Brands' appetite wanes for creative risk-taking, per Lions research

Only 13% of brand marketers and creatives view their companies as 'risk-friendly' when it comes to creativity, while 29% are highly risk averse, according to the 2025 State of Creativity report from Lions, which produces the annual Cannes Lions creativity festival.
The report, now in its fifth year, surveys more than 1,000 marketers and creatives around the world and includes qualitative information from one-on-one industry leaders. More than half of respondents (51%) said their customer insights are too weak to develop bold creative, and 57% said they struggle to react quickly to cultural moments.
The survey also revealed that brands are increasingly focusing on short-term marketing activities, rather than long-term brand building. In the 2025 survey, nearly two-thirds (63%) of respondents said their brands were focusing on such tactics, up from 53% in 2023.
Dive Insight:
Brand and agency executives are becoming more risk-averse when it comes to marketing creative, which could negatively impact growth, according to the largest creativity festival. Outside data cited in the report backs up the assertion that stronger creativity leads to better business results. Brands that take creative risks generate four times higher profit margins than those that don't, per WARC and Kantar. Additionally, brands with an appetite for creative risk are 33% more likely to see long-term revenue growth, according to Deloitte.
The aversion to 'creative risk-taking,' defined by the survey as 'bold, unconventional ideas that challenge norms and engage audiences in unexpected ways,' boils down to issues marketers face like poor insights and an inability to respond to cultural moments quickly, per the report.
With regard to insights, 51% of respondents said their ability to develop high-quality insights was poor or very poor. Conversely, only 13% said their ability was very good or excellent. The main barriers to developing quality insights were a lack of understanding and clarity as to what makes a good insight, not enough priority on insight development and insufficient time allocated to insight exploration.
The report noted that strong agency-brand relationships and more diverse teams and methods yielded better, more actionable insights. Additionally, AI use also increased efficiency and reduced bias.
A lack of confidence in consumer insights is also leading to brands' inability to respond to cultural moments. According to the report, 57% of brands struggle to react quickly when something happens, and only 12% rate their ability to do so as 'excellent.' Other challenges include too many layers in the approval process and limited resources and investment. Recommendations include streamlining internal processes and shaping culture rather than chasing it.

Newell Brands and Adobe are partnering to activate generative artificial intelligence (AI) with Adobe Firefly and Adobe Express, Marketing Dive can exclusively share. The consumer goods marketer is also expanding its use of Adobe's content supply chain solutions to optimize planning, content creation, activation and measurement. The partnership comes as Newell looks to continue a business transformation strategy under new CMO Nick Hammitt. Previous CMO Melanie Huet was recently promoted to co-CEO of the company's home and commercial segment. Newell Brands, a consumer good company that notched $1.6 billion in net sales in Q1 2025, is investing in marketing across channels, including social media and e-commerce, with the goal of creating five times more content while improving efficiency and effectiveness. As part of this strategy, the company has a new partnership with Adobe around its generative AI services. The partnership with Adobe is multifold. Newell's content supply chain is now powered by Adobe's generative AI solutions, including its suite of Adobe Firefly Services, that enable content creation at scale through streamlining tasks like resizing and swapping backgrounds. Newell will also use Adobe Firefly Custom Models that are trained on the marketer's proprietary assets and ensure that content creation is on-brand. Using the models for its Paper Mate brand accelerated content production by 75% and shortened time-to-market — efficiencies the marketer hopes to replicate across its portfolio. Newell has also seen early success with Adobe Express, which allows it to define templates and brand guidelines for marketing teams. Its team in Latin America used Express on the production process for Oster social content to cut the time it takes to create 52 assets by 33%, from 12 hours down to eight hours. News of the partnership comes days after Newell shuffled its executive ranks, promoting its CMO to a co-CEO role and its vice president of marketing to CMO. New CMO Hammitt will be responsible for developing and executing marketing strategies to drive brand growth, increase market share and enhance consumer engagement and conversion. The executive previously held senior roles at The Campbell's Company, PepsiCo and Unilever. 'As CMO, I look forward to working with our brand teams to deliver bold, insight-driven marketing and commercial innovation that deepens consumer engagement, drives conversion, and fuels long-term brand equity,' Hammitt said in a press release. Newell joins a list of other marketers betting on generative AI to boost content marketing, including others who are leveraging Adobe's AI services this year. Brands under the Newell umbrella include Coleman, Oster, Yankee Candle, Rubbermaid and more. In Q1 2025, Newell Brands saw net sales decline 5.3% year-over-year to $1.6 billion, with core sales declining only 2.1%. However, President and CEO Chris Peterson noted that the results were in-line or better than the company's expectations, later saying that the executive moves were part of its strategy to connect with consumers and accelerate performance of its portfolio. Eastern Market has always been a showcase for entrepreneurs - standing the test of time
The Brief Detroit's Eastern Market started in the 1800s and is as relevant to the metro area as ever. In addition to produce and food, it has provided a platform for entrepreneurs and vendors. Vendors are always welcome and the application process can be done online from mid-February to May 1st. DETROIT (FOX 2) - Best known for flower days, farmer's markets and Lions tailgates, Detroit's Eastern Market has a rich history dating back to the 1800s. If you've been there before, you likely think of the sheds - a hub for vendors to set up shop looking for fresh and local goods. The backstory "On a busy Saturday during the summer months, you will see several hundred businesses or vendors in the sheds," said Katy Trudeau. The market itself has always been a way to get fresh food to an area that is often underserved - and while much has changed in the past century, some things remain. "One of the things that all types of entrepreneurs are attracted to at Eastern Market, is that entrepreneurial spirit that started over 100 years ago," she said. That same spirit drew business owner Bethany Shorb to open Well Done Goods. "It started here just as a workshop," Shorb said. "We do all of our screen printing in-house too." Now, 20 years later, the workshop evolved to a brick and mortar location. "We just continued to grow as demand arose," she said. It's a similar story for the owner of Shops on Top, Deron Washington, he jumped at the chance to be a part of the rich history. "I used to come to Eastern Market as a kid and I'm like wow, now I've got a business here in Eastern Market," said Deron Washington. "What a blessing." Both Washington and Shorb have learned, it's easy to get customers when the sheds are open - the trick is giving people a reason to come back when they are closed. "I definitely lean into the customer service, but I do have some nice merchandise too," Washington said. "We (asked) what can we come up with in terms of our brand and we say, 'Y not Detroit'?" Whether it is building a brand, or being able to pivot to meet a need, success at Eastern Market is about carving your own path. "We constantly adapted. During Covid we made wild screen-printed ties and T-shirts and no one was wearing ties when they're in front of their Zoom computer, they are wearing sweatpants, so we started making masks." As for the bread and butter at Eastern Market, you can find it, and so much more, at one of the many sheds which are transformed during the weekends and summertime. "We brought back our Tuesday Summer Market and kicked off the Sunday Summer Markets on Sunday," Trudeau said. Market Days are a staple and something customers have come to rely on. "It's a really important commercial district to Detroit and the region's economy, but we also have to be attracting more residents in and around the area," she said. Right now Eastern Market has plans to grow right alongside the neighborhood starting construction on Shed 7 this summer.
