Corporate Mentions Of ‘DEI' Dropped 72% In 2025, Analysis Finds

References to diversity, equity and inclusion in Fortune 100 company reports dropped 72% between 2024 and 2025, according to an analysis by Gravity Research, as pressure from the Trump administration has led corporations to gut their diversity initiatives.

Usage of the acronym 'DEI' in Fortune 100 company reports had the steepest decline between 2024 and 2025, decreasing by 98%, while each individual term also declined significantly: Mentions of 'diversity' dropped 62%, 'equity' decreased 48% and 'inclusion' declined 43%.
Gravity Research, a firm that studies how companies manage their reputations and respond to social pressures, analyzed more than 1,300 financial filings, proxy statements, earnings calls and other documents filed between 2023 and 2025.
References to DEI also decreased between 2023 and 2024, though to a lesser degree: 'DEI' declined 26% between those years, while mentions of 'diversity' dropped 30%.
Words explicitly referring to diversity, including 'DEI' and 'racial diversity,' declined 72% overall between 2024 and 2025, while words Gravity Research considered to be more neutral, like 'inclusion' and 'belonging,' declined 34% overall.
Gravity Research found companies adopted more 'neutral' language in 2024 as a potentially less controversial alternative to DEI, but had largely abandoned these terms by 2025 amid pressure from the federal government.
Use of the word 'belonging' increased 87% between 2023 and 2024 as a 'safer' alternative to DEI, but mentions of 'belonging' decreased 47% between 2024 and 2025.
Mentions of employee resource groups, which are often centered around racial or gender groups and were a frequent casualty of the corporate push away from DEI, dropped between 2024 and 2025, and many of these references mention these groups are open to all.
Earnings calls were the only place where mentions of 'DEI' increased, rising 390% between 2024 and 2025, as heightened scrutiny over DEI programs led to an increase in media and shareholder inquiries about these initiatives.
Joanna Piacenza, vice president of thought leadership at Gravity Research, said the report 'speaks volumes to the current political environment. It's become so charged, it's become so risky for corporations to speak publicly about their DEI commitments, stating companies are 'trying to keep up not only with how polarized things have become, but what they think consumers and other stakeholders want from them.'
Many companies have dropped their diversity programs or reframed them to focus more on general 'inclusion' or employee well-being amid pressure from conservative activists and the federal government. Among the first executive orders of President Donald Trump's second term were multiple directives targeting DEI programs across the federal government, which included threats to 'combat illegal private-sector DEI preferences.' Companies like Meta, Amazon and Walmart began dismantling diversity programs before Trump took office, and many more backed off after his inauguration. Many of these companies have abandoned diversity hiring goals, which Trump has framed as illegal discrimination, and some of these companies have cut DEI officer roles or transformed them to focus on general employee development. Anti-DEI activist Robby Starbuck, who has more than 800,000 followers on X, has claimed credit for several of the companies that have watered down their diversity initiatives, including Pepsi, Walmart and McDonald's, by threatening to expose their 'woke' policies on his social media.
A Gravity Research survey published last month found two in five companies plan to decrease LGBTQ Pride Month engagement this year, while another two-fifths said their engagement would stay the same and the rest said they had not decided. The survey elicited responses from 49 corporate executives from Fortune 1000 companies, some of whom cited pressure from the Trump administration and conservative activists. Of the companies who said they would pull back support for Pride, 43% of those said they would reduce external-facing engagement, including social media posts and presences at Pride marches. Gravity Research president Luke Hartig told Forbes the survey 'reveals just how dramatically the cultural and political tides have turned,' stating two-fifths of companies scaling back Pride Month engagement 'would've been unthinkable just five years ago.' Several of the nation's largest Pride organizations told Forbes earlier this year some longtime corporate sponsors pulled back funding this year, leaving the organizations in a bind to replace the lost money. San Francisco Pride told Forbes it lost $200,000 in funds after previous sponsors including Comcast and Diageo pulled out, while NYC Pride said a quarter of its sponsors either withheld or reduced funding this year, representing $750,000 in lost funds.

