Ukrainian soprano competes at Llangollen Eisteddfod
Soprano Khrystyna Makar is among 25 competitors in the Pendine International Voice of the Future contest at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod this July.
Her life took a dramatic turn in 2022 when she and her sons, Denys and Lukian, had to leave their home city, Lviv, due to the war.
They left behind her husband, Volodimir and her parents.
Now settled in Shotton, Flintshire, Khrystyna is competing against singers from countries including the USA, China and South Africa, as well as England and Wales.
Before the 2022 invasion, Khrystyna was a successful classical singer, performing across Ukraine and Europe.

War-displaced singer hopes Pendine contest reignites classical career (Image: Supplied) Since arriving in the UK, she has lived in Llangrannog and Aberystwyth before finally settling in Shotton.
She has found it challenging to maintain her musical career and hopes the Llangollen competition will provide a much-needed boost.
Khrystyna continues to make trips home to Lviv to see her husband and family, but her recent visit coincided with a deadly Russian missile strike on a Kyiv apartment block.
Twelve people were killed and more than 80 injured in the attack.
Khrystyna said: "It's difficult but people still try to keep going.
"Being separated from your family is difficult but you have to be strong."
The competition is sponsored by the Pendine Arts and Community Trust and the winner will receive a £3,000 cheque and the Pendine Trophy, presented by opera star Sir Bryn Terfel.
They will also perform at the Eisteddfod's final concert on Sunday, July 13, alongside Sir Bryn.
Pendine Park proprietor, Mario Kreft MBE, said: "The standard of the competitors in years past has been absolutely phenomenal and I have no doubt it will be just as incredibly high again this year."
Llangollen Eisteddfod's artistic director, Dave Danford, said: "This is one of the most important competitions of the Eisteddfod and people come here because they could be watching someone who will become a household name."
Sir Bryn Terfel added: "The Pendine International Voice of the Future competition is a wonderful opportunity for talented young singers to make a mark."

Annette Bryn Parri, Musical Director of the North Wales Police Choir, was from the Deiniolen area. She died on May 27 aged 62. The esteemed Welsh Pianist, described as one of Wales' greatest musicians by Welsh singer, radio and television presenter Aled Jones, was well-known in Welsh culture circles and appeared regularly at the Eisteddfod in Llangollen. At the time of her passing, she was the Musical Director of the North Wales Police Choir. Chief Constable Amanda Blakeman said: 'It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of our friend Annette Bryn Parri. Annette was the musical director of our force choir. 'From day one put her heart and soul into developing and nurturing the choir. They said: "The choir are deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of Annette Parri who we've had the privilege to have shared the stage with on a number of occasions including the recent St David's Day concert in St Asaph Cathedral when she performed alongside Dylan Cernwy. "The renowned and distinguished pianist with such a remarkable talent would leave our audiences 'visibly joyful'. "Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time." Annette's musical journey began at an early age. She became an official accompanist at 15 and made her first appearance at the 1983 National Eisteddfod in Llangefni. In 1982, she won the Grace Williams Medal for composition at the Urdd Gobaith Cymru Eisteddfod at Pwllheli and the Blue Riband for instrumentalists at the 1985 National Eisteddfod at Rhyl. After graduating from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, Annette joined the staff of the music department of Bangor University as a piano tutor. Annette accompanied the choirs of Ysgol Glanaethwy performing arts school in Bangor for more than 30 years. She was musical director of the Anglesey-based Côr y Traeth for nearly a decade and established Trio, a male vocal trio. In 2024, she took on the role of musical director of the newly formed North Wales Police Choir.

Môn Mam Cymru to Welcome Extended Eisteddfod Genedlaethol yr Urdd in 2026
Llio Maddocks, Director of the Arts Urdd Gobaith Cymru, Rhun Ap Iorwerth MS for Ynys Môn, Cllr Gary Pritchard, Leader of Anglesey Council, & Sian Lewis, Urdd Gobaith Cymru Chief Executive. The Leader of Anglesey County Council, Councillor Gary Pritchard, has welcomed news that Eisteddfod Genedlaethol yr Urdd will be extended to seven days next year. Urdd Gobaith Cymru has said that it intends to extend the festival to seven days in 2026. This comes in response to an increase in the number of individuals that register to compete as well as the demand for more competitions. Llio Maddocks, Director of Arts at Urdd Gobaith Cymru said: 'The Eisteddfod yr Urdd is an ever-evolving festival, and we listen to our members. We've seen more registrations to compete than ever before and a demand for additional stage competitions, and we're so pleased to see the positive impact the festival is having by increasing opportunities to engage with the Welsh language outside the classroom. 'In response to this demand and to ensure we continue to be an inclusive organisation to each and every child and young person in Wales, we'll be expanding the Eisteddfod to a seven day festival.' Since 1929, Eisteddfod yr Urdd has provided opportunities for children and young people in Wales to showcase their talents, develop new skills and socialise with others from every part of Wales. Today, it's one of the biggest youth festivals in Europe, and Eisteddfod yr Urdd welcomes around 100,000 visitors every year. The festival was last held in Anglesey in 2004. Councillor Gary Pritchard said: 'Welcoming this unique festival – that will now last seven days when it comes to the site in Mona – will be a significant boost to the Welsh language, our young people and the economy. 'As a county council and Island, we are truly looking forward to welcoming Eisteddfod Genedlaethol yr Urdd in a year's time. There is nowhere better than Anglesey to stage this Welsh event for the young people of Wales, and following today's announcement, we will have a full week of competing. 'I'd like to thank Urdd Ynys Môn's Executive Committee and all volunteers for working tirelessly to ensure that Anglesey will, once again, be an exemplary home for this special festival in 2026.' He added: 'I look forward to seeing children, young people and families from all across the country visiting Anglesey.' The competing will begin on the Saturday before Whitsun and will last until the Friday of that week, with Gŵyl Triban moving to the first weekend, and the broadcasting partnership will continue with S4C. The Chair of Urdd Ynys Môn's Executive Committee, Manon Wyn Williams, said: 'The increase in the annual number of individuals competing in the Eisteddfod yr Urdd is extremely encouraging, and means that more children and young people take advantage of valuable opportunities through the association'. 'This is all thanks to tireless efforts of the Urdd's coaches, teachers, volunteers, and hard-working staff across Wales. As a result, extending the Eisteddfod to seven days is an exciting and important development. It's a privilege that we on Anglesey are welcoming this experimental Eisteddfod, and it's an opportunity to look at the festival's structure with a fresh pair of eyes, working with children and young people in Wales as we do this. We are all extremely excited to welcome everyone to the Island in a year's time.' Anglesey County Council's Chief Executive, Dylan J Williams, added: 'There is significant local enthusiasm, and people are eager to welcome this unique youth festival to the Island. It's a great opportunity for us to show Anglesey at its best. We will continue to work with the Urdd and local committee, with the aim of welcoming the Eisteddfod, and people from across Wales, here in 2026.' Eisteddfod Genedlaethol yr Urdd will be held during the last week of May, as usual, corresponding with the half term school holiday. The festival is held either in the South or the North of Wales, alternating each year.
