England coach Mitchell to stay past home World Cup

BBC News29-04-2025

England women's head coach John Mitchell will stay on even if the Red Roses fail to win this year's home Rugby World Cup, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) has confirmed. The RFU revealed Mitchell, 61, and his England coaching staff all have contracts until 30 June 2026, regardless of the outcome of the World Cup that starts in August.England, who last won the World Cup in 2014, have lost the past two finals to New Zealand.RFU director of rugby performance Conor O'Shea said: "Results are important, but you don't want people thinking about what their next job is by having a contract finishing at that time."There will be no thought for anything until we get through the World Cup and Six Nations."
Mitchell was part of the coaching staff when Eddie Jones's England lost the 2019 World Cup final to South Africa and O'Shea backed him to handle the inherent pressure that comes with leading a side at a home World Cup.The Red Roses lost the 2010 World Cup final on home soil to New Zealand, while the men's team failed to get out of their pool at a home World Cup in 2015."The process that Mitch [John Mitchell] will bring the group through over the next four or five months will be to attempt to take that pressure away from them, but also deal with it and rationalise," O'Shea added."Anyone who has coached the All Blacks, England, the United States and Japan to the levels he has will have the battle scars to understand how to block out noise, but also use that pressure in a really good way."England comfortably won their opening four games of this year's Women's Six Nations, before holding on to defeat France by a point in a 43-42 thriller at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham on Saturday. The victory secured a fourth consecutive Grand Slam and seventh Six Nations title in a row to extend their winning run in all competitions to 25 games. The Red Roses's last defeat was by the Black Ferns at the World Cup final in 2022, with the match against Les Bleues the closest that sequence has come to ending."Anyone that thinks you are going to go into a World Cup and roll teams over because you are the hosts is deluding themselves," former Harlequins director of rugby O'Shea added."It's going to be an unbelievable summer for that group of players. The carrot is huge, but you don't write your own script. In sport, you never do."
Women still loss-making
England's women are still yet to return a profit, with the RFU continuing to invest £15m annually. However, there are green shoots with a 391% increase in ticketing in the last four years, compared to the four previous years.Despite the women's game making an overall loss they have collected £2.4m from ticketing revenue in the last season alone.Alex Teasdale , the RFU's director of the women's game, told the BBC: "It's not all about making money. I think ultimately we're here to be able to grow the game."There was a crowd of 37,573 at Allianz Stadium for last Saturday's win over France, a significant drop from the 58,498 who attended the same match in 2023.However, Teasdale is not concerned by the figures, adding: "We have got Rugby World Cup tickets on sale at the moment as well."I think a really interesting kind of stat from this season is that between Premiership Women's Rugby and the RFU, we sold 250,000 tickets for (women's) rugby in England this year."Then you add the Rugby World Cup tickets on top of that (275,000) and we're in for over half a million tickets this year."One small success story from the Allianz fixture was the sale of 500 red cowboy hats in the official stadium shop and outlets. The hats stem from a small group of Red Roses players, including Ellie Kildunne and Megan Jones, who self-styled themselves as the cowboys. The hats sold out nearly two hours before kick-off, with Teasdale adding the volume would need to "significantly" increase for the World Cup."The cowboy hats I think are just a really important moment in us trying to create a really strong fan engagement piece, as we know the Red Roses are very strong on their kind of country background and influences," she added."Seeing those hats around the ground, I think it's going be something to 'see' at the Rugby World Cup if we can get enough of them out there."

