RAF chief set to be new head of armed forces
The head of the RAF is set to be appointed as the new chief of the British armed forces, according to reports. Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton is thought to be in line to be the next Chief of Defence Staff. The position is currently held by Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, who has been in the role since 2021. According to his biography on the Government website, Sir Richard joined the RAF in 1989 as a university cadet, and served as deputy chief of the defence staff from 2019 to 2022. The appointment comes as the Government has pledged to increase defence spending in the UK to 2.5% of gross domestic product on defence from April 2027, with a goal of increasing that to 3% over the next parliament, a timetable which could stretch to 2034. The Ministry of Defence said: 'This is speculation. The appointment process is ongoing and any announcement will be made in the usual way.'

Bruno Fernandes reveals wife's question that persuaded him to reject £300m deal
Saudi Pro-League club Al-Hilal were prepared to offer Bruno Fernandes a £750,000-a-week deal - in a package worth £200m to the player - to join them ahead of this summer's Club World Cup Bruno Fernandes insists he is happy at Manchester United after snubbing a £300million move to Saudi Arabia after talks with his wife. Saudi Pro-League club Al-Hilal were prepared to offer the Portugal star a £750,000-a-week deal - in a package worth £200m to the player - to join them ahead of this summer's Club World Cup. They were ready to pay over £100m to convince United to sell. But United captain Fernandes informed them he would not make the move after discussing it with his family. The 30-year-old midfielder is now expected to stay at United where he earns £250,000-a-week. 'There was an opportunity," said the Portugal international. "The [Al-Hilal] president called me and asked if I wanted to go there. Manchester United didn't want to sell me. They don't need the money. 'There was a waiting period on my part to think about what the future would hold. I would be open to it, if Manchester United felt it was my time. I spoke with Mister Ruben Amorim, who really tried to talk me out of it. 'I spoke with the club, which wasn't willing to sell, only if I truly wanted to leave. We never talked about money; that was all handled by my agent, not me.' Fernandes' wife, Ana Pinho, was crucial in the decision to stay despite the chance to link up with international team-mates in the Middle East and earn huge money. 'I spoke with my family to understand if that was what I wanted for my future,' Fernandes said ahead of Portugal's Nations League semi-final against Germany. 'It was actually my wife who asked me — I never said yes or no. She put my professional priorities ahead of everything else. It would have been an easy move. I had Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo there, two people I have a great friendship with. 'But I want to stay at the highest level, play in big competitions, because I still feel capable. I want to keep being happy, I'm still very passionate about this sport, and I'm happy with my decision.' Fernandes is eager to remain playing at the top level in Europe and will remain part of Ruben Amorim's rebuild at Old Trafford following a horror campaign which saw them finish 15th in the Premier League. Former United captain Gary Neville said: 'I don't think anyone has doubted his commitment to Manchester United. He's consistent, his chances created, goals, assists have been sensational. 'The fact that he wants to stay, the fact that he wants to go through this and come out the other side, because it would have been easy for him at the end of this season to say, 'Look, I'm done here,' will endear him towards Manchester United fans even more. "To turn that money down at a point where Manchester United are at their lowest ebb and say, 'No, I want to fight through this, I want to see it through the other side, I want to come out and achieve things,' I think it says a lot about him as a person, as a character. The club needs people who are going to run through a brick wall for them." Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football. Steven Gerrard's demand to Liverpool chiefs after Florian Wirtz bids rejected
Liverpool are desperate to complete a deal for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz this summer but are struggling to agree on a fee - though club legend Steven Gerrard feels the club should do what it takes to get the signing done Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has urged his former club to do what's necessary to sign Florian Wirtz this summer, with the Reds still attempting to strike a deal with Bayer Leverkusen. The German talent is one of Europe's hottest properties after some stunning form in the Bundesliga in recent seasons. Wirtz managed 16 goals and 13 assists in all competitions as he helped Leverkusen to a second placed finish in the German top flight. Last season, his incredible displays inspired the team to their first ever Bundesliga title win as they also claimed the German Cup and reached the Europa League final. Now Liverpool look like frontrunners to sign the 22-year-old after Arne Slot held discussions with the player and convinced them Anfield was the perfect place for his future development, ahead of rivals Bayern Munich. The reigning Premier League champions now need to agree on a fee for Wirtz, with the German outfit holding out for around £125million. Liverpool have already had two bids rejected after initially offering £84 with £12.6m in bonus. After that was rejected they upped it again and tabled an overall package which totalled £109.6m, but both were ultimately knocked back reports Kicker. Now Gerrard has told Liverpool to "make it happen" after hailing him as a "big talent" who has a "huge future in front of him". Speaking to TNT Sports, he said: "There are rumours obviously, Florian Wirtz. A big talent, who's done fantastic for Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen. He's got a huge future in front of him, so if Liverpool is the place for him, let's hope we can make it happen." Liverpool are also in the running to sign left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth after also landing right-back Jeremie Frimpong as Trent Alexander-Arnold's replacement. Gary Neville has weighed in on Liverpool's quest to sign Wirtz, claiming they will have a big chance of retaining their title if they can pull off the signing, along with Kerkez. "I think when you're talking about winning the league, what is it that improves you? I mean, the only thing that's going to improve you when you win the league is signing world-class players, or players that have got the potential to be world-class players. So signing Wirtz is fantastic. "Frimpong and then there's talk of Kerkez as well, deals with their right and left-back situations. So to get those three done, if they were to get those three done quite quickly, would be smart business. But I wouldn't have expected anything else from Liverpool. "[I'm] Maybe slightly surprised that they've gone so heavy on Wirtz in terms of the fee. They don't normally go that big, but Slot deserves it, by the way. He waited 12 months for a player to sign."
