premier League promotion winner, he joins the club on a three-year contract and is joined in the dugout by Adi Viveash and Harry Watling. Together as one 👊 — England (@England) June 24, 2025 England Under-21s will hope to emulate the senior team 12 months ago by beating the Netherlands in the European Championship semi-final. Germany and France battle it out in the other semi-finals. Group F of the Club World Cup comes to a close as Borussia Dortmund take on Ulsan HD while Mamelodi Sundowns play Fluminense. In the early hours of Thursday morning, Inter Milan are up against River Plate and Urawa Reds play Monterrey.

George Kittle reveals the wild NFL training method that impacts player's sex lives
San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle recently gushed about his use of a revolutionary training method which has a bizarre side effect which positively impacts his sex life. On a recent appearance on the podcast 'Bussin With the Boys', Kittle spoke about his use of a Vasper machine to help improve his recovery. The Vasper system is a recumbent workout bike with pumping handles which requires users to place straps across their body to restrict blood flow. By doing this on a users legs, arms, and neck, it stimulates the pituitary gland into thinking that they've completed an intense, hours-long workout. In reality, it's only suggested to use the machine for 21 minutes. Among the benefits of the machine, it tricks the brain into thinking there's excess inflammation throughout the body - stimulating the production of testosterone to improve recovery, muscle growth, and more. But it also has one positive side effect for more intimate moments, as Kittle revealed. The Vasper bike tricks the body into producing more testosterone, which aids in recovery 'I do it a little bit during OTA's, but as soon as I get back in the summer, it's like my cardio every day at the end of my workout,' the tight end said. 'It also knocks you the f**k out at night, unconscious. You sleep so well, and you have wild dreams, too. It's awesome.' But there's another side effect, as Kittle reveals: 'The main selling point is you blow huge loads. 'That's how it was sold to players. It was like, "Look, it boosts your testosterone, you sleep really well, you're going to feel great... and you also blow huge loads."' Kittle didn't buy it at first: 'I was like "Oh, that's bulls**t". Not bulls**t. And then that rumor started going around.' Kittle has been married to his wife, Claire, since April 2019 after meeting at the University of Iowa. Claire previously discovered she was pregnant on Christmas Day 2023, but tragically found out the pregnancy was ectopic - requiring surgery to save her life. However, the couple were named godparents to the son of the family of Nashville Predators forward Filip Forsberg. George has been seen holding the boy, Felix, at times when Filip is playing hockey.

Ironheart review – the small screen can barely contain the energy of this Black Panther spinoff
Amid the usual welter of pre-emptive criticisms, hopes, dreams, doubts and hostilities that suffuse the internet whenever a new addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe – or any other alternative world beloved of a fandom – is announced, Ironheart (the 14th TV series in the MCU and following on from the events in 2022's film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) has at last arrived. In the film, Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne, reprising the role on the small screen, which can barely contain her charisma or energy) was the genius MIT student who invented the vibranium detector that rather kicked off the whole vibranium power struggle, then the metal exoskeletal suit that aided the Wakandans in their face-off with Talokan. At the end, she returned to MIT and that is where we find her at the beginning of Ironheart, on a Tony Stark fellowship, and trying to wangle an extra year of grant money to refine the suit that could potentially transform emergency services provision. 'Help would never be too late!' Unfortunately, she has provided herself with interim funding by completing assignments for stupider students and is duly kicked out. She returns to her mother's apartment in Chicago with nothing but a battered prototype flying suit to show for her efforts, plus recurring flashbacks to the night five years ago when she lost her beloved stepfather Gary and her best and only friend Natalie in a shootout at the former's garage. What's a traumatised genius inventor to do? Well, first she scans her own brain to upgrade her suit's AI and this results in, effectively, the murdered Natalie (Lyric Ross) coming back to life and being able to accompany bestie on her new swathe of adventures. These adventures come courtesy of a gang of misfits who have assembled above a pizza parlour nearby and are bent on sticking it to The Man via one telegenic heist and/or caper per episode, accruing money and power as they go – with all of their plans facilitated by having someone in an impregnable, weaponised suit accompanying them. The group is led by the formerly petty and now much more ambitious criminal Parker 'The Hood' Robbins (Anthony Ramos), owner of a mysterious cloak (with a hood, obvs) that enables him to become invisible – and who is also the sporter of a large tattoo that attempts to disguise a torso that is covered in scales. Is he the Big Bad or is he just the instrument of a Bigger Bad, possibly linked to the unearthly sumptuary powers hanging round him? I guess we will have to wait and see. Riri signs up to help the gang with three jobs to earn money to pay for improvements to her suit. Shopping for bionic and/or black market parts brings her into contact with Joe McGillicuddy (Alden Ehrenreich), an over-nice guy who lets people walk all over him until Riri starts giving him bracing life advice. His bunkerful of illegal tech and weaponry makes him feel closer to his father, an engineer, and Joe intends to use it not for bellicose purposes but for the betterment of humanity. Older, more jaded people might buy this story from a man with a bunkerful of illegal tech and weaponry slightly less readily than Riri does, but she is young and perhaps by episode three or so she will learn. We all, in fact, must work quite hard to stay up to speed. Ironheart is a fast and furious business. Like Ms Marvel, it is clearly aimed at the younger end of the fan spectrum and the pace is relentless, as if the makers are desperate not to give the audience a second to look away. In keeping with the YA vibe, there is much weight given to loyalty and friendship rather than romance or sex (though there is a spark between Riri and Natalie's sweet brother Xavier, played by Matthew Elam); no swearing, and plenty of flashy effects and cartoonish violence involving a lot of people being thrown against a lot of walls. There is also a very repetitive emphasis on The Choices We Make and how they Define the People We Become – how long you can hang out with criminals without becoming one, how often you can do the wrong thing for the right reasons without it corrupting you, at what point ignorance becomes wilful, and so on. To say it becomes preachy would be putting things too strongly. But 'slightly tiresome' would not. At least until it's time again to throw someone at a wall. And for that you rarely have to wait too long. Ironheart is on Disney+