Tottenham to make Mathys Tel move permanent with £30m transfer fee

Tottenham are expected to seal the permanent signing of Mathys Tel for a fee of about €35m (£30m) in the next 48 hours. Spurs paid Bayern Munich a €10m loan fee to sign the forward for the second half of the Premier League season. The 20-year-old scored two goals in 13 league appearances, 11 of which were starts, but was an unused substitute for Spurs' Europa League final triumph over Manchester United, which resulted in their first trophy for 17 years. Tel is poised to become the first signing of the Thomas Frank era, after the Dane replaced Ange Postecoglou as manager on a three-year contract, though the groundwork for the deal was completed before Frank's appointment on Monday. Frank is interested in reuniting with Bryan Mbeumo, who Brentford value north of £60m, but are yet to bid for the forward. Mbeumo, also wanted by Manchester United, has been a revelation for Brentford since signing from Troyes in a £5.8m deal in August 2019, when Brentford were in the Championship. Spurs believe Frank can play a key role in convincing Mbeumo to join. United have had a bid worth up to £55m rejected for the Cameroon forward and Brentford are under no pressure to sell. The transfer window reopens on Monday. Arsenal sent Foden transfer message as Man City accept defeat on Grealish exit

Former Premier League striker Tony Cascarino believes Arsenal should try and sign Manchester City star Phil Foden this summer, while Jack Grealish could depart on loan Arsenal have been urged to sign Phil Foden this summer, with Pep Guardiola revamping his Manchester City squad. City spent big in the January transfer window on the likes of Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez and Abdukodir Khusanov, while Kevin De Bruyne has been released. Guardiola has also signed four new players already this summer, with Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri all joining City. Jack Grealish is among those expected to leave City, having been left out of their squad for the Club World Cup. ‌ However, City are struggling to find buyers for the 29-year-old, who is earning £300,000-a-week at the Etihad and it has been reported that they are now willing to send him out on loan and pay a percentage of his salary. ‌ The likes of Newcastle and Napoli have both been mooted as potential destinations for Grealish, but one club that have been told not to sign him are Arsenal. Former Premier League striker Tony Cascarino believes the Gunners should make a move for Foden instead. When asked if Grealish would be a good signing for Arsenal, Casarino told talkSPORT: "No, I think Foden's way more likely. Obviously Arteta worked at Man City with Phil Foden and for whatever reason, I'm sure we'll find out down the line, Phil Foden just hasn't been the player we know him to be this season. "From where he was the Football Writers' Player of the Year the season before, his performances this year have just not justified that. But all that's happening at City and all the spending that's gone on, I wouldn't be surprised if Foden is allowed to go somewhere. "Whether City let him go Arsenal, I don't know, but they let Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko go there. If Arsenal could get him, I think Arteta would really consider that, yeah. Foden is only 26, so he's still got a lot of football in him. "For whatever reason he's had a disappointing year, and I'm sure Arteta would know what's happened and gone on behind the scenes at City, absolutely. And I know some Arsenal fans will say, 'But he's had a poor year', but Phil Foden's a very gifted footballer. A terrific player. "He doesn't want to go into the next season being in and out of a team when there's a World Cup in the summer. Otherwise he won't play, no chance. And what have City spent in the last two windows? They must be close to £300million." ‌ Foden scored 27 goals and provided 13 assists in the 2023-24 campaign, but managed just 16 goal contributions the following season. And Foden revealed last month that he had been struggling throughout the campaign with personal issues and injuries. "It's been a frustrating season for me," said Foden. "I've had a lot of things going on off the pitch mentally. It's one of them, sometimes there's things in life that are bigger than football. This season I've struggled a little bit. "Hopefully come next year I can get my head mentally right and get back where I left off the season before, because I know what I'm capable of doing and the quality I have."

Thomas Frank on verge of first Tottenham transfer with club close to reaching £30million deal for forward

Tel, 20, spent the second half of last season on loan at Spurs under Ange Postecoglou. 4 4 The initial deal possessed a £45m option to buy. The French youth international played five times on Spurs' run to Europa League glory, including in both legs of the semi-finals. Tel, who turned 20 in April, arrived at Tottenham having already gained a wealth of experience in Germany. The highly-rated starlet played 83 times for Bayern Munich, scoring 16 goals. Having initially not been sure about a move to Spurs, Tel was convinced to make the switch by former boss Postecoglou. While the Aussie has since been axed, new manager Thomas Frank is said to also be keen on keeping Tel - with the promising forward to become the Dane's first Spurs signing. Among their list of targets is Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo. The Frenchman indicated earlier this month that he would like to join Manchester United.