Additional protests have already broken out in San Francisco, Sacramento, Houston, San Antonio, Chicago and New York, where activists rallied over the weekend and into Monday in solidarity with demonstrators in Los Angeles. By Monday afternoon, organizers had scheduled demonstrations in nearly every major city, signaling a growing backlash to the Trump Administration's immigration enforcement tactics and its deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles. Read more: Trump Suggests Arresting Gavin Newsom, Escalating Tensions Over ICE Raids The protests were sparked by a series of workplace immigration raids last week, and escalated after the arrest of David Huerta, the president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) of California, during a demonstration in Los Angeles on Friday. Huerta, a prominent labor and civil rights leader, was taken into federal custody and hospitalized after what ICE described as interference with a federal operation. His arrest has galvanized organized labor, with SEIU chapters announcing nationwide demonstrations in his defense and in protest of what they called a 'clear attack on our communities.' In Los Angeles, the protests have grown larger and more confrontational since Friday. Hundreds of demonstrators marched downtown and clashed with law enforcement. Some protesters set barricades in the streets, vandalized buildings, and hurled objects at law enforcement. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds, and the California Highway Patrol used flash-bang grenades to clear demonstrators after a group blocked traffic. At least 150 people have been arrested in Los Angeles since the protests began, and city officials warned that further disruptions could continue throughout the week. Trump authorized the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to the city over the weekend, bypassing California Governor Gavin Newsom, who called the move 'a violation of state sovereignty' and signaled plans to challenge the decision in court. Trump has described protesters as 'insurrectionists' and 'professional agitators' who 'should be in jail.' A map of anti-ICE demonstrations posted by SEIU showed that events were planned in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Atlanta, Boston, Denver, Seattle, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Charlotte, Portland, St. Paul, Santa Fe, and more. TAPACHULA, Mexico (AP) — Mexican state police killed four gunmen near the border with Guatemala, then pursued more suspects into that country in three armored police vehicles, where they engaged in a shootout in the streets of a border town. Authorities in both countries said Monday they were investigating. The rare case of Mexican law enforcement crossing the border into Guatemala on Sunday in La Mesilla was captured by onlookers in videos widely circulated online. With the border crossing a short distance in the background, armed men in ballistic vests and carrying rifles can be seen shouting at the open driver side door of a Chiapas state police armored vehicle. Suddenly, another such vehicle comes speeding through the border crossing from behind scattering the armed men. The initial vehicle reverses back toward Mexico and a third armored police vehicle enters from a side street slamming a civilian vehicle into the side of the other armored police truck. Gunfire erupts with the police trucks and civilian vehicles getting hit by bullets. All the while, a Guatemalan military truck with a soldier in the turret, sits in the middle of the melee. It was the latest flare-up of violence along a section of the border that has become a flashpoint as rival Mexican drug cartels and their local affiliates battle for control of valuable smuggling routes for migrants, guns and drugs. Asked about the events, Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday that everything appeared to show that Mexican authorities entered Guatemala. 'They are investigating it and it is not all right that has happened,' she said. Chiapas state Gov. Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar criticized what he suggested were Guatemalan authorities protecting members of organized crime. His security chief, Oscar Aparicio Avendaño, told The Associated Press on Monday that police had used a drone to detect armed men crossing the border into Mexico. Police intercepted them, killing four, including a local gang leader. 'They try to cross (back to Guatemala) to evade justice and that's where we intercept them and there's the shooting,' Ramírez said. The police involved were part of a state police force called the Pakales, which have also been accused of wrongdoing. Across the border in Guatemala, authorities were cautious in their initial response. Guatemala Vice President Karin Herrera said Monday that the Guatemalan government was talking to Mexican authorities about what happened, 'but there are many things that must be confirmed.' Guatemala Defense Minister Henry Sáenz said none of the Guatemalan soldiers present in La Mesilla fired their weapons and that it remained under investigation. The stretch of the Mexico-Guatemala border has seen near continuous violence in the past two years as the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels battle for control. Last year, the violence spurred hundreds of Mexican residents to flee into Guatemala for safety. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday denounced acts of violence linked to widespread demonstrations in Los Angeles against the Trump administration's immigration crackdown. Speaking during her regular morning news conference, Sheinbaum called for respect for legal processes in immigration enforcement and asked U.S. officials to uphold the rule of law. 'We condemn violence wherever it comes from,' Sheinbaum said, per Reuters. The protests erupted on Friday after Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted raids in the city and surrounding communities. Demonstrations were largely peaceful, but tensions flared Saturday and Sunday.
