Border bridge: Iraqi-Iranian village defies divisions
Shafaq News/ In Iraq's border village of Byara, a narrow stream no wider than half a meter separates it from Iran—yet along its banks, locals from both sides gather daily, defying division through shared routines. On the Iraqi side, 'Uncle Darwish' operates a small wooden café that attracts visitors from across Iraq and Iran. 'People come to sit, drink tea, and enjoy the view,' he told Shafaq News. 'It doesn't matter whether they pay in dinars or tomans—this place isn't about money.' Across the stream, Iranian farmer Mehdi Haidari manages his family's orchard, offering blackberries and mulberries to customers from both countries. 'Most are Kurdish Iraqis,' he said, 'but some travel from farther south.' Together, the café and orchard form an informal haven where politics give way to connection. Day-trippers cross the shallow stream to enjoy the mountain air, swap stories, and find common ground. Byara has quietly become a symbol of peaceful coexistence—a reminder that borders may be official, but human bonds often ignore them.

Over 300,000 visitors: Erbil's tourism sector soars this Eid
Shafaq News/ Large numbers of tourists began arriving in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, on the first day of Eid al-Adha, as the city continues to develop into a prominent tourism destination in Iraq and the wider region. Sirwan Tawfiq, Marketing Director at the Erbil Tourism Board, told Shafaq News that authorities expect to welcome over 300,000 tourists across the Kurdistan Region during the Eid holiday this year—up from 220,000 visitors during the same period last year. 'This growth is the result of extensive government facilitation measures for tourists, from easing entry procedures to offering a wide range of tourism services,' Tawfiq explained, adding that a comprehensive plan was implemented to ensure smooth visitor flow, including strengthened services in hotels and public facilities, expanded operations at tourist information centers, and full preparation of historical and recreational sites to receive guests. Public spaces across Erbil were filled with families and visitors from various Iraqi provinces and neighboring countries. Parks, shopping centers, and main streets were particularly active. Ahmed Salman, a visitor from Baghdad, said, 'This is my first Eid in Erbil, and I was impressed by how well-organized everything is. Access to tourist sites is easy, and the hospitality has been exceptional.' Sara, a tourist from Basra, noted that 'services are well provided, from hotels to transportation. Everything has been smooth, making our trip comfortable and enjoyable.' Mohammed, visiting from Najaf, remarked that Erbil offers entertainment options suitable for all age groups and added that he and his family felt safe while exploring the city.

Test flight lands at Mosul Airport ahead of June 10 reopening
Shafaq News/ A test flight by Iraqi Airways successfully landed at Mosul International Airport on Thursday, ahead of the airport's official reopening scheduled for June 10. Nineveh Governor Abdulqadir al-Dakhil told Shafaq News, after arriving aboard the aircraft, that the test flight, which departed from Baghdad and landed in under 30 minutes, is part of broader efforts to restore the city's connectivity with the rest of Iraq and international destinations following years of disruption. 'The airport has been prepared in line with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and is now equipped with a modern runway, a fully developed passenger terminal, and an advanced control tower.' The airport's reopening is expected to take place in the presence of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, who is slated to arrive on one of the first official flights to Mosul as part of the inauguration ceremony. Governor al-Dakhil emphasized that the test landing signals the completion of key reconstruction works and transitions the project into a new phase: the operational management of the airport, noting that negotiations with several international airport management firms will begin after the Eid al-Adha holiday (June 6-9) to identify a qualified operator in line with global aviation practices. 'We will evaluate offers from international firms and hold technical negotiations to ensure that the selected operator meets efficiency standards and enhances Mosul's strategic and economic role,' al-Dakhil added. The airport project, initially launched in 2023, comes after extensive damage inflicted during ISIS's control of the city between 2014 and 2017. Reconstruction has been financed through the Nineveh provincial budget, in coordination with the Iraqi Ministries of Transport and Interior, the Civil Aviation Authority, and the Border Crossings Authority.
